    3. Ray, I read it from a copy of the original and "Wartel" was my best read. Someone else through the years may have transcribed it differently, but I have no way of knowing what that may have been. As for Louisiana state records/census, I have so little experience with Louisiana records, I couldn't venture a guess. 3. Linda, You're right about this BURTON and Theresa - right place at right time. Can you verify the given name "Wartel." That's an odd one. If census taker took it down wrong, can't imagine what it should have been. Also, his being listed as a planter worth $45,000/100,000 would likely mean he had a plantation, as I understand my ancestor did. That does seem like a lot of money for those days. I plan to go through Burton research posted on line on message boards and my notes to see if I can find a likely BURTON born in Ky. Also, do you know if there is an 1865 La. state or N.O. census, and if so, if it would be hard to find the school/Convent on St. Peter's St.? 3. Yes, I believe the predecessor to the Academy of the Sacred Heart opened on St. Peter's around 1861/2. Moved to present location in 1888. I have written to them and I'm hoping for a response. It would be great if they had archives on earliest students. There's a chance she was at the Sacred Heart Academy in Grand Coteau before that. If she were, would the individual students show up on the 1860 census? Would the school be listed in the census index under it's name, or under name of headmistress? And was there a state census of New Orleans in 1865 that might show a student at the New Orleans school? - Ray ----- Original Message ----- From: NPizzolatt@aol.com To: sunray@erie.net ; LA-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, May 13, 2002 10:30 AM Subject: Re: Fw: [LA-CEN] 1860CEN. -Sacred Heart School student There was/is a Sacred Heart School in New Orleans and I believe it was/is on St. Peter. 2. Ethel S.
    3. Thank you, thank you! the Bushnell info is very helpful. I appreciate all that work. These are my ancestors. I would like to find more on Mathew Bushnell and Roseanna Charbonneau, like where they lived in Rapids (or ?), and what happened to her. I note that he remarried to Hyacinthe Aucoin, and wonder if Roseanna died. Mathew and Roseanna were my gr. gr. grandparents. Their daughter, Lucretia Bushnell, married Thomas Jefferson Gordon. They were my gr. grandparents. I am trying to pinpoint where and when these people lived prior to 1870. Later TJ Gordon and Lucretia moved to Calcasieu Parish(1870 census), but all records must have burned in the fire of 1910 in Lake Charles. I find nothing on Thomas J. Gordon before 1870. All help is appreciated. Thanks, Ethel.

    1. [LA-CEN] Lou or James Blackshear, 1870 census, unknown county
    2. Stephens-Avery Family
    3. Hello Friends, I am searching for a Louvenia or James Blackshear in the 1870 census; they would be about 10 years old, give or take a few years. There may also be another brother listed with the initial "B." I do not know the parents' names. I am unsure if there is an index to this particular census so if someone would let me know, I would be most appreciative. Otherwise, this search may be the proverbial needle! :-) Thanks for your help and suggestions, Jo-Ann Stephens Bahai@netusa1.net

    3. Ray, I am not sure about 1860, but later academies/orphanages/etc. listed its students/inmates individually, which makes me think that Theresa should have been indexed. Then again, perhaps then only the headmaster was indexed, and I don't have a clue about how to go about finding out who that may have been in 1860. At any rate, these Burtons are in the right place, right time: 1860 St. Landry Parish, Louisiana - Grand Coteau - October 12, 1860 - page 956 1658 - Wartel Burton, age 53; planter; $45,000/100,000; born Kentucky Therisia, age 49; born Mississippi Much luck in your search, Linda in Georgia Census/Cemetery Lookup Volunteer Genealogy is my ONLY business. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ray Horton" <sunray@erie.net> To: <LA-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, May 11, 2002 9:45 PM Subject: Fw: [LA-CEN] 1860CEN. -Sacred Heart School student > Linda, > > You may have stumbled on something for me. As I wrote below, It's possible the Theresa BURTON you found in St. Landry's Parish, may have been her mother, Marie Theresa Duvernois BURTON. Do you have access to the actual 1860 census for a look-up of this, or can you give me the info from the index so someone can check for me. Thanks, Ray >

    3. Linda, You may have stumbled on something for me. As I wrote below, It's possible the Theresa BURTON you found in St. Landry's Parish, may have been her mother, Marie Theresa Duvernois BURTON. The Theresa BURTON indexed in the 1860 La. census, St. Landry Parish, age 49, could very well have been her mother, Marie Theresa Duvernois BURTON. No problem born in Miss., since I have no idea where her mother was born. She very well may have been widowed by 1860. I believe she died of yellow fever shortly thereafter. It's possible that the Sacred Heart Academy in New Orleans hadn't opened just yet by 1860. Seems more than a coincidence that there is a Theresa BURTON and a Sacred Heart Academy in St. Landry Parish. Do you have access to the 1860 census and not just the index? If so, would you be able to look up this Theresa BURTON for me and see if it says she was a widow, and if she had any children with her. If you don't have it, please let me know the reference, i.e. E.D, etc. for someone to look it up when I post a request. Also, would the census show the list of people living at the Sacred Heart School there, like a boarding student? Sorry I don't have more detail on the location of the Convent/School (I know it moved in 1886 to iots present location).
