Wolfe County News - Dec. 19, 1951 MARY PERKINS WOLFE NATIVE, GOES TO REWARD Mrs. Mary Perkins, age 79 was born May 1, 1872 at Lee City, KY d/o W.S. and Jane Lindon Maddox. She was united in marriage to Larkin Alexander Perkins on December, 28, 1888. To this uinon were born eight children, Elvin of Austin, Ind; Everett of Mansfield, Ohio; Henry, deceased, Lucinda Oditt, Midland, Ohio; Jane Back, Belknap, Ky.: Angeline McClure, deceased, Frances Oditt, Middltown, Ohio, Mabel Crase, Belknap, Ky. She also reared four of her grandchildren, Arlie, Luna, Ruby and Ethel McClure. She departed this life on December 12, 1951 at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 12 days. She was a member of the Church of God for about 63 years. She leaves besides her children, 22 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren, a host of friends and other relatives. Funeral services were conducted at the Church of God, Belknap with Rev. Forest Bailey, pastor officiating and Alango Craft assisting, on December 15, 1951. Active pall bearers were 8 grandsons, Arlie McClure, Sam, Lafayette, Carlos, and Donald Oditt, Thomas Perkins and Carman Crase. Burial followed in the Belknap cemetery under the direction of Hearne Funeral Home, Campton. Carole
Wolfe County News - May 1956 LENGTHY ILLNESS CLAIMS LIFE OF ROBERT MILLER Robert L. Miller, born Nov. 13, 1871 died May 5, 1956 at the age of 84 years. He had been ill for several months. He was the son of the late David Crocket Miller and Carolyn Boyd Miller. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bertie Miller, of Hazel Green, and four daughters: Mrs. O.G. Henry, Middletown, Ohio; Mrs. Reva Howard, Hazel Green; Mrs. E.T. Kash Jr., Hazel Green and Miss Daisy Miller, Somerset. One son, Attorney E.L. Miller, Campton; one brother, John Miller of Winchester; two sisters; Mrs. Lizzie Cobb, Campton, and Mrs. Willie Hanks, Middletown, Ohio. Also five grandsons, one granddaughter and one great grandson. Funeral services were conducted Monday, afternoon at one o'clock C.S.T. at the Hazel Green Methodist Church with Rev. J. Ryan Nevius, Pastor of the First Christian Church, West Liberty officiating assisted by Rev. C.L. Thompson of Hazel Green. MILLIE NEELY, 75 DIES IN WOLFE Millie Ann Neely, age 75 died at her home at Mary, KY. on Tuesday morning, Sept. 2, 1952. Mrs. Neely has been sick for several weeks. Wolfe County News - Jan. 9, 1955 FRANK PATTON DIED SATURDAY AT AGE OF 90 Frank Patton, age 90, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Cora Shepherd, in Campton, Saturday, January 8th. Funeral services were conducted at the home on Monday, the 10th at 10:00 with Rev. John Dalton and Rev. Charles Rose in charge. Burial was in the family cemetery Monday afternoon at Vortex. He is survived by one son, John Patton, of Campton, and five daughters; Mrs. Esther Harris, Campton; Mrs. Cora Shepherd, Campton; Mrs. Dixie Rowe, Muskegan, Mich; Mrs. Alma Divine, and Mrs. Viola Biddle, both of Covington; about 20 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Wolfe County News - March 14, 1956 BRACK CARROLL DIED MARCH 8 AT NEWPORT Brack Carroll, 55 died in Newport on Thursday night, March 8 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Joan Feebach. He is survived by his wife, Queenie Carroll, Lexie, and six daughters: Miss Bessie Carroll, Lexie, Mrs. Joan Feebach, and Miss Bertie Carroll, both of Newport, Miss Katie Carroll, Jacksonville, N.C. also Virginia Carroll and Geraldine Carroll all of Lexie, two sons, James and J.B. Carroll, both of Lexie, two sisters, Mrs. Dora Bush, Middletown, Ohio and another sister, Lou, five brothers, Bill Carroll, Middletown, Ohio, Jim Carroll, Newport; Mort Carroll, Mt. Wolfe County News - Nov. 2, 1955 FALL INJURIES PROVE FATAL TO JOHN MALONEY John Maloney, 79, died on Oct. 24, 1955 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington as a result of injuries received when he fell over a cliff ten days previously. Funeral was held at the home near Bethany, Ky., with the Reverends Colter and Walter officiating. Burial under the arrangements of Hearne Fuenral Home was held at two p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16. He is survived by four sons, Carl, Walled Lake, Mich; Fred, Detroit, Mich; Samp, Bethany and Harry, Walled Lake, Mich. Also four daughters; Mrs. Lela Knaro, Middletown, Ohio; Mrs. Julia Whisman, Detroit, Mich; Mrs. Daisy Morris, Greighton, Mich., and Mrs. Lillie Johnson, Farmington, Michigan. Wolfe County News - Dec. 1948 LEONARD STAMPER DIED IN MORGAN J. Leonard Stamper, a prominent farmer of Morgan County, born in 1889, passed away December 2, 1948, at the age of 59. He died of a heart attack in the Good Samaritan hospital in Lexington. Funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian Church at Ezel at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 4. by Dr. Gabriel Banks of Morehead. Burial followed in the Ezel cemetery and was in charge of Potter and Co., Funeral Home at West Liberty. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Golden Stamper, two small daughters and a married daughter, Mrs. Pauline McKenzie, of Campton and one son, Woodroe Stamper, of Grassy Creek. Also one brother, Will Stamper, of Grassy Creek. Pallbearers for the funeral were Harold Rose, Walter Bach, Glen Oldfield, C.F. J. Edward Cunningham pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating and assisted by Rev. Strong, pastor of the First Church of God. Burial was in the Evans Cemetery under the direction of Hearne Funeral Home. Survivors include the parents and six brothers; Earl, Dayton, Ohio; Willie, Franklin, Ohio, Donald, Harold and Vernon all of Cincinnati, Ohio and Jackie at home with his mother, also a half brother, Benny Joe Harrod of Dayton, Ohio; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary Horton and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Martha Campbell both of Campton, numerous aunts and uncles and other relatives and a host of friends. Wolfe County News - Jan. 4, 1956 JOE D. NICKELL DIES SUDDENLY ENROUTE HOME Joe D. Nickell, 66 s/o the late Caleb Nickell, died Thursday night, Dec. 29 enroute home from a trip to visit his son. He became ill in the car and was pronunced dead by Dr. Paul Maddox when they stopped at the Clinic in Campton for medical help. He had been sick for about three years. Funeral was held at the Amyx Mission Church at Buskirk Sunday, Jan. 1 at ten o'clock with the Missionaries in charge. Funeral was at Cannel City in the Burton Cemetery in charge of Potter Funeral home. He is survived by his wife, Nanny Taulbee Nickell, Helechawa; five sons; Burnice, Dayton, Ohio; Ralph in Germany; Herman, Helechawa; Hubert, Daysboro and Herschell, Daysboro. Wolfe County News - May 16, 1956 PROMINENT WOMAN DIES OF HEART ATTACK Mrs. Mary Graham McGuire, 66, widow of Walter Turner McGuire, died about 1:00 a.m. Wednesday while enroute to a Lexington hospital after suffering a heart attack. She was in an amburlance driven by Herbert Holman, Jr. deputy Powell County coroner, and accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Armour. It is believed that death struck Mrs. McGuire in the vicinity of Virden. She was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Clark County Hospital. She had suffred a heart atack a few months ago, but had made substantial progress toward recovery, and had been putting in some time daily at her post of duty. She had hed that position since 1941. She was a member of the Clay City Methodist Church where she served as organist 30 years, and was a charter member of Pilot Knob Eastern Star Chaper, Stanton, and was a member of the Col. George Nicholas Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a charter applicant for the newly formed Auxillary of Robert Gabriel White Post of the American Legion and a former member of the Filson Club. Mrs. McGuire was kind, thoughtful, helpful and courteous to all with whom she came in contact. She had many friends. She served as secretary of the Powell County Chapter of the Red Cross during World War I, was the first Democratic Chairwoman in Powell county and was a member of the National Postmasters Association. Mrs. McGuire's parents were J.B. and Lida Eaton, early settlers of Clay City; Her husband, a native of Lee County, served in the Kentucky Legislature, representing Powell and Wolfe counties in 1921. He also served an interim appointment as Postmaster of Clay City. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Lowell D. Puffenberger, Ashland: two sons, Walter McGuire, Denver, Colorado and Kelly M. McGuire of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Maupin and a brother, John C. Eaton, of Clay City, and two grandchildren. The body was taken to Hearne Funeral Home, Stanton, and prepared for burial and later removed to the residence. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Clay City Methodist Church by the Rev. G.C. Gaunce, burial in the Eaton Cemetery, Clay City. Active pallbearers were Lynn, Johnnie, Louie and Robert Eaton, Harry O'Rear and Asa Mize. Honorary bearers includeded Johnny Kennon, Joe and Tom Mountz, Sam Carr, W.C. Rose, Sr., W.E. Wolfe County News - May 16, 1956 PROMINENT ATTORNEY CLAIMED AT LEXINGTON Elmer Drake, one of the most genial members of the Fayette bar, died Saturday morning. A heart attack suffered at midnight at his home, 110 Tahoma Road, Lexington, proved fatal to this 54-year old attorney about 8:30 a.m. Saturday May 12. A native of Campton he was born on May 5, 1902 a son of Mrs. Lucy Hanks Drake, now of Lexington, and the late James Drake. He was a member of the First Methodist Church, the Kentucky Mountain Club of Which he served as president in 1938, and the Fayette, Kentucky and American Bar Associations. He was graduated from Wesleyan College with a bachelor's degree in 1927 and received his law degree from the University of Kentucky in 1931. He was admitted to the bar in the same year. Besides his mother he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Della Soard Drake, and three sisters: Mrs. James H. Harper, Lexington; Mrs. James R. Welch, Ft. Thomas; and Mrs. T.E. McMullen, Philadelphia. Funeral services were conducted at Lexington Monday afternoon at three o'clock with the Rev. Steadman Bagby of the First Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the Lexington Cemetery. Mr. Drake was widely known in Wolfe County and had a host of friends here. He is the nephew of C.M. Hanks and Fred Hanks of Campton and Finley Hanks of Pine Ridge. Carole
Wolfe County News - August 31, 1955 HEART ATTACK PROVES FATAL TO STANTON MAN Charles Andrew Denniston, 70, well known Stanton merchant, died at his home last Sunday night, August 28 of a heart attack. A native of Menifee County, he came to Powell County eight years ago and had since been in the merchandising business at Rosslyn and Stanton. The deceased was born September 27, 1884 in Menifee, the son of the late James and Sarah Lawson Denniston. He had been a member of the Church of God since his youth. Funeral services will be held Wedneday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock at the Stanton Christian Church, conducted by Bro. W.J. Chapman of Montgomery County. Burial will be in the Fortune Cemetery, with interment in charge of Hearne Funeral Home of Stanton.
