    1. [KYWOLFE] The Disposition of the 1905 Murder of Newton Taulbee
    2. Timothy J. Barron
    3. Subsequently, I did find a few articles in 1908 about George Banks being pardoned. It seems this "sister" would have been the sister or half sister of Newton's wife. The following appeared in the Daily Public Ledger newspaper from Maysville, Kentucky on September 1, 1908 on page 3: "Justice At Last. Man Who Killed Another in Protection of His Sister Pardoned By Governor Cox. Governor Cox Saturday pardoned George Banks of Wolfe county, who is serving a 21-year sentence for killing Newton Taulbee. It was made known to the Governor that Banks killed Taulbee because the latter seduced Banks' sister. All the prison officials recommended the pardon and no protest was filed. The cause of the killing was not even in the record at the Pen." The following appeared in The Hazel Green Herald newspaper from Hazel Green, Wolfe County Kentucky on September 3, 1908 on page 1: "George Banks, who some years ago was convicted in the Wolfe circuit court for the murder of Newt Taulbee, passed through town yesterday on his way home, having been released from confinement at Frankfort upon solicitation and petition of his friends. He was accompanied by his brother, Irvine, who had been to see Gov. Wilson in his behalf." The following appeared in the Owingsville Outlook newspaper from Owingsville, Kentucky on September 10, 1908 on page 3: "Pardon for George Banks. Campton, Ky. - Gov. Cox granted a pardon to George Banks, who was sentenced to 21 years in the penitentiary for killing Newton Taulbee, his half brother, in this county some years ago. Banks had only server about eighteen months of his sentence." Timothy J. Barron tim@timbarron.net http://timbarron.net

    1. [KYWOLFE] The 1905 Murder of Newton Taulbee
    2. Timothy J. Barron
    3. As part of my re-cataloging effort of Hollon descendants, I was working today on the family of Samuel Taulbee (born circa 1828) and Nancy Hollon (born circa 1833 and the daughter of George and Elizabeth Hollon). One of their children was Newton Hollon, and all indications are that he is the same Newton Hollon that was murdered near Lacy Creek in Wolfe County on July 26, 1905. There are other indications, which I am still trying to find proof for, that his wife and widow was Laura B. Carson, who is said to be the daughter of George W. Carson. These articles directly point to this, as G.W. Carson is mentioned. They refer to George Banks or Carson, as a half brother to Newton. It would appear that he actually would somehow be blood related and a half brother to Laura (and more of a half-brother-in-law to Newton). Here are transcriptions of four newspaper articles that I have found so far. I've not found anything yet on the disposition of George, such as a trial, etc. = The following appeared in The Citizen newspaper from Berea, Kentucky on July 27, 1905, on page 8: "A Robbery Charge. It Lead to the Killing of Newton Taulbee at Campton. Campton, Ky., July 26. A telephone message received at this place states that George Banks, or Carson, had shot and instantly killed Newton Taulbee, his half-brother, on Lacy Creek. Taulbee had indicted Banks and his sister in the circuit court of this county for robbery. The met in the county road, near Carson's house, and Banks opened fire. The ball penetrated Taulbee's head, killing him instantly. Banks or Carson is a son of G.W. Carson, ex-county judge of this county. Banks has not been arrested." The following appeared in The Paducah Sun newspaper from Paducah, Kentucky on July 27, 1905, on page 8: "Killed His Half Brother. Campton, Ky., July 27. George Carson, alias Banks, shot and killed Newton Taulbee, his half-brother, on Lacy Creek. The men had been enemies since Taulbee was instrumental in having Carson indicted in the circuit court for robbery. The men met in the road near Carson's house and drew their weapons. Taulbee fell, shot through the head." The following appeared in The Interior Journal newspaper from Stanford, Kentucky on July 28, 1905 on page 2: "Ill feeling of long standing between two Wolfe county half-brothers, George Banks and Newton Taulbee, resulted in Banks sending a bullet through Taulbee's brain, killing him instantly. The men met in the public road near the home of Banks, who at once opened fire." The following appeared in The Mt. Sterling Advocate newspaper from Mt. Sterling, Kentucky on August 2, 1905, on page 3: "Killed From Ambush. On Tuesday morning, July 26 at about seven o'clock in Wolfe county Newton Taulbee was shot from ambush by his half brother, George Banks, with a 38 Smith & Wesson revolver and instantly killed. Banks went to Campton and surrendered to the authorities. Taulbee was without weapons. There was bad feeling between the brothers over a blind tiger partnership business." Timothy J.
