    1. [LA-LGHS-L] RE: A Shooting in Vermilion Parish
    2. Richard Morgan Sr.
    3. For a number of years I have trying to tie in my MORGAN line with the name Thomas Theall. Well, I found a tie in - with an unexpected association I an might add. My MORGAN line: My Father, Edward Fenwick MORGAN, Senior, b 1869; son of : John Campster MORGAN. b 1832; son of: Archibald MORGAN II, b 1810 and Anne MORGAN, b 1816 (first cousins). Anne MORGAN was the daughter of: Soloman MORGAN I, b 1770. Archibald MORGAN II was the son of Archibald MORGAN I, b 1774. Archibald MORGAN I and Soloman MORGAN were brothers, sons of John MORGAN (of North Carolina), b 1752. The family originated in Virgina; some migrated to North Carolina and returned to Virginia; then migrated to the Louisiana Territories, around Ste Genevieve County Missiouri; and then down to Southwest Louisiana and East Texas. I have a brother whose name is Thomas (Tom) THEALL MORGAN. My Father, now deceased, told me: My brother Tom was named for Thomas THEALL a MORGAN family friend. (Being named after a family friend is not unusual in my family, I have another named brother and an Aunt named "Willie Winston, after friends of the family.) Thomas THEALL, according to my Father go into trouble because he blew up (destroyed) a dam that rice farmers had built across a body of water. I am not sure of the body of water. According to my Father, the cattle ranchers and others were pretty upset by the dam. Again, according to my Father, Thomas THEALL was put on a sail boat and sent to Panama. I have tried for many years to contact "Thealls" without any success. Not the end of the story! I visited an old plantation home near a bayou or river a number of years ago that had just opened for visitors. It was near Lafayette, I think. The person conducting the tour of the home told about how the original family were wealthy but lost it as a result of the dam need for their rice was destroyed by cattle ranchers. Getting up off of the floor, I told her my story that my Father had told me. She indicated: "Probably True". She did not have a name for the "dam destroyers". I am very interested in hearing/learning more about: (1) the dam destroyers (2) Thomas THEALL. I was born in Gibson, Terrebonne, Louisiana; lived in New Orleans for a year, and then joined the Army remaining with them until 1968, retiring here in Springfield, Fairfax, Virginia.

    3. Hi I have Shaw cousins in SE Texas who are also Morgan descendants, not sure if it's the same ones, but they were in LA before TX... And then there's the Brians, a family that would take years to sort out. Some Shaw cousins have O'Brians from LA, who came from NC or SC and some were near the Cumberland Gap. Originally they arrived from Ireland in VA and moved south and west, at least one was on the run for theft crimes committed in Ireland. Seems to have been several brothers, and sometimes they changed the spelling of their names from O'Brian, O'Bryan, Bryant, Brian, Bryan, for whatever reason at the time. Wondering if they're all part of the same group. This was in the 1700's and they were in the Felicianas, and other LA locations by and before the 1820's. They seemed to be close friends of my Shaw family, descendants of William Shaw who also was said to be from NC (or SC, depending on which record you find). I see their names as witnesses on marriage records, etc. Seems like all this should tie together somehow. 1. [LA-LGHS-L] A shooting in Vermilion Parish
    2. The following article was taken from the July 5, 1871, issue of the Planters' Banner which took the article from an earlier issue of the Meridional. Sheriff G.B. Shaw was a very effective sheriff who helped to return the Parish to a law-abiding land. He was a crack shot with a shotgun and won several awards at shooting matches around the United States. Sheriff Shaw and his friend, State Representative Paulin Fontelieu, had a duel with pistols in 1874 on the outskirts of Abbeville. Fontelieu was fatally wounded and died not long afterwards. In the 1880s, Shaw, himself, became a State Representative. I have no info on Thomas Theall. "Sheriff Shaw shot Thomas Theall, Thursday night, while attempting to arrest him at the residence of Mr. Solomon Morgan. The ball took effect in the man's side, and may prove fatal. This Theall was arrested some time ago for stealing--gave bonds, and like a model scamp, ran off. We are sorry he got hurt, but it is gratifying to see that our sheriff has the nerve to shoot straight when a culprit attempts to escape justice."

    3. This would be Granville Shaw (middle name probably Berwick), born at Nunez Island LA about 1850 and died 1909. He was the son of John Merriman Shaw b. 1829 d. 1865, and ?. John Merriman Shaw was the son of John C. Shaw and Margaret Rebecca Merriman. John C. Shaw was supposedly born in NC and his wife was born in St. Martins Parish, LA in 1807. She was the daughter of John I. Merriman and Mary Angelica Berwick. Thanks for printing it up. :-) Jan Garland AKDana@aol.com wrote: > > The following article was taken from the July 5, 1871, issue of thePlanters' Banner which took the article from an earlier issue of the > Meridional. 1. [LA-LGHS-L] Spanish-American War
    2. Letters from the Spanish-American War Most of the following dozen letters were written by some of our own Vermilion Parish men who experienced the adventures of being on foreign soil during and after some of the armed conflicts of the Spanish-American War. They speak to us from a distant past, but one familiar to many of us, thanks to the history books. These letters reflect the educational levels and attitudes of the men who wrote them, and they give us some idea of what our local soldiers experienced both in Cuba and in the Philippines. We will let the history books tell us about the war, its beginnings and the end results. Here, we will focus on the feelings of some our area men. Before presenting these letters, it would be appropriate to learn something about those who sent them, even though I have only a limited amount of information about them. Thanks to an article written in 1899, several of our local Spanish-American soldiers are named, giving me a place to begin my research. On June 17, 1899, the following article appeared in the Meridional. I’ll quote “The Boys Are Coming” directly. “The New Orleans Picayune says that the Second Regiment, United States Volunteers (Hood’s Immunes) have sailed from Cuba and reached Camp Mead near New York City, on the 29th of May. There the entire Regiment will be kept in quarantine at Camp Mead until Tuesday, the 20th of June, when the Command will be mustered out. The Regiment sailed from New Orleans on the 28th of July, 1899 [should read 1898] and reached Santiago de Cuba on the 4th of August. The boys have been in Cuba about ten months, and although they arrived too late for battles with the Spaniards, done splendid service as guards, and by having to stay in that climate have taken as many risks from disease as they would have had they participated in the Santiago campaign. [One of the diseases that they faced was Yellow Fever. It took the lives of many soldiers stationed in Cuba. It was at this time that it was discovered that a certain mosquito transmitted the disease. This discovery led to the control and virtual eradication of the dreaded disease]. Vermilion parish has furnished 3 soldier boys to this Command. Capt. Mike Pickard of Co K, orderly sergeant F. M. Leguenec, and Fred Dupuy who is a private in Capt Broussard’s company. The people will be glad to greet these defenders of their country’s flag and they may expect a royal welcome when they reach home.” I know nothing about Fred Dupuy--no relation to me--except that he was possibly the son of P. D. Dupuy, who had a residence and operated a store on Catholic church grounds for many years. Today, the site of that store and residence would be in front of the St. Mary Magdalen rectory. Captain Mike Pickard had left our area and had traveled to New Orleans to enlist--probably the first man from Vermilion Parish--in April 1898, shortly after war was declared. Almost immediately, he was honored with the appointment of First Lieutenant. As you can see from the above article, Pickard made the rank of Captain sometime before June 1899. One article that was quoted in the Meridional from the Crowley Signal, said that he had seen some “hot action,” whereas the article quoted above said that he hadn’t. I don’t know which account is correct. Somehow, Lieut. Pickard must have distinguished himself, since he did make the rank of Captain. In June 1899, almost as soon as he returned to Abbeville, Pickard was elected Master of Ceremonies by Abbeville’s Masonic Lodge. Sometime in August 1899, Capt. Pickard had visited someone in Jennings, having traveled from Washington, D.C. He worked in Abbeville for awhile; he was even drilling water wells in Abbeville. However, he sold his drilling outfit in late 1900 and was soon living in Jennings. As far as I candetermine, he never returned to Abbeville. Thanks to the Meridional, one of his descendants, and his tombstone, we are able to know a bit more about Francois M. Leguenec than we do about some of our other soldiers in the Spanish-American War. Leguenec was born on July 8, 1876, the son of Henri Leguenec and Emile Bernard. Henri immigrated from Breton, France. Francois enlisted about the same time as did Pickard: sometime in April or May 1898. He was discharged from Fort Meade in late June 1899. Leguenec was a Sergeant of Co K, 2nd Regt. of the U. S. Volunteers Infantry. He served as Abbeville’s mayor in 1920 and 1921. Francois Leguenec died on November 12, 1955, and he is buried in Graceland Cemetery, in Abbeville. Charles A. Lampman, unlike these first three soldiers, saw duty in California and the Philippines. He was born about 1870, the eldest son of M. V. Lampman, Sr. By June 1898, Lampman had been stationed at or near San Francisco. By July 30, 1898, he was listed as a sergeant in Battery B, Third U. S. Artillery, and was serving in Manila. As far as I could determine, Lampman was discharged in the Philippines where he remained until he set sail for San Francisco. He saw some military action, according to his own account, which you will be able to read about in one of his letters. Charles died on October 28, 1903, aboard an army transport bound from Manila to San Francisco. Apparently, while in the Philippines, he had contracted some disease that proved fatal on his trip back to America. The next individual, Rene L. Boudreaux, also served in the Philippines. In May 1898, Rene, a “young and intelligent Vermilion boy,” according to the Meridional, had gone to New Orleans “to enter the military service.” Just where, in our parish, Rene resided, I’m uncertain. For awhile, prior to his enlistment, he had been employed in A. J. Godard’s drugstore on Concord Street. In 1897, Rene was listed as a druggist, according to the Maurice News. So, for awhile, Boudreaux may have been living in Maurice. Once he enlisted, Boudreaux never returned to Abbeville. By January 1899, he was in Manila, where, according to his obituary, he served as a pharmacist for 4 years in the Army and was then sent to Chicago. His letter, which is printed below, expresses his frustration over being unable to engage the enemy on the front lines. Rene Boudreaux died at his residence in Chicago, on May 31, 1915, at the age of 38. He was survived by his wife, nee Marguerite Giblin, two sons, and two daughters. In one of his letters, Boudreaux indicated that he knew that Lampman was also stationed in the Philippines, and he wondered where. Did these two Vermilion Parish men ever meet, way off in that foreign land? Well, that’s all you get to read at this time. The names of the others from Vermilion Parish who served during the Spanish-American War, and those letters will appear in volume II of History of Vermilion Parish. This book is slow in coming, but it should be completed in the next few months. Ken Dupuy

    2. Prisoners thanked for working on cemetery at state hospital By JAMES MINTON Baker-Zachary bureau Advocate staff photo by John H. Williams Bishop Alfred Hughes of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge blesses with holy water Friday the graves of 4,000 or more forgotten mental patients. JACKSON -- The Roman Catholic bishop of Baton Rouge and two advocates for the mentally ill thanked a group of state prisoners Friday for restoring a bit of dignity to the final resting place of 4,000 or more forgotten mental patients. Bishop Alfred Hughes blessed the graves in Rugged Cross Sanctuary, a potter's field for patients who died at East Louisiana State Hospital without families to claim their bodies for burial elsewhere. Row after row of unmarked graves occupy a large hillside in the rear of the mental hospital's grounds. Burials began on the site in 1916, hospital officials said earlier this month. Prisoners at nearby Dixon Correctional Institute began caring for the cemetery this year, and members of the prison's Veterans Incarcerated organization raised enough money for 500 wooden crosses that were placed on a group of graves at the entrance to the cemetery. "It'll take us awhile, but we'll eventually mark each one," Warden James LeBlanc said. The Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge's Prison Ministry provided a carnation for each marked grave for the special occasion. Hughes, who included the cemetery in part of his annual visit to DCI, personally thanked each member of the veterans group as they stood at attention in a military-type formation. "You know that most of these people were forgotten in the world," Hughes said in praising the inmates for taking an interest in the cemetery. "You have touched me. You have been the hands of (the Virgin) Mary. ... I am so touched by what you have done; it will remain with me all of my life," added Yvonne Guerrini of Lake Charles, past state president of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. "Thank you so much for being so caring and keep up the good work," added Clarice Raichel of the alliance's Southwest Louisiana chapter. Guerrini and Raichel placed a wreath at the base of a large cross at the cemetery's entrance. The two traveled to Jackson for Friday's ceremony after reading a newspaper article on the cemetery Saturday. "I thought I can't believe this, because it's so symbolic of what's happening to the mentally ill in this country today," Guerrini said. She said a large percentage of the people who are diagnosed with schizophrenia are either homeless or incarcerated today. "God only knows where they'll be buried," she said. LeBlanc said the cemetery was somewhat overgrown when he first came across it several years ago, but DCI trusties gradually cleared away the underbrush that was encroaching on the graves in some spots. They also are mowing the site on a regular basis. "They've done an excellent job," said Mark Anders, acting associate director of the hospital. Jackson sculptor E. Paul Smith also contributed to the restoration project, adding arms to a statue of the Virgin Mary that once stood in front of a Catholic chapel on the hospital grounds.

    1. [LA-LGHS-L] More mounds
    2. Gary, do the mounds mentioned below seem similar to the ones on Pecan Island? The explanation of the formation of the mounds on Grand Lake is probably inaccurate. While not in Vermilion Parish, perhaps you can compare these mounds to the mounds in our parish, or at least note their existence. The quoted paragraph is taken from page 427 of the Louisiana A Guide to the State of Louisiana. This book was compiled by the "Workers of the Writers' Program of the Work Projects Administration in the State of Louisiana," and was printed first in 1941. "Twelve miles long and eight miles wide, Grand Lake is the largest lake in the Atchafalaya Basin. At intervals along its shell-lined shore are cone-shaped shell mounds, each with a large oak growing from the crest. These kitchen middens, the refuse heaps of ancient Chitimacha feast, were built up through the years as the aborigines discarded food shells and bones." I wonder if these mounds still exist.
