I also am looking for Elams. My Father-in-law was Billie K Elam. His father was Dewey Elam who married Dema Mae Miller. She was from Lee City. Dewey had a sister Nancy and a brother Irvin and a brother Clinton. Dewey and Demi had 3 children, Billie K, Oliva and Vivian. Dewey worked the coal mines around Hazard and moved to Cincinnati when Billie was about 7. He passed of Black Lung. Demi remarried a few times. She finally passed in a nursing home in Indiana of Cancer. Her daughter Vivian lives in Indiana today. Billie K passed of cancer also. I've been trying to find more family members. I remember Bill talking about a cousin KC Elam but I never met him. I heard he was a big man. Bill told us when he was young and lived in Kentucky ( believe he was born on Lots Creek) He said they called his Father (Dewey) Long Heal. I'd love to share information. This is so interesting. My husband and I visit Wolfe County, Gorge area several times a year and just l! ove it. Do you know where Duane Mountain is down there? Somewhere close to Lots Creek? Andrew (Andy Elam) Bill's Grandfather supposedly owned some land there? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. The following is an email I sent some time ago. Can you elaborate on this. Winston Nickell From: [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) Sent: Thursday, October 31, 2002 12:17 AM To: [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) Subject: Re: [KYWOLFE-L] Christopher C. Cox Hi Carole, I read the message and it struck a nearve. When I was a youngster living on a farm at Millers Creek, KY, Estill County, and when I was working in the fields there, especially while hoeing tobacco or corn near the Millers Creek bridge, I would stop for a break and cross this bridge to take a drink from the well in front of the Ashland Pump Station there. The water was very cold and refreshing especially when you are hot, sweaty and very thirsty. The man who ran the pump station was Christopher Columbus Lump Cox and I have met and talked to him many times. He was such a nice man. But I thought it was funny at the time, for I never heard of a person having so many names! Ha! Thanks again, for all the work you are doing. Winston G. 2. Fellow genealogists and anyone concerned with preserving our sacred cemeteries, The History Channel and Time Warner are sponsoring a 'Save Our History' grant award for which anyone can go online and cast their vote. Voting ends THIS FRIDAY April 27th, so time is short. We were fortunate that our restoration project was chosen as a finalist. The JCOGS is the only genealogy society or cemetery project to be chosen as one of the five finalists, so I truly hope that you will go to the Time Warner website and cast your vote for the James Cemetery project. If awarded this grant, we will use 100% of the grant to begin installing an antique-style aluminum alloy fence around the perimeter in order to help halt further desecration of this sacred and historic burial ground. You can read more about our James Cemetery project at the Time Warner 'Save Our History' voting website. Please unite with us as a group of genealogists concerned about the ever-increasing destruction of our cemeteries by VOTING for us at the website below. And note also that ANYONE with Internet access can VOTE so please forward this email to your genealogy circle of friends and ask THEM to vote too! I was placed there myself in the early 1970's (along with 125 other children.) I knew most of them well. I'm fine now that I'm 50 years old, but not knowing my family (other than my brothers & sisters, also placed there) has left me looking on the internet for my "blood" relatives -- PERRY H BREWER family. My mother was originally at Bethany in 1941, where she was "adopted" by a minister & his wife. I'm told back in the day-1940 or so- many times a ride in the car meant you had new parents. My mother had a ride like that in 1941, I took a similar ride arranged by Bethany, in 1972. Not that long ago. I only pray they have changed their practices of hiding children from their rightful families, and keeping the facts secret. I have returned to Bethany 4 times to try to get info. I even tried to get a job there as a teacher to do research and try to protect..no avail. Good luck Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My mother was at Bethany Orpahnage in 1941. she was "adopted" from there by a Reverend & his wife. From my understanding "adoption" from this place meant that the "parents" would load the child into the auto & leave!! This is how my mom was adopted in 1941, and I was later "adopted" from the same place.(1972) I got lucky. My older step brother and his wife came for my sister & I. Lots of pain around this...Never have found my "blood" relations-THE PERRY HERMAN BREWER FAMILY-continue searching everyday. Bethany kept sketchy records if any.
