Wolfe County News - Sept. 1968 SON OF WOLFE NATIVES KILLED 3 DAYS AFTER ARRIVAL IN VIETNAM Sp/4 Albert Rose, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Rose, formerly of Wolfe County, was killed Sept. 17 - just three days after his arrival in Vietnam. The 21 years old soldier was slain during a counter-attack while returning from a combat mision. Albert Eugene Rose, the second South Lyon casualty, was assigned to the U.S. Army's 46th Infantry. He enlised in the Army on Aug. 10, 1967 after attending South Lyon High School. He underwent eight weeks of basic training at Fort Knox, Ky., and eight weeks of advanced training at Fort Ord, Calif., before being sent to Baumholder, Germany on Dec. 29, 1967. His parents last saw him on August, 24th, the last day of a 65-day leave. After a brief stay in California, Specialist Rose shipped out for Vietnam on Aug. 28th. On three different occasions during his 65 day leave, he motored to Wolfe County to visit relatives. He was guest of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Burton and family just before leaving for Vietnam. When they received the death message, they could hardly believe it, since they didn't think he could have reached Vietnam in such a short time. He was a member of the Church of Christ, and the oldest of six children. Besides his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. James (Patricia) Deaton of South Lyon, Mich., and Katherine, 13, at home; three brothers, Daniel, 16, Kenneth, 9, and Phillip, 7 all at home, paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Rose, Bethany, Ky., maternal grandfather, Morton Taulbee, South Lyon, formerly of Wolfe County. Close relatives from Wolfe County who attended his funeral at South Lyon Church of Christ were his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Rose of Bethany, aunts and uncles, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Rose and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Burton and family of Mary.
