    3. I did get to speak with Manuel Spencer once. He realized that the information in his Spencer book has some inaccuracies. With my lines; I think it is accurate. But, after 16 years of researching Joseph and Mary Spencer of Lee County, VA, I can say this. There has been no documented evidence of his parents, or her maiden name. Apparently, there was another Joseph Spencer whose wife might have been Mary De Roachbroom. If anyone has ever seen anything that might shed light on who Joseph's parents were, I would love to see that. There has been a DNA research project for several years. What it is showing is that our Joseph was biologically connected to a Benjamin and William Spencer who were also in NC. This William was younger than our Joseph. I come from Joseph and Mary's sons; John and Moses. John married Joanna Pennington and they died in Perry County. Their son James married Farabe (who I believe to be an Indian woman) their son William married Nancy Caudill. After she died William married a woman a few years older than him and they went to MO; along with his father-in-law Sampson Caudill. William and Nancy's son James is buried at Pine Ridge in Wolfe County. He married Mary Polly Robbins, and their daughter was my great-grandmother Candus Spencer who married Alexander Drake. Their son was Thurman who married Ila Spencer (my granddaddy and grandma) and their daughter Dora was my mother. Moses Spencer married Elizabeth Deaton. Their son William T married a woman named Jemima. Their daughter Isabella married John Johnson (from NC) and their daughter Dora married Nathaniel Spencer, they had Ila who had my mother Dora. Those are my Spencer lines; but the puzzle is Nathaniel's father William (Williamson) Spencer who had his first two children by a woman we are not sure of yet, then he married Louisa Hanks (daughter of Fielding and Lydia Harper and therefore a 1st cousin of President Abraham Lincoln), then he married Catherine Wyatt and had 19 more children. Williamson now has one descendant who is at the DNA study. He must have been in the Joseph and Mary lines because he shows up with their other descendants in KY and MO, and then back to KY. This is where I think Catherine and Williamson are buried; when they put in Mill Creek Lake on the Natural Bridge Road, there was apparently an old Spencer homestead. People have told me that if you swim down to the bottom of the lake you can see the remains of the house. My mother's 1st cousins have told me that that is where they went to visit Williamson and Catherine.

    3. Jo, for Nathaniel, you might need to be looking for a "mother" Spencer instead of a father Spencer.  It was common for a child out of wedlock to carry the mothers family name.  Also another possible avenue: the child was raise under the married husband's name and then at some age - most likely at the death of the "father" when the child is told he was not the first born - he would switch to his natural father's name.    In Wolfe county, I have seen both. I have a some handwritten pages, packed away, from a very merticulous and older person that researched the VA Spencers for a long number of years - that do not connect the Joseph and Mary Spencer of Lee Co, VA with the Joseph Spencer/Mary De Roachbroom family.   (Which means that this Joseph may also be carrying the Mother's Family name.) I am through the John/Joanna Pennington (Is she from the Pennington's of Pennington Gap?) James/ Farabe  (claimed by the Combs family) William/Nancy Caudill (The Caudill family is well documented). William/Nancy Jane Johnson (sometimes found as  Dinky Jane Wright) and so forth for six more generations. Of note:  one of my uncles saw "the great Spencer Bible" a long time ago (1966-ish) and said it had tons and tons of information.  Where was it ... in Wolfe County KY was all he remembered.  Finding that historical document would most likely go a long way in answering questions. 3. Hi, Jo, I think that Manuel Spencer did a great job in his book. Our family published a Swango Book back in 2002. I did most of the keying on it. We used a 1976 small Swango Book, as well as an addendum to that book. We also sent letters for information, did research got lots of information from family members far and near. It's a good book, but I am sure it has mistakes. I also forgot to mention that I have a line that goes back to Aaron Spencer, but I found that when I got up to the Whismans and the Hobbs, the Moses and Aaron lines merged. Interesting. The Spencers, Whismans, and Hobbes did a lot of "merging" I grew up in Wolfe Co., KY and my paternal grandmother told me a great deal about our people. I have some things she wrote down for me in her beautiful Spencerian Script. She was the one who got me interested in genealogy.
