Wolfe County News - April 13, 1955 LOCAL SOLDIER IN EXERCISE 'APPLE JACK' Ft. Lewis, Wash., - Army Cpl. William J. Cox, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. George C. Cox, Campton, is among 26,000 soldiers slated to participate in Exercise Apple Jack during May at the Yakima Firing Center near Ft. Lewis, Washington. Apple Jack will test the efficiency of infantry and support units in mountainous and desert terrain. The stimulated use of atomic weapons will be one of the conditions of the exercise. Corporal Cox, whose wife, Mattie; is now living in Olympia, Wash., is a clark in the Service Company of the 2d Infantry Division's 23d Regiment. A member of the Alpha Gamma fraternity, he entered the Army in 1953 after his graduation from the University of Kentucky. ----- HOLLONSVILLE SOLDIER TRAINS IN GERMANY ASCHAFFENBURG, GER., - Pfc. Raymond G. Tyra, 21 son of Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Tyra, Hollonville, Kky., recently participated in a field training exercise in Germany with the 1st Infantry Division's 26th Regiment. Tyra, a driver in Headquarters Company from Ft. Knox, Ky., his basic training camp. Before entering the Army in April 1954, he was a farmer. ------- May 18, 1955 CAMPTON SOLDIER SERVES IN ALASKA Fort Richardson, Alaska - Pvt. Ralph L. Hatton, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hatton, Campton, Ky., recently arrived at Fort Richardson, Alaska and is now a member of the U.S. Army Alaska Headquarters. Wolfe County News - Oct. 26, 1955 LOUELLEN TUTT DIES AT HOLLY AT AGE OF 88 Lou Ellen Crawford Tutt was born August 18, 1867 at Holly, Ky, and died Friday evening, Oct. 21 at the home of Luther Ambrose in Berea, Ky. She was the daughter of the Rev. Hoy B. and Mrs. Orena Hollon Crawford. As a young woman she moved with her family to Bethel, Ky, and was a teacher in the public schools of Wolfe County for many years. She was married to Thomas Tutt of Bethel, Ky, on April 26, 1955. She was a devoted member of the Baptist Church through the years. For the past eight years she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Luther Ambrose of Berea, Ky. Mrs. Tutt is survived by her husband and six children; Mrs. D.H. Center, Berea, Ky.; Mrs. L.M. Ambrose, now of Bangkok, Thailand, Mrs. M.W. Abel, Lexington, Ky., J.B. Tutt, Lexington, Ky., and T.K. Tutt of Louisville and R.B. Tutt of Effingham, Ill. There are also 25 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Menifee Trent in the Laurel Baptist Church, Sunday p.m. One of her grandsons the son of Luther Ambrose, sang two special songs, which had been favorites of his grandmother's at her funeral, interment was in the Bethel Cemetery. Wolfe County News - Sept. 14, 1955 Mrs. Malvina Carroll, born in Wolfe County, July 5, 1867 died on Sept. 13 at 12:15 a.m. after a serious illness of about nine weeks. She was married to James Daniel Carroll in 1885, and he died in 1927. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. She is survived by the following sons and daughters; W.H. Carroll, Winchester; Mrs. Dora Bush, Zachariah; J.E. Carroll, Zachariah; Mrs. Rose Kincaid, and Mrs. Loura Hibbard both of Beattyville, Route 2; and Lester Kincaid, Winchester, and Dudley B. Carroll, McLeansboro, Ill. Funeral was at the residence at Beattyville Route 2 at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14th, with Rev. Willie Taylor officiating and Hearne Funeral Home in Charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Big Andy Cemetery. Carole
Wolfe County News - Sept. 14, 1955 JOE WARDEN DIES IN WASHINGTON Joe Warden, former resident of Wolfe County, died in Washington, August 17 after an illness of several years. Mr. Warden came to Wolfe county as a young man interested in the logging industry. He was married to Pearl Gosney, daughter of the late Charlie and Melissa Tutt Gosney of Campton. The Wardens celebrated their Golden Wedding a few months ago. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Travis, Voyne, Darrell, Wendell and several grandchildren. Carole

Rice, Trent is presently taking basic training at Sampson Air Force Base; N.Y. It was announced by A/1C James Orr, local Air Force Recruiter. Billy was enlisted in the Air Force, July 27 at Ashland, Ky., and left immediately for New York where he will take eleven weeks of basic to teach him the Air Force way of life. After basic he will be given a ten day leave to visit friends and relatives before reporting to his next assignment. Airman Orr says Billy will be trained in one of the 400 jobs now available in the Air Force and if he qualifies, he will attend one of the 225 technical schools now being used by the Air Force to train their young men and women for their place in the Air Force. ------- March 16, 1955 Kenneth Creech, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Creech of Campton, Ky., had recently been promoted to Private first class. He is now stationed with the U.S. Army in Pusan, Korea. He went across in middle of November, 1954 FT. KNOX, KY. Feb. 29 - The following men from this area have completed eight weeks of Army Basic Combat Training conducted by the 3d Armored Division (Spearhead) here at Ft. Knox. Pvt. Alvin R. Tibbs, son of Mrs. Mary Tibbs, Landsaw and Pvt. Joseph E. Ratliff, son of Buford Ratliff, Campton. During this initial period of training, they attended classes on basic military subject and were trained in the fundamentals of combat, including the firing of basic weapons. --- July 6, 1955 LOCAL AIRMAN RETURNING FROM THE FAR EAST FE/AMCOM Air Base, Japan - A/2C William V. Denniston, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Verney Dennistion, Campton will return home soon on leave following an eighteen months tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force in the Phillippines. Stationed at the Clark Air Force Base, Airman Denniston is assigned to the 62th Maintenance Group, Manilla Air Force Depot. The Depot, a part of the Far East Logistic Force, provides supply and maintence support to the largest geographical area in the Far East, including Formosa, Thailand, Indo-China, Australia and Honkong. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jocie Ann Tolson; two daughters, Mrs. William Pollard, Middletown, Ohio, and four sons, A2/c Arberry Tolson, Jr., Smyrna, Tenn; Charles Tolson, West Liberty; M/Sgt. Adams (Watt) 69, merchant of Pine Ridge, died at the Clark County Hospital in Winchester on Feb. 9, 1955 after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 17, 1885 the son of the late Randal Adams and Mary J. Baker Adams. He was united in marriage in 1914 to Mary J. Spencer Adams, d/o the late D.F. Spencer and Polly Miller Spencer. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mary J. Adams, Pine Ridge; eight daughters, Mrs. Emma L. Champion, Chester, Pa; Mrs. Flossie O'Bryant, Dayton; Mrs. Sally M. Heiflner, Winchester; Mrs. Rena Noble, Dayton; Mrs. Ruth Burchett, Dayton, Mrs. Frances Wages, Indianapolis, Ind; Miss Billie Berle Adams, Pine Ridge, James Edward Adams, Indianapolis, Ind; Maurice C. Wolfe County News - Jan. 8, 1964 WOLFE NATIVE RITES JAN. 9TH Jerry Weldon South of Mason Ohio, formerly of Wolfe County died Tuesday morning, Jan. 7 at Bethesda Hospital, Cincinnati. The body was returned to Herald and Stewart Funeral Home, West Liberty, and will lie in state until time for services at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9 at Hazel Green Christian Church. Interment will be in Hazel Green Cemetery with Hazel Green Masonic Lodge performing its ritual. South was the son of the late Harlan and Emma Perkins South. He is survived by his wife, Maureen Sallee South, and one son, Robert of Mason, Ohio; one brother, Hershel South of Indiana, and two sisters, Mrs. Opaleigh Rose and Mrs. Elizabeth Holliday of Cincinnati. Wolfe County News - Jan. 8, 1964 WOLFE COUNTIAN DIES FOLLOWING BRAIN SURGERY Wayne Faulkner, 63, of Hazel Green, who was working as a pipefitter in Cincinnati, died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, at the UK Medical Center, Lexington, following brain surgery. Born at Morehead, March 17, 1910, he was the son of the late John W. and Matilda Donohue Faulkner. Faulkner was a veteran of World War II and served in several battle areas and campaigns. According to a family spokesman, Faulkner had been staying with his brother, Robert Faulkner, in Cincinnati and was working as a pipefitter. about three weeks ago he had been found in an alley in Cincinnati and had been hit about the head. However, he seemed to suffer no ill effects, said the family, and returned to Hazel Green. Later he became ill of what was thought flu, but later developed severe headaches and vomiting. He was taken to the UK med. center where brain surgery was performed. He is survived by three brothers, Elwood Faulkner of Clearfield, Dennie Faulkner of Clay City, and Robert Faulkner of Cincinnati, and one sister, Mrs. Viola Brewer of Hazel Green. He was never married. Funeral services were conducted a 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, at Providence Missionary Baptist Church at Trent by Revs. Clell Miller and Hershel Halsey. Burial was in the Hazel Green Cemetery where an honor guard from Fort Knox was in charge of military rites. Herald and Stewart Funeral Home made arrangements. Carole
Wolfe County News - Oct. 1954 DR. W.H. HOBBS DIED SEPT. 27 AT LEXINGTON Dr. W.H. Hobbs was born on July 22, 1880 and died on Sept. 27, 1954 in a Lexington Hospital. He was united in marriage to Myrtle Cable and to this union were born three sons, who survive him and one daughter. The wife and daughter both preceded him in death, many years ago. He afterwards was united in marriage to Maggie Russell and to this union were born two daughters. Dr. Hobbs practiced medicine for about 45 years, having doctored at Blue Diamond Coal Co., for 16 of those years. He was retired in 1946. He is survived by his third wife; three sons by his first wife; E.P. Hobbs, Hazel Green; Sherman Hobbs, Owensboro; and Finely Hobbs, Beattyville; also two daughters by a second marriage; Mrs. Lee Crutchfield, Hazard; and Mrs. Opal Robinson, Lexington. Funeral was held at Maggard and Garnett Funeral Home, Hazard. He was laid to rest beside his first wife in the Hobbs cemetery, Fincastle, Ky. Carole
Wolfe County News - June 4, 1952 LENGTHY ILLNESS FATAL IN WOLFE TO BELLE HOLLON Mrs. Belle Hollon, age 84, passed away Thursday May 22, after a long illness. She had a stroke last August, and has been sick every since. In the year 1885 she was married to Ike Hollon, who preceded her in death, on Feb. 1, 1947. God blessed them and permitted them to live together 62 years almost. They never had any children of their own; but they reared six: Mrs. Josie Graham, Bethany, Mrs. Maude Brewer, Trace Fork, Mrs. Dixie Tyra (deceased) Easter Gevedon, Indiana, Corbett Hollon and Mrs. Verna Rose, both of Hollonsville. "Aunt " Belle made her home with the later two mentioned. There were others who stayed with them a few years at a time. She leaves a brother, Richard Terrill of Elizabethtown, Ky and a sister, Mrs. Eva Creech, Indiana and a host of relatives and friends. She was united with the Christian church in 1932. Rev. Harry Stockton and Rev. Henry Hall conducted the service and Ray and Blake funeral home from Jackson were in charge of funeral and burial arrangements. Burial was in the Hollon and Terrell Cemetery near her home immediately following the funeral. The children were all pesent save Easter Gevedon who came late, about an hour after the burial; due to having received the news so late. Pall bearers were Bufford Hollon, Tutt Hollon, Fonzie and Ford Graham. Carole

Wolfe County News - Oct. 1, 1952 FUNERAL SERVICES HELD SATRUDAY FOR LOCAL HEART ATTACK VICTIM Zacharia, Ky - Funeral services were conducted Satruday afternoon at the Pine Hill Baptist church for J.J. (Jake) Bush, 72, a retired Torrent, Ky. merchant, who was found dead Thursday afternoon in a cabin he owned near here in the Big Bend oil fields. Burial was in the Bush Cemetery here. Mr. Bush, who was widely known throughout this section, operated a general store, in partners with his brother, Edd Bush at Torrent for many years. He was never married, and had been living with a sister, Mrs. Addie Spencer at Torrent. A native of Wolfe county, he was a member of the Pine Hill Baptist Church and of the Torrent Masonic Lodge. He owned a cabin in the oil fields and occasionally went there to spend a day or two. He had gone out there Thursday morning with Willie Wireman, a foreman in the oil fields, as Mr. Wireman went to work. Wireman said Mr. Bush told him that he was going squirrel hunting and then do some work around the cabin. When Wireman returned about 4 p.m. he found Mr. Bush slumped on the floor, and it appeared that he had been dead only a short time. Powell County Coroner Clayton Fryar was called, and following an inquest at the cabin, he returned a verdict of natural death. He said there was no evidence of foul play. It was decided by the six man coroner's jury that the victim suffered a heart attack. The body was taken to the Hearne Funeral Home at Stanton and was returned to Edd Bush residence Friday afternoon where it remained until time for funeral services. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Spencer, Mrs. W.M. Adams, Leeco, and Mrs. Celia Holden, Dayton, Ohio, and two brothers, Edd Bush and John P. Bush, both of Zacharia, Ky. Carole
December 17, 1952 CAMPTON MAN KILLED, THREE HURT IN AUTO-TRUCK COLLISION MONDAY Charlie W. Cox Claimed in Crash Charlie W. Cox was killed instantly and three other persons were injured about 9:05 p.m. on Monday evening, Dec. 15, when the car in which they were riding collided with the rear end of a trailer truck about 1 1/2 miles east of Clay City, Ky on Highway 15. Charlie W. Cox, about 48, driver of the car, died instantly of a broken neck when he was thrown from the car onto the highway. His left arm was also broken. Three passengers in his car were also injured, Sterling McQuinn, his wife and Mrs. Viola McQuinn all of Campton, were taken to the Clark County hospital, Winchester, where the authorities said all were suffering from severe head facial and body lacerations and bruises. None were thought to be in a serious condition, however. The truck driver, Virgil Goss, 39 of Hazard was not injured. State trooper Paul Combs, who investigated the accident, said that Gross was charged with negligent homicide. He made bond and will appear or examining trial on Jan. 7. Trooper Combs said that Cox evidently lost control of his car and that it struck the rear wheel of the trailer. The car was going east, the truck west. The car was damaged badly and was hurled into the ditch. The truck belonged to the Mine Service Co., Lothair, Ky. The McQuinns had been to Winchester where they attended the tobacco sales. Cox had driven them to market. Charlie Cox is survived by his wife, two sons, Pfc. Jackie Cox who is stationed in England and Danny Cox at home and two daughters at home, Phyllis and a baby girl. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Cox of Clay City, Ill., and two brothers, Lawrence and Sollie Cox both of Paducah, Ky., and a sister Lenora who is married and lives in Lexington. Funeral and burial services had not been planned as The News goes to press. The body was taken to Hearne Funeral Home. Dec. 24, 1952 LAST RITES FOR CHARLIE W. COX HELD IN WOLFE Campton, Ky - Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at the Campton Baptist church for Charlie W. Cox, 40, who died instantly Monday night from injuries received in a collision between this car and a loaded trailer-truck, on Ky. 15 in Powell County between Stanton and Clay City. Burial was in the Evans cemetery with Hearne Fuenral Home in charge of arrangements. Three other passengers in the Cox car suffered head cuts and other minor injuries and were taken to the Clark County hospital, Winchester, for treatment, by an ambulance from the Hearne Funeral Home. The accident happened within four miles of another accident earlier Monday night, when a Waltersville Man, John W. Patton, was killed instantly when struck by an automobile. Wolfe County News - July 1952 L.A. BROWN, 76 DIES IN SLEEP AT HAZEL GREEN L.A. Brown, age 76, was found dead in bed Satruday morning, July 19, when his wife went to awaken him. He had been in very poor health for sometime and had a very bad heart condition. If he had lived until Sunday they would have celebrated their 54th Wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Brown have been making their home at the Hazel Green hospital for the past year since his health has been so bad. Hearne Funeral home prepared the body for burial and Wells Funeral Home of Hamilton was called to transport the body back to their home in Hamilton, Ohio where funeral services and burial will take place, possibly on Tuesday of this week. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alta Brown, and two sons, W. Delmer of Hazel Green, and Clifford, of Hamilton, Ohio. Also two sisters; Mrs. Susie Botts, of Cincinnati, and Burd of Washington, and other relatives and many friends. Mr. and Mrs. Brown have been making their home in Hazel Green for the past year and have endeared themselves to many people here. He was a retired interior decorator. Carole
