Wolfe County News - Sept. 8, 1965 WOLFE NATIVE DIES AUG. 30 James P. Alexander, 73 year old resident of 1312 Tenth Street in Lawrenceville, Illinois died in Lawrenceville County Memorial Hospital about 12:50 Monday morning, Aug. 30. He had been in ill health for quite sometime. The funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with Dr. C.H. Todd and Rev. Gerald Gulley officiating. Burial was in Lawrenceville Cemetery. Born in Wolfe County, KY., October 24, 1891, he was the son of S.C. and Mary Alexander. He was married to Virginia Leslie May and came to Lawrenceville in 1913. (could be 1918) Survivors include the wife; two sons, James P. Alexander, Jr., of Springfield, Ill, and Wilfred Alexander of Lyon Haven, Fla., two brothers, J.E. Alexander of Lawenceville and William Alexander, of Lebanon, Ohio; seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Mr. Alexander was a well known businnessman and political figure in Lawrenceville and the surrounding area. He owned and operated a grocery and general merchandise store on the corner of Ninth and Carsy? Streets for 46 years. He was actively engaged in the politics of the Demorcratic party for many years and was elected mayor of Lawrenceville for three terms. He was also active in the affairs of the community having served as a member of the school board and was a past member of the Methodist Church board. Carole
