Hello, Found family in 1920 census on "State Road". Can someone tell me which road that is today? thanks.. Judy
Ms. Aguilar, Here is a portion of an article about Wolfe County that I wrote some years ago that contains a reference to the State Road that crossed the County: “The village of Hazel Green was strategically established at the edge of the fertile Red River valley in the early 1800’s on what was one of several pioneer roads into Kentucky from the Carolina’s and Virginia. The village quickly became a growing agricultural and commercial hub on what became known as the Kentucky State Road, a fast developing trade route, which stretched from the Virginia border near Pikeville to Mount Sterling in Montgomery County. The portion of the road that extended across what would become Wolfe County in 1860, basically followed the Red River. The road crossed into the County near Neola (now Helechawa) and extended along Wolfe County’s northeast border to exit the County near Valeria. The road, referred to in later years as the Old State Road, is named State Street within Hazel Green. The State Road was a heavily travelled thoroughfare providing the foundation for Hazel Green to become one of the most prosperous small towns on the Kentucky State Road.” However, to answer the question, I believe that Route 1010 west of Hazel Green and Route 191 east of Hazel Green essentially followed the old State Road. The earliest that I could remember, the old road through Hazel Green and west toward Valeria was far more likely to be called the Old State Road than the section east of town. Between 1860 and about 1890, there were more than a half dozen changes in Wolfe County’s borders. But, I have always heard that when the County was formed, the northeastern border was essentially the State Road.
