Wolfe County News - Dec. 9, 1964 CARRIE MIZE, 79 DIES IN HOSPITAL Mrs. Carrie Lee Rose Mize died December 3 in Central Baptist Hospital, Leixngton, where she had been a patient for several weeks. She was 79, being born May 5, 1885. She is survived by one son, William Oldham Mize of Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Funeral service was conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 in Hazel Green Christian Church by Rev. J. Ryan Nevius, assisted by the pastor, Rev. Oliver Mason. Active pallbearers were Gerald Howard, Ralph Lockard, Bill Lacy, Roy Cecil, Ralph Long, Bruce Blankenship, Paul Moore and William Rice. Honorary pallbearers were O.D. Rose, Dr. Dana Snyder, H.A. Stovall, Dillard Graham, Dr. Rex Center and Dr. Paul F. Maddox. Burial was in Hazel Green Cemetery with Herald and Stewart Funeral Home of West Liberty in charge of arrangements. Carole
Wolfe County News - Dec. 9, 1964 ED BUCHANAN DIES SUDDENLY R.E. (Ed) Buchanan, 78, retired farmer of Hazel Green, died at his home at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, following a heart attack he suffered the day before. Born at Stillwater, he was a son of the late George W. and Gillie Ann Rose Buchanan, pioneer Wolfe citizens. He was a member of the Methodist Church and had served in World War I. He also was a Kentucky Colonel. Surviving are the wife, Stella McClure Buchanan; two daughters, Mrs Jack Hutchins of Hazel Green, and Mrs. Geo. Sundermeir of Uma, Ariz; three sons, Roger Edward of Middletown, Ohio, George L. of Lexington, and James Bernard of Somerset; one brother, J.B. Buchanan of Hazel Green, and three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Burcham of Stillwater, Mrs. Hazel Combs of Hazel Green, and Mrs. Hattie Murgrave of Middletown, Ohio. She was a native of Wolfe County and member of the Church of God. Other survivors are a son, Dock Junior Dunn, Campton; her mother, Mrs. Nannie Hollon Gibbs, Campton, a brother, Felix Gibbs, Middletown; three sisters, Mrs. Josie Coffey, Middletown, Mrs. Carrie Hollon of New Madison, Ohio and Mrs. Zelda Ritchie of Campton and nine grandchildren. A native of Wolfe County, she was a member of the First Church of God. Other survivors are nine sons, Ray Harris, Campton; Vernon Harris, Germany; and Willie, Corbet Lee, Donald Edgar, Felix Junior, Robert Douglas, George Mason, Bennie John Harris, Middletown; three daughters, Mrs. Lillie Mae Thorpe, Mrs. Nancy Elizabeth Dishman and Miss Zeldia Gay Harris, Middletown; her mother, Mrs. Nannie J. Gibbs, of Campton, a brother, Felix Ray Gibbs, Middletown; four sisters, Mrs. Josie Coffee and Mrs. Ella Dunn, Middletown; Mrs. Zeldia Ritchie, Campton, and Mrs. Carrie Hollon, West Manchester, Ohio, and 11 grandchildren. Wolfe County News - Feb. 12, 1964 BOB KINCAID, 85, DIED FEBRUARY 7 Bob (Robert) Kincaid, 85, died at the home of a daughter, Lola Bush, at Zachariah at 2:15 p.m. Feb. 7 after about a year's illness. A retired oilfield worker and farmer, he was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. He is survived by five sons and two daughters; Osa of Campton, Edd of Isom, Earl of Zachariah, Shelby of Indianapolis. Lola Bush of Zachariah, Erma Judd of Pontiac, Mich;; one brother, Jake Kincaid; two sisters, Dallia Treadway of Ravenna and Susie Cable of Sarasota, Fla.; 27 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Pine hill Baptist Church with Rev. Eliga Smith and Rev. James Clark officiating. Wolfe County News - Feb. 5, 1964 MORT STAMPER DIES JAN. 26 Mort Stamper, 89, retired minister, died at his home at Trent at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26. He was a native of Wolfe County and had been a Missionary Baptist minister for 45 years. Surviving are four sons, Troy Stamper of Dayton, Ohio, Andrew Stamper of Middletown, Ohio, Fred Stamper of Cincinnati, and Kelly Stamper of Trent; three daughters, Mrs. Tressie Peck of Middletown, Ohio, Mrs. Della Edwards of Newport, and Mrs. May Faulkner of Clay City; two brothers, Drew Stamper of Dayton, Ohio and Tom Stamper of Mt. Sterling, and 32 grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the Lower Laurel Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, by Rev. Willie Taylor. She is survived by her husband, Ottis Terrill, four sons and three daughters all at home. Sons: Alvin, Lonnie, Roy, and George Terrill. Daughters are: Letha Louise, Laura Helen and Maude Dale Terrill. Wolfe County News - March 11, 1964 Mrs. Sarah Sewell, 88, a native of Wolfe County, passed away at her home at California, Ky, Feb. 26. Mrs. Sewell was the wife of the late Rev. Benjamin Sewell, a retired Methodist Minister, who preceded her in death five years ago. Mrs. Sewell was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Byrd. She was a teacher in the Wolfe County schools and postmistress at Campton for several years. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Virgie Smith, Newport, and Mrs. Audrey Clift, California, Ky; one son, Ben Sewell, Jr, Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother, W.L. Byrd, Stockton, California; seven grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. Services were conducted by the Rev. O.W. Robinson, Feb. 29 at the Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial in Grandview Cemetery. Wolfe County News - April 8, 1964 JESSE ROSE RITES HELD MARCH 14TH Funeral service was conducted in Ohio Saturday, March 14, for Jesse Rose with Rev. Henry Howard officiating. Burial was in Springboro, Ohio cemetery. His death was caused by a heart condition and death come in the Middletown, Ohio, hospital on March 12. He retired from work at Frigidaire 7 years ago after working there for several years. He was a foreman in the oil fields for 12 years or more prior to that. He was the son of the late James W. and Rachel Brown Rose and was born in Wolfe county, March 5, 1891. He married Margaret Combs, October 24, 1911. To this union were born three daughters and three sons, Opal, Monzella and Freida, Elbert, Lionel Jack; ten grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Emma Cartwright, one brother, Charlie Rose, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Wolfe County News - April 8, 1964 J.H. NICKELL, 75 WOLFE NATIVE PASSES APRIL 1 Jim Howard Nickell, 75, of Georgetown, Ky and a native of Belknap, Wolfe County, died March 31 in a Georgetown hospital. The body was returned to Morgan County for funeral on Friday, April 3, at Potter Chapel in West Liberty, and burial was in the family plot at Cannel City. Mr. Nickell was born in Wolfe County, May 1, 1888, a son of Andy Campbell Nickell and Rowena Wilson Nickell, one of eight children. He married Cynthia Bell Holbrok in 1909. He was converted at a revival conducted by Rev. Will Lindon at the Church of God in 1911. He was a citizen of high character and true christian principles. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Woodrow Vest, of Scott County, and Mrs. Charles Ruark, Mt. Sterling; four sons, Andy Nickell, Dayton, Ohio; Henry Nickell, Raven, Virginia; Berkley Nickell, Insko and Ova W. Nickell, Temperance, Mich; two brothers, Joseph Nickell of Daysboro, and John Nickell of Insko; a sister, Mrs. Rollie Prater, Insko. Officiating ministers were Rev. Forest Bailey and A.C. She was born Feb. 24, 1892 in Magoffin County, a daughter of Sarah Crase Holbrooks and John Henry Holbrooks. She was a member of the Church of God and was the widow of the late Jim Howard Nickell. She is survived by the following children; Andy Campbell Nickell, Dayton, O., Henry Oakley Nickell, Raven, VA., Irene Vest, Georgetown, Ky., Berkley Nickell, Insko, Ova Nickell, Temperance, Mich., and Justine Ruark, Mt. Wolfe County News - Jan. 29, 1964 Lula Cockerham Brewer born Nov. 16, 1887, departed this life Jan. 17, 1964, at the age of 76 years, and two months. In August 1902 she was united in marriage to Richmond Brewer who preceded her in death seven years and two months. To this union were born 9 children, three preceding her in death. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Junie Profitt, with whom she made her home in Middletown, Ohio, since the death of her husband; Mrs. Ava James, Dry Ridge, Mrs. Odra Wallace, Circleville, Ohio, three sons, Arthur, Dorsie and Arnold Brewer all of Middletown, Ohio; 23 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; three sisters, Laura Hollon and Beulah Dalton of Landsaw and Bessie Kidd of Morgan County; one brother, Claude Cockerham, of Wolfe County. She was united with the Church of Christ in 1902 and was a faithful and devoted Christian worker in the Church of Christ for 57 years. Funeral service was held at the Landsaw Church of Christ, Landsaw, Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Willie Taylor and Rev. J.M. Cockerham officiating. Interment in Landsaw cemetery.
