Wolfe County News - Oct. 10, 1986 John K. Hurst, son of John Nathan and Alberta Kelly Hurst, was born at Malaga, KY., March 5, 1918. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Wells, April 3, 1946 at Winchester, KY. They celebrated their 40th anniversary April 13 this year. He was the father of Kelly Wells Hurst, Holton, Indiana: Garret Lynn Hurst, Greensburg, and Carrie Birge, North Vernon and Paul Thomas Hurst, Danville, W.Va. He is also survived by seven grandchildren. Other survivors are two brothers and one sister; Foster and G.T. Hurst of Campton, Ky., and Elizabeth Lacy, West Liberty, KY. As a young boy about the age 12 he carried the U.S. Mail on horse and often spoke of events which occurred then. He served his country faithfully for three years in the Philippine Island Conflict with the 11th Airborne during World War II where he was wounded twice and for which he received the Purple Heart and other medals. After military service, he was self employed as a mechanic, thus providing well for his family. He was always willing to help those in need and will be missed by his many friends and neighbors.
