Does anyone have anything on Claude Allen? He md. 1st-Mary Leona White. Don't know the name of his 2nd wife. Also, any pics of Parilee or Caroline Hollon? They are my g-aunts. At least, Parilee is. Caroline always was called aunt by my mom and uncle, as she lived with Parilee and Nathan until she died. She never married. Richard, You have pointed out something I had always assumed, but you are right, the dates of this A.J. Pence can't be the Andrew s/o Andrew and Rebecca. I had just assumed he was because of his grave location. There is an unmarked grave next to this A.J. Yes, he was Felix and Elizabeth's first child. So, back to "where's Andrew Jackson, s/o Andrew"? I don't know. What I sent was all of the cemetery records I have and a listing of all known stones. It is possible he is among the unmarked stones in the Andrew Jackson Cemetery. Another question now is which Andrew Jackson/A.J. is the cemetery named for? Take care, J. Larry Helton, Jr.
Correction!!! My fingers got too fast!! The second sentence was not finished. Dear Larry and All:\ I thought perhaps you and other Pence researchers might like to have this brief rundown on the Pences who were enumerated in the first census of Kentucky in 1810: Philip Pence Jefferson County He was born in York County, Pennsylvania, and moved to Maryland by 1790. Moved to Jefferson County in 1796. Had sons born in Jefferson County in 1797 and 1799. There names were John and Philip. In later generations, this family used the spelling BENCE (Philip's father was known as BENTZ. Emanuel Pence Lincoln, Lincoln County He was a first cousin to Henry Pence (Jr.). He sold his land in Shenandoah County (now Page County) in 1801 and moved to Lincoln County before the 1810 census. He died before the 1820 census. There is no firm list of his children. Adam Pence Scott He was an uncle of Henry Pence (Jr.) He likely was in Kentucky by 1800. Left a will in Scott County naming each of his children (no Andrew). The following three were his sons: Adam Pence Scott County Born in 1780, son of above Adam; went to Clay County, Missouri, with his entire family; left a will in Clay County. No Andrew among children. George Pence Scott County Born about 1765, son of first Adam above. Left a will in Scott County naming his children; no Andrew. John Pence Scott County Son of first Adam above. Went to Clay County, Missouri; left will naming children. No Andrew. Coonrod [Conrad] Pence, Shelby County Born in 1784; he was a single man in 1810 (married the next year in Shelby County); his father, John Pence, of Augusta/Rockingham County, Virginia, moved from Virginia to Shelby County to join his son about 1811. Details on these families can be found on my web site (all except Philip). Richard A. Larry, it's my firm conviction that in this case there is no "just in case." I also have spent some effort in trying to figure out who might be the parents of Andrew Pence of Wolfe County. I have been "collecting Pences" for almost 40 years now. For almost 30 I have been entering this Pence data into a home computer. For the last 20 I have been an active on-line genealogy participant. I have data on more than 20,000 Pences in several databases and files, including a master index with nearly 17,000 entries. Included in these files are summaries of most of the census records from 1850 on. And in all of that, not a clue to the parents of Andrew! Thank you so much for the cemetery records! I will be adding what is missing to my data. I would appreciate any Pence descendants on this list taking a look at what I have on the family of Andrew Pence at this page on my web site: www.pipeline.com/~richardpence/gensum4 Andrew is No. E1. I believe this to be the most accurate summary of the children of Andrew that I have seen, but there is always room for corrections and additions! Richard A. Like Larry has a theory that Andrew was a 'love child,' I have wondered if Andrew was maybe raised by John Holland and eventually became John's son-in-law. Dear Larry: I think we have been in touch before. You recently wrote in the Wolfe County Forum, which reached me through the Wolfe Mailing list because of the mention of the surname Pence: >>> These are my Pences: Judy Pence Helton > Samuel Odell Pence > Samuel Withrow Pence > Felix Pence > Andrew Pence. I am down at the Bethany Christina Mission Center and at Pence several times a year. We buried Grandpa there in 1994. I can probably tell you just about where everything is or was. No, Andrew didn't have a middle name. He was at one time a justice of the peace for Breathitt County during the feuds. I do have all of the Henry Pence info of the one from Champaign, just in case. Some have listed Andrew as a "love child" of Henry Pence. No one has come up with a better connection.<<< If you have all of the Henry Pence information from Champaign County, Ohio, then you know that Henry Pence (Jr.) left a will there and named his children in this will. Of course, there is no Andrew. Beyond that, all of the census data I have see verifies that Andrew was born in Kentucky. So far as I can tell, Henry Pence (Jr.) never se a single foot in Kentucky, nor did his first or second wives. He was in Shenandoah County (that part that is now Page County) until after 1800 and moved to Ohio by 1805. The idea that Andrew was the son of Henry Pence and Elizabeth Koontz arose in Randy Pence's book about the descendants of Andrew and Rebecca (Hollon) Pences. Randy had read, among other things, a 1960 booklet called _Pence Places Names and Early Pences in America_, written by Monroe Conger Pence. This booklet is not a genealogy per se, but Monroe did include some family information that others had sent him. In this book, Monroe also speculated on which Pence groups might be related. The juxtaposition of the family of Henry (Jr.) and his relatives and the family of Andrew Pence's family in this book was misinterpreted by Randy, who then wrote that Andrew was a son of Henry. I knew Monroe Pence well. I visited him in his home in California and he has been a guest in my home here in Virginia. In 1972, while I was visiting Monroe, he said he was about to retire and therefore he turned over all of his Pence correspondence to me. Believe me, there is nothing in this correspondence to show any relationship between the Virginia Pences and Andrew Pence. Further, Monroe told me he did no genealogical research, he just wrote people with the surname Pence in and around the towns in the U.S. that are named Pence. One of the letters came from a descendant of Andrew, who listed some of Andrew's descendants. I have exchanged emails with Randy Pence about this and he said he has reason to link Henry and Andrew other then what he had seen in Monroe's booklet. That booklet does not express anything other than the possibility - a guess only, as Monroe personally told me - that Andrew might be related to the group of Pences to which Henry (Jr.) belonged. Given the above conclusive facts, I hope you and other descendants of Andrew will join with me in combating the misinformation about Henry Pence and Andrew Pence. Thank you. Richard A. I have been to Wolfe County to Cemetary's on Pence branch and Rose Bend. I am returning soon to take pictures of Hollon Cemetary. Do you know where Andrew Jackson and Susan the son of Andrew are buried? I have several cemetary pictures from Wolfe and Rowan Counties and would love to have any pictures anyone would share from the Andrew Pence line. Holland seems to have been the original name. But you know how variations develop. Hollon is the accepted spelling in Kentucky especially. another variation is Hollan although not used very much now a days. Bess
Jill-- You are right, of course about John being the husband of Charity. I don't know how I did that when I knew very well it was John. Thanks so much for your correction. Bess
