Does anyone happen to know who may be in possession of the 1877 letter from Andrew Jackson Holland? While I have a photocopy of a photocopy, it might be nice to get a high-resolution scan from the original for the benefit of all Hollon/Holland researchers. I'm told that one of the last known possessor was a Nora Sebastian Mobsy from West Virginia, and told she is deceased. Timothy J. Very good, James. You mentioned that you are descended from David Bowen Rose--son of John and Rebecca. Which son of theirs--or daughter--do you descend from. As I mentioned, I am descended from their son, James N. Rose. I was always told that his middle name was Nelson, but I finally got a copy of his death certificate and it had James Nickell Rose. His mother's maiden name was Nickell. James had a son also named David Bowen Rose who married Mary Ann/Catherine Whisman. They are the parents of my grandfather, James Floyd Rose who married Laura Effie Wilson. Her mother was a Swango. My 1st cousin, Judy Spencer, married a David Graham. Those names keep coming on down, don't they? Bess . ----- Original Message ----- From: "James Maxwell" <james_m_maxwell@yahoo.com> To: <kywolfe@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 21, 2014 9:08 PM Subject: Re: [KYWOLFE] Spencer Hi Carter & Bess, Your ancestor must be Elizabeth Graham Rutherford. As to Elizabeth Graham Rutherford. The last record I have of her is a tax list from 1857/58 where she is listed as "Elizabeth Graham" with several children. Carter-- It's entirely possible. There were a lot of Roses back then. The original Rose, John, who came to what is now Wolfe Co. about 1801, was married to Rebecca Bowen Rose. They had a number of children, 7 boys and 2 girls. but I don't believe any of them were named James. He had a son, David Bowen Rose who married Sarah Nickell. They had a son, James Nickell, who is my g-g-grandfather. But none of his sons was named James.Wolfe Co. was formed in 1860--just in tim,e for the Civil War. And part of it was taken from Morgan Co . This would be the generation I think you are looking for. My James was born in 1831 and d. 1914. But I have mostly done my direct line, This James you sent was a rather prosperous fellow for those times. The Roses owned a lot of land, I have heard. David Bowen Rose, this James' father is supposed to have purchased a great deal of land from Henry Clay. It was called the Sugar Orchard farm. All that remains of it today is a Cemetery over on Stillwater in Wolfe Co. that is named the Sugar Orchard Cemetery. Do you know any of this James Rose's relatives? that would provide a clue. I wish I could help you more. I know how important it is to find ancestors. Bess My great grandmother's mother died when my great grandmother, Josephine Rutherford and her three sisters were young. Her father, Pierce Rutherford remarried and apparently the girls were placed in other households, probably to work. As near as I can figure it--going by Mannuel's book-- John Lee Spencer, son of Isabella dau. of Moses, married Mary Ann Hobbs dau. of Mary Spencer dau. of Aaron. On Ancestry There is one picture of a man sitting with bib oeveralls ad a woman standing next to him and some say it is AJ Hollon and Sarah Wright. I believe this to be AJ hollon (father is James Hollon) and Edith Banks plus they don't even look like the Hollons I mention. Does anybody have any ideals on this, would like to keep these things straight. thanks Charles
After some careful research and examination of all available source evidence, I've made a significant update to the children of John and Polly in my data tonight. This examination was influenced by a thoughtful question received from Bella Gulden. All previous sources and findings reflected them having fifteen children, which were initially enumerated in Clay Hollon's 1958 book "Hollon and Related Families" as follows: 1 - Betsey, 2 - George Washington, 3 - Nathan, 4 - Charity, 5 - Phillip, 6 - Lucinda, 7 - John D., 8 - Jackson, 9 - William, 10 - Fanny, 11 - Hannah, 12 - James Buchanan, 13 - Henry, 14 - Dock, 15 - Zerilda Jane. There are two pieces of evidence to draw a reasonable conclusion that they actually had sixteen children, with the new correction or addition being a son named Charley. First, the 1850 census lists a three year old male named "Charley" in the household. This individual was previously treated as another relative or a census mistake, as it is quite common to see errors in names and dates, based on who provided the information to the census taker, etc. Based on all verified or supposed dates of the other children, this Charley does not appear to be a nickname for one of them, nor a mistake based on all known birth years. Second, two recently identified newspapers articles from 1902, which are listed further below, indicate that Polly was "the mother of 16 children, 10 of whom are living." These newspaper articles directly points to the Charley from the 1850 census being the sixteenth child. The articles concern Polly being ill, so that information on her children would have been supplied by her husband John, or one of her children. The ten that would be living in the 1902 article would be: Elizabeth, George, John D., Lucinda, Andrew Jackson, William, Fannie, James, and Dock. As a SIMPLE summary, here is my revised listing of their children: 1 - Elizabeth (born 1837) 2 - George W. (born 1840) 3 - Nathan (born 1842) 4 - Charity (born 1843) 5 - Phillip or Philip (born about 1846) 6 - Charles or Charley (born about 1847) <-- NEW (only listed on 1850 census) 7 - John D. (born about 1848) 8 - Lucinda (born about 1850) 9 - Andrew J. (born 1851) 10 - William (born about 1854) 11 - Fannie Caroline (born 1855) 12 - Hannah (born about 1856) - still some discrepancy about her 13 - James B. (born 1857) 14 - Henry (born and died 1859) - still some discrepancy about his name, the records say "unnamed" 15 - Dock B. (born about 1860) - he also went by Henry 16 - Zerilda (born 1862) The six that would have been deceased in the 1902 article would be Nathan, Philip, Charley, Hannah, Henry/Unnamed, and Zarilda/Zerilda. 1902 NEWSPAPER ARTICLES ON POLLY HOLLON Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated January 18, 2014 The following article appeared in Hazel Green Herald newspaper from Hazel Green, Wolfe County, Kentucky, on July 31, 1902, on page 3: "Aunt Polly Hollon, wife of Uncle John Hollon, of Holly, is dangerously ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.A. Sewell. She is one of the oldest (if not the oldest) persons in that part of the county, and is the mother of 16 children, 10 of whom are living." The following article appeared in The Mt. Sterling Advocate newspaper from Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, on August 5, 1902, on page 3: "Aunt Polly Hollon, wife of Uncle John Hollon, of Holly, is dangerously ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.A. Sewell. Hi Bess, I have never met an Aaron Spencer descendant. I believe he stayed in VA, right? Which child do you come from? I am living in Stanton. Would love to meet you sometime and talk genealogy. I have a CD from a woman who wrote a Spencer book. There is so much information on it about the descendants of Joseph and Mary; including photographs. I will work on getting them posted to the Wolfe County Gen site. I traced the Elizabeth Deaton line. I have never been able to determine who her and Moses' son William T married; only that her name was Jemima. The other lines in Wolfe County I have worked on; Wyatt, Johnson, Robbins, Amburgy, Moore, Dunn, Brooks, Campbell, Drake.
Hi, Jo, I think that Manuel Spencer did a great job in his book. Our family published a Swango Book back in 2002. I did most of the keying on it. We used a 1976 small Swango Book, as well as an addendum to that book. We also sent letters for information, did research got lots of information from family members far and near. It's a good book, but I am sure it has mistakes. I also forgot to mention that I have a line that goes back to Aaron Spencer, but I found that when I got up to the Whismans and the Hobbs, the Moses and Aaron lines merged. Interesting. The Spencers, Whismans, and Hobbes did a lot of "merging" I grew up in Wolfe Co., KY and my paternal grandmother told me a great deal about our people. I have some things she wrote down for me in her beautiful Spencerian Script. She was the one who got me interested in genealogy. Philip or Phillip Hollon is a son of John Hollon, Jr. and Elizabeth Mary "Polly" Gibbs. All previous sources, such as Clay Hollon's book from 1958, simply indicate that he "died young." He is listed on both two census records with his parents: 1850 at age 4, and 1860 at age 15. Given the timeframe, and that his older brother, George Washington Hollon, served with the Union during the Civil War, that is an angle that I am exploring. There is a Phillip Holland that list listed with the Ohio infantry. There are no enlistment papers on Ancestry or Fold3. So I've added this to a future task to fill out the forms, and mail it off to Washington. Timothy J. Barron tim@timbarron.net http://timbarron.net
Jo, for Nathaniel, you might need to be looking for a "mother" Spencer instead of a father Spencer. It was common for a child out of wedlock to carry the mothers family name. Also another possible avenue: the child was raise under the married husband's name and then at some age - most likely at the death of the "father" when the child is told he was not the first born - he would switch to his natural father's name. In Wolfe county, I have seen both. I have a some handwritten pages, packed away, from a very merticulous and older person that researched the VA Spencers for a long number of years - that do not connect the Joseph and Mary Spencer of Lee Co, VA with the Joseph Spencer/Mary De Roachbroom family. (Which means that this Joseph may also be carrying the Mother's Family name.) I am through the John/Joanna Pennington (Is she from the Pennington's of Pennington Gap?) James/ Farabe (claimed by the Combs family) William/Nancy Caudill (The Caudill family is well documented). William/Nancy Jane Johnson (sometimes found as Dinky Jane Wright) and so forth for six more generations. Of note: one of my uncles saw "the great Spencer Bible" a long time ago (1966-ish) and said it had tons and tons of information. Where was it ... in Wolfe County KY was all he remembered. Finding that historical document would most likely go a long way in answering questions. Hi, Jo-- I have just been going through my Spencer book, by Mannuel Ray Spencer. I am descended from Moses Spencer, son of Joseph, son of William. I have a double line going back to Moses by way of the Whismans and Hobbs. My sister has a picture of a lady that belonged to our grandfather, James Floyd Rose, whose parents were David Bowen Rose and Mary Ann (CatherineP Whisman. I have a picture of them. Do you have Mannuel's book. It is quite good. Has over 400 pages. Lots of names and connections. I have found a mistake or two in the more recent names but in a book of this size, that is to be expected. I am related to the Swango Family via my Graandmother and Grandfather Rose. They were 3rd cousins. So when I get back so far, George WAshingon Swango is my 3X greatgrandfather--twice. I think geneology is fascinating. I like history and what is more interesting than the history of your own family?! I am researching my great-great-grandfather, William (Williamson) Spencer who married Louisa Hanks and then Catherine Wyatt (I come from Catherine) through their son Nathaniel. William had 21 children. There are some very serious Spencer researchers, and none of us can determine William's parents, although it seems obvious that he came from Joseph and Mary Spencer of Lee Co, VA. I come from their two sons; Moses d. Wolfe County, John d. Perry County. Would like to hear from other descendants.
