Norma Adams is going to post some of the early Hazel Green Heralds, and I'll try and finish here in Wolfe. There are a good many years missing. I needed the 1907, but as my luck runs, there was no 1907 nor 1906 nor 1908. I'm not even sure the other years are complete. I tired to look at the other films, and there is one film that says 1917 but I don't think all the years are there, up to 1917. Guess we just have to be thankful there are some of the papers. Over a 100 years is a long time to keep papers. There must have been other newspapers in this area, for I now find columns from the Campton Courier and the Jackson Hustler. Hazel Green Herald - Oct. 6, 1904 JIM EDWARDS SHOT AND KILLED On Saturday afternoon last just before sundown Jim Edwards was shot and killed on Rocky Branch by Daniel Raffert. Frank Puckett and Edwards went to the home of Raffert in his absence, each with a shot gun, and Puckett amused himself by firing at the furniture, one load from his gun tearing a hole in the head of a bedstead, by which a little girl was sitting. She ran from the house screaming and the women began to upbraid the men for their conduct when they left and went to Steve Tutt's near by. Mr. Tutt remonstrated with them for their conduct and warned them to stay away from Raffert or he would hurt them. They said they would and left, saying they were going to Laurel for whiskey. At Edwards' house Puckett shot a chicken, the former telling his wife to get them a good supper by the time they returned with the whiskey. Raffert meantime had got home and as they passed his house both were firing their guns in the direction of the house, and shot from one of their guns grazed the scalp of Raffert, who was inside his fence firing at them with a revolver. When he wiped his face and found blood Raffert secured his shotgun and fired at Edwards; one ball entering his right breast and another just below the left ear. The cartridge contained nine rifle balls. Raffert surrendered to the authorities and was arraigned for trial Monday, and came clear. ANOTHER KILLING IN MORGAN A man by the name of Vest shot and fatally wounded Custer Robinson on Tom's Branch, in Morgan county, Saturday afternoon last, under distressing circumstances, as appears from our information. It seems that Robinson, Heath Bartley and one or two others had engaged in a social spree and Vest passing by they invited him to indulge in a drink with them. He replied that he didn't want a drink he had quit. To this someone replied that he was a ____ __ ___ ___ __-. And Vest knocked him down and started off. Robinson followed and caught him by the back of the neck and made some remark about killing, which he accompanied by an oath, and Vest, without turning around, pulled his pistol and fired under his left arm. The ball struck Robinson in the left side ranging upward and inflicting a wound that was thought would be fatal. Vest went to West Liberty and surrendered to the authorities. Carole
