Author: pencesam Surnames: Pence Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.wolfe/4352/mb.ashx Message Board Post: ANDREW PENCE settled in what today is Wolfe County, Kentucky, about 1823. The village of Pence, located about nine miles southeast of Campton, is named after him. It is said that Andrew came to Kentucky from Illinois and his ancestors came from Virginia or possibly North Carolina. The Illinois speculation, however, is unlikely, as there was little settlement there in the years prior to the time Andrew is known to be in Kentucky. Additionally, the census records consistently show him to have been born in Kentucky. The notion - found both in print and on line - that he was the son of Henry Pence (Jr.) of the "Hawksbill Pences" who settled on the creek of that name in what is today Page County, Virginia, is definitely not true. This Henry Pence moved to Champaign County, Ohio, about 1805 and died there in the 1830s leaving a will naming his children and there is no Andrew among them. I would love to hear from someone who knows the real identity of the parents of Andrew Pence (b.1798 KY-d.1878 Wolfe County, KY).
