Stephen was the last living grandchild of Green Berry Salley and Mary Church of early Wolfe County, Kentucky . Green Berry and Mary moved their family from Lee County, Virginia to the Red River section of Morgan County in about 1860. Their son, Robert Salley, married Phoebe Caudill and eventually moved to Wise County, Virginia where Stephen Salley was born in 1924. Stephen was a much-decorated WW-II veteran having survived the climb up the Normandy Cliffs on D-Day. He was one of only a dozen infantrymen that survived from his Big Red unit. He was asked by France to return there several years ago to receive the French Medal of Valor. Although Stephen lived in Virginia and Tennessee all of his life, he returned to visit relatives in Wolfe and Breathitt Counties each year and gave a speech several years ago at the dedication of his grandfather's Civil War gravestone. At that time, Stephen was one of the relatively few living grandchildren of a Civil War veteran. Dr. Bill Rice Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
