    3. I am putting together a written report regarding some of the Spencer branches in Wolfe, Powell, and Menifee; including census records. I offer substantial evidence that Delilah, wife of Elijah, was the daughter of Moses Spencer and Elizabeth Deaton; and therefore Elijah's 1st cousin once removed. My Spencer lines; My mother, Dora Drake, d/o Thurman Drake and Ila Spencer. Thurman s/o Alexander Drake and Candus Spencer, d/o James Captain Spencer and Mary Polly Robbins, s/o William Spencer and Nancy Caudill, s/o James Spencer and Farabe (who I believe to be Cherokee) s/o John Spencer and Joanna Pennington, s/o Joseph and Mary of Lee Co, VA. Ila d/o Nathaniel Spencer and Dora Johnson, s/o William (Williamson) Spencer and Catherine Wyatt, s/o (no one has this one figured out but he was no-doubt a part of the Spencer families of Lee Co, VA) Dora Johnson d/o John Johnson and Isabelle Spencer, d/o William T Spencer and Jamima (I don't yet know who she was) s/o Moses Spencer and Elizabeth Deaton. 3. My g-grandma was 6' tall. One day, she dressed in her son's clothes and walked to Dave Dalton's place. His wife knew about it and had let her know when they'd be gone. As she had a bad heart, she was in on the joke. Dave was a nervous little fellow, lol. Mahala was Green Brewer's wife. Anyway she put on a long over coat and went in and lay down on their couch, pretenting to be asleep. When the Dalton's returned, The wife hung back a little, as she knew he'd flip out. He opened the door, walked in, then seen my g-grandma. He thought she was a drunk that had wondered in and he started shaking, scared to death, lol. After he found out it was Mahala, he swore to get even with my grandpa, saying he had put her up to it. His wife had her hand over her mouth, trying not to laugh. I loved that story. They were investigating stories of  a creature they called a "Wolfman" in Wolfe County, Ky.  They said it was  a 7 foot tall wolf like creature that could walk on it's hind  leqgs. Just wondering if any of you locals (like Carol) has heard  of it. 3. My wife is related to the Spencer family through several of Joseph Charles’ children. It has been some time since we worked on the Spencer line, however back when we were more active in genealogy, we concluded that Delilah Spencer, Moses’ daughter, married Elijah Spencer. While a number of researchers have concluded otherwise, there seems sufficient evidence that Delilah is a Spencer rather than a Sparks (such as children’s birth records). Much anecdotal evidence, as you suggest, clearly points to Moses and Elizabeth as her parents. You cited the proximity of Elijah and Moses in the 1850 Federal Census; same is true in the 1840 Federal Census. Dr. Bill Rice Wolfe County <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Jo Spencer wrote (in part): I am researching Elijah and Delilah Spencer for a descendant (I come from Elijah's brother William.) Elijah's parents were James and Farabe, of Perry County. Elijah and Delilah are on the 1850 census Owsley Co (which became Wolfe.) They are living near Moses and Elizabeth (Deaton) Spencer. This is the Sandy Ridge area. I believe Delilah may have been their daughter; making her and Elijah 2nd cousins. They then moved to Powell/Menifee County. It is believed that Elijah was buried in the old Gladie Creek cemetery and then later moved when the paved road came through. Delilah is back in Wolfe County in 1880, with her children, Pherby and Robert D. She may be buried at the Ledford Cemetery at Pine Ridge. Does anyone have information about these families?

    1. [KYWOLFE] AncestryDNA Case Study: Solving the Family Mystery of Charity Brewer
    2. Timothy J. Barron
    3. Based on a recent DNA match, and some additional supporting research, I am now convinced beyond any reasonable doubt that Mahala Maynard can now be proven to the daughter of Charity Brewer. As many may know, this has been a subject of speculation and debate for years. Though family stories and lore abound, no documentation which meets a recognized genealogical standard of proof has ever been found to prove this. This new DNA evidence bridges this gap. Given the significance of this, I have chosen to document all steps in how the DNA match was applied and the additional research that was performed. The document is here: http://timbarron.net/genealogy/books_and_documents.html In the past, Rootsweb had a tendency to truncate and break weblinks. So if the above link does not work, simply visit the main page of my website (http://timbarron.net) and click on Genealogy, and then Books & Publications. If something is not clear in the document, I genuinely want to hear any critique and constructive feedback, etc. Timothy J. Barron tim@timbarron.net http://timbarron.net

    1. [KYWOLFE] Thomas Brewer - Son of Willis Brewer and Mahala Maynard
    2. Timothy J. Barron
    3. If you have thoroughly researched this family, I working on this lineage and have a very narrow request. I am seeking a piece of CONTEMPORANEOUS evidence that would meet a recognized genealogical standard of proof for demonstrating that Thomas was the son of Willis and Mahala. For example, I have been looking for a Kentucky register record of his 1885 death, which might list the parents, but haven't located it yet. And have also been looking through newspapers. A record pertaining to one of his siblings, which mentions a brother Thomas might suffice, such as on obituary. I am staring to look "horizontally" like this, as well. Items that will NOT suffice include "Data Collections" on Ancestry, which are simply extractions from family trees, and not recognized as genealogical standard of proof. Thank you kindly for helping direct me to any records. Timothy J. Barron tim@timbarron.net http://timbarron.net

    3. In sorting through just some of my AncestryDNA results, and making contact with a few of the people, I've been able to confirm the following relationships resulting from a DNA matches. John Hollon, Jr. and Elizabeth Mary "Polly" Gibbs * Third cousin once removed * Fourth cousin John Gibbs, Sr. and Hannah Mason Muchmore * Fifth cousin once removed Elijah Elkins and Jerusha Boothe * Fifth cousin * Fifth cousin * Fifth cousin once removed So it does provide a degree of comfort to confirm family tree research! It should be noted that the more distant a cousin, there is a possibility of NOT showing as a DNA match, etc. Timothy J. Barron tim@timbarron.net http://timbarron.net
