    3. I was just reminded that the church gave 25 years, this is the lasts year of the salvation process. Because the letter from the pastor and the policy papers from St. Martin were not dated I assumed this was the fifth year. The owner will exercise the right to dismantle the flagged tombs when the owner's 25th year of advertising ends. Sorry about my confusion. Mary

    3. We have no information as to what will be done with that plot once it is empty. One explanation is the remains will be reburied on the site, a slab poured over, the space above sold! There is about 1/2 acre on the south side of the cemetery with no graves. Christophe Chevalier deL'Homme's tomb, our family's concern, has artistic value. It is the work of one of the most well known monument designers of the era. The artist designed at least another at St. Michael's, the Grevembergs. He was brought up from New Orleans where he had a studio and designed monuments in cemeteries there. Chevalier had no children. We have 2 other tombs in that cemetery, surnames well known in Louisiana. they are not flagged. Had we known of the problem, it would have been addressed years ago. St. Martin of Tours advertised. Few of us live in Acadania, or read the Teche News. Maybe Time or Newsweek should run a piece about the plight of historic cemeteries, Smithsonian could be interested. Mary

    3. Is the Bishop of the diocese aware of what is happening to one of his shepherd's flock? If not, he should be notified. If he is aware, why is he allowing this to happen? 3. I have ancestors from La. with the surnames DUVERNOIS and BURTON. John BURTON married Marie Theresa DUVERNOIS. Believe they settled in New Orleans. Children were Philip BURTON, who died in Civil War, and my G Grandmother Theresa Duvernois BURTON, Marie died when Theresa was 12, and Theresa then educated at Convent of the Sacred Heart, New Orleans, finishing her education for several years in France. Theresa married Eugene LEROY in 1869 in New Orleans. I'd be interested in finding any of these names in cemeteries in the New Orleans area. Thanks, Ray Ray Horton sunray@erie.net

I have no idea what "perpetual" care means, either! Where my Father is buried (Bellevue Memorial Gardens in Opelousas) all of the graves are in the ground, except for the Mausileum (sp). Each grave is marked with "slab markers" some quiet elegant, others plain, depending upon the financial status of the family. The grass is cut as needed...they use riding mowers or a tractor since there are no tombs to cut around. I understand that meaning of perpetual care. But, what does perpetual care mean in the older cemeteries where loved one are buried in tombs? We are witnessing the definition now! I did forward the e-mail of this morning with the petition to my "addressbook"...the more people we can get interested and involved the better! Shirley cajungal@bayou.com
