    1. [KYWOLFE] Henry and Mary DUNN WEBB Research
    2. Henry and Mary DUNN WEBB Research: Dr. Rice, Thank you for your suggestions on my WEBB family research. I do think the Samuel H. WEBB at the Eastern State Hospital is probably the son of Henry and Mary DUNN WEBB. I will try to get more information on him from the hospital. The name Harrison WEBB on the 1860 census has always been worrisome. I have tried every combination of William Henry Harrison WEBB that I can think of to try to identify him in the 1850 census. No luck. I have also tried other spellings: WEB, WEBBE, WELL, etc. If you can think of others, please share. The 1860 census for Owsley County has one additional WEBB family. James W. WEBB is enumerated in South Fork. I do not know how close this area is to Swiftsville. Two of his children have names of interest: Green and Alamrinda. In 1870 and 1880, this family resides in Jackson County. In 1850 they resided in Johnson County. The 1870 census for Wolfe County gets interesting. There are two WEBB families living in Hazel Green but in different precincts: Henry WEBB and Nancy WEBB, the widow of Isham. Isham and Nancy WEBB were enumerated in Morgan County in 1860. In 1880, both families are still in Wolfe County; Henry is in Precinct 6 and Nancy is in Precinct 6. Census records of the Isham and Nancy WEBB family 1850-1880 are listed below. --------------------------------------- 1850 Carroll County, VIRGINIA, District 11: Isham G.WEBB, 29, born VA. Other household members are Nancy WEBB, 30; William W., 7; Ann E., 6; and James A., 3. 1860 Morgan County, KENTUCKY: Isam (Isham) G. WEBB, age 39, born VA. Other household members are Nancy WEBB, age 40, born VA William W., 18; Ann E Webb, 16; James Webb, 13; Mary I Webb, 9; Sarah Webb, 7; Jesse T Webb, 5; Martha Webb, 3; and Peter Combs , 22. NOTE: Isham G. WEBB enlisted in the Confederate Army as a Private on 27 October 1861 in Beaver (Floyd County), Kentucky for a period of 12 months. He served in Capt. William MYNHEIR’S (1st) Co. A, 5 Regiment Kentucky Infantry. He was reported sick in the hospital at Halston Springs, Virginia (Scott County) on the 31 December 1861 – 30 April 1862 Muster Roll. The May – June Muster Roll states that he died 16 may 1862 of disease (not specified) on 16 May 1862 at Emory and Henry College, Virginia. His amount of money left was $3.05. The campus is situated in Washington County, Virginia, which is part of the mountain region of Southwest Virginia. The cozy hills of southwest Virginia seemed a perfect spot to the Confederate command in Richmond, Virginia for a hospital. The secluded environment, they concluded, was an unlikely location to see combat. The command chose the Emory and Henry College for their hospital. This campus was located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and was adjacent to a railroad. Thus, the General Hospital at Emory and Henry College was born in May 1862. Other household members are Thomas, age 14, Charlotte, age 12, and John A. B. WEBB, age 9. Henry WEBB is listed in Wolfe County, Hazel Green, Pct. 3. 1880 Wolfe County, KENTUCKY, Pct. 3: Nancy WEBB, age 60, born VA, widowed. Other household members are Jesse T., 24, son; Sarah HOUSE, 18, daughter; John A. Susan Arminta "Mittie" WEBB: My great-grandmother, Susan Arminta "Mittie" WEBB married Thomas George LAUGHLIN 26 November 1882 in Grayson County, TEXAS. She moved to TEXAS sometime after the 1880 census. No one in the family know why or how. My great-grandfather was killed in a farm accident about 1905. She married Edd C. MORROW, a man who worked on their farm, on 20 November 1906, and moved to IDAHO after 1910. Her oldest and youngest sons (Elmer and Joe) moved with her. The LAUGHLIN family had little contact with her after she moved and, until recently, no contact with their descendants. ......................... 1900 Grayson County, TEXAS, Justice Precinct 4 (West Part), p. 8B/165B, SD2, ED 108, #145/150 LAUGHLIN, Thomas_44 (June 1853)_MISSOURI/MISSOURI/TENNESSEE_Farmer Susan A. (Arminta "Mittie" WEBB) LAUGHLIN have been married 17 years. Seven children were born to them and 5 are living. The family lives on a rented farm and no one has been out of work. Mary A. and Ollie attended school 4 months this past year. All residents read, write and speak English except Joseph who is 4 years old. There is no known relationship between the servants, James BARTERWOOD and John HAMMONS, and the LAUGHLIN family. Both men are white and single. ............................. Now for the big clue! I have been using the census records to attempt to locate Elmer and Joe LAUGHLIN. The 1920 census blew my mind. Please note the bold name and information below. 1920 CENSUS: Twin Falls County, IDAHO, Twin Falls Precinct #6, page 11A/190, SD2, ED 250, #207/211 (Image 21) LAUGHLIN, Joe (Joseph Andrew)_25_TEXAS/MISSOURI/KENTUCKY_Farmer Annie (PROTHROE)_25_LOUISIANA/US/LOUISIANA Carol_4 years, 1month_IDAHO/TEXAS/LOUISIANA WEBB, Lawrence S._ 22_Cousin_TEXAS/KENTUCKY/OHIO_Farm laborer Joe A. (Andrew) and Annie PROTHROE LAUGHLIN live on a rented farm. Joe's father was born in MISSOURI and his mother in KENTUCKY. Joe, Annie and Lawrence can read, write and speak English. Joe is involved in general farming and works on his own account. Lawrence works as a farm laborer for Joe. Lawrence WEBB, age 22, single, born in TEXAS, is listed as a cousin. He is the son of John A. B. and Bertha WEBB. John A.B. WEBB was born in Wolfe County, KENTUCKY. His parents are Isham G. and Nancy DICKERSON WEBB, both born in VIRGINIA. Lawrence cannot be a first cousin since he is not the son of Henry and MARY DUNN WEBB's son John W. How Lawrence is related should provide information on the parents and siblings of Henry WEBB. Lawrence WEBB's parents/siblings have not been located in the 1920 census. In 1900 John and Bertha WEBB lived near Joe's parents, Thomas and Susan Arminta "Mittie" LAUGHLIN in Grayson County, TEXAS. 1900 Grayson County, TEXAS Lawrence S. WEBB, age 1, is listed on the 1900 Grayson County, TEXAS census in the household of John A. and Bertha WEBB, John A. WEBB, age 39, was born May 1861 in KENTUCKY. NOTE: This is not John W., the son of Henry and Mary DUNN WEBB. Both Susan Arminta “Mittie” WEBB LAUGHLIN and John A. WEBB live in the west part of Grayson County, TEXAS; LAUGHLIN at Justice Precinct 4 (West Part), p. 8B/165B, SD2, ED 108, #145/150 (Image 16) and WEBB at Justice Precinct 4 (West Part), p. 9B/166A, SD2, ED 108, #169/175 (Image 18). QUESTIONS AND ANALYSIS: How, when and why does Susan Arminta “Mittie” WEBB move to TEXAS? Her birth date is 24 May 1867 (death certificate) or 1866 (tombstone). No other family member has been located in Grayson County, TEXAS. She married Thomas G. LAUGHLIN on 26 November 1882 in Grayson County. She gives birth to Elmer LAUGHLIN on 12 August 1881 (death certificate and WWI draft registration). Her pregnancy would begin about November 1880. Where is she when she becomes pregnant? KENTUCKY or TEXAS? Is Thomas LAUGHLIN the father of Elmer? Who knows. Thomas LAUGHLIN was in Grayson County prior to 1880. To my knowledge, no one has discussed Elmer’s birth date and her marriage date with any of Elmer’s sons. I would love to get a DNA sample. So what do the clues suggest? I think a pregnant 13 year old Susan Arminta “Mittie” WEBB moved to Grayson County, TEXAS with her WEBB cousins, Nancy, widow of Isham WEBB, and her children sometime in 1881. I have been unable to locate any member of the Nancy/Isham WEBB household after 1880 other than John A. WEBB. Although Lawrence WEBB states that he is a veteran of WWI in the 1930 Ada County, IDAHO census, the WWI draft registrations do not identify him. Information on Lawrence S. WEBB is at the end of this analysis. How is Lawrence S. WEBB related to Susan Arminta “Mittie” WEBB, daughter of Henry WEBB and her son Joe LAUGHLIN? My guess is that Henry WEBB and Isham WEBB are either brothers or cousins. Thank you for taking the time to read my research on the Henry WEBB family. Any corrections, suggestions, clues, or ideas will be gratefully appreciated. Mary DUNN Ms. Sullivan, Perhaps I can be of some small assistance with your Webb family research: ---The records that reference Morgan County and Owsley County in your research almost certainly refer to areas that are now part of Wolfe County. Therefore, it appears that from about 1860 to near the time Henry is found in Powell County, he lived in what is now Wolfe County. ---In the earliest record, which clearly identifies Henry, the 1860 Owsley County location is now Southwestern Wolfe. ---In that census he is enumerated as "Harrison" which raises an interesting question about his name. Harrison is not a nickname and one that this particular census taker would not likely have confused with "Henry". William Henry Harrison, or a combination of the three names, is relatively common in early Kentucky. A "Henry" in my family defied identification until an older member of the family remembered it was "William Henry". ---A person who could be Henry's son, Samuel H. Webb, b. ca1872, died at Eastern State Hospital in Fayette County on December 28, 1912. His birth is listed as Lee County. I do not know the extent that data from the old hospital is available to the public, but he is buried on the Hospital grounds. ---Most importantly, the 1878 birth of Henry's son, Robert, lists Henry's birth county as Perry County. It is almost certain that Henry gave that information himself. ---North Carolina Webb families, such as Benjamin Webb, b.1770's, that lived in Perry County, were in Southeastern Kentucky in the early 1800's. Benjamin's son, Enoch, has a son Henry, b.1836, but he is not your Henry. The name's Rueben and Green are also found in the Webb's of Perry County. ---I know you realize that researching early Kentucky families requires a careful consideration of the creation of counties and their changing borders. The Webb families found in Perry County in the 1830's and 1840's (about the time of your Henry's birth ) found themselves in Letcher County when that County was formed. 1. [KYWOLFE] Henry WEBB m. Mary DUNN
    2. Hi Winston, Thanks again for trying to help me identify my Henry WEBB. The Henry WEBB I'm trying to identify was born about 1836 somewhere in KENTUCKY. His parents and siblings are unknown. He married Mary DUNN about 1855, probably in Morgan County. Their first child, John W. WEBB was born in Stillwater, Morgan County on 10 March 1856. Mary DUNN is the daughter of John and Elizabeth TAULBEE DUNN. Known children of Henry and Mary DUNN WEBB are: John W., Greenberry, Evaline, Sarah E., James, Susan Arminta (my ggrandmother), Reuben, Samuel H., Robert G, and Rosa. Mary DUNN WEBB died between 1880 and 1900. The 1900 census lists Henry WEBB in Powell County living next to his son Reuben. Hopefully, someone will recognize this family and help me break through my brickwall. Sue Sullivan _suesullivanokc@aol.com_ (mailto:suesullivanokc@aol.com)

    1. Re: [KYWOLFE] Alice [WEBB] CARSON & Evaline WEBB
    2. Hi Sue, My mother was a Fairchild, so I have researched this extensively, and I thought you may be interested in the following. However, it may be of no value, but it is all I have on this Henry Webb. Winston Ahnentafel Chart for CYNTHIA FAIRCHILD First Generation 1. CYNTHIA FAIRCHILD was born in 1835. CYNTHIA married HENRY C. WEBB on 22 Apr 1861 in Johnson Co., KY. Second Generation 2. LOWERY FAIRCHILD was born in 1810/1813 in VA/KY. He married RACHEL LEMASTER. 3. RACHEL LEMASTER was born about 1815 in VA. Appendix A - Notes 2. LOWERY FAIRCHILD Floyd Co Ky Tax List as of 4 Oct 1837: Lowery (Lowry) Farechilds: Only circumstances place Lowry here as son of Abiud. Lowry's birth would have occurred about 1813-1815, with the probable death of his mother shortly thereafter. With the father a widower in his early 50s and with several young children now in his care, it is likely the married daughters helped out. Hannah, age about 22, could have taken the baby to raise and given him the name of Lowry, her new husband's middle name, but retaining the surname of Fairchild. In the will of Hannah's husband, William Lowrie Reed, he states, "to my partner and companion Hannah Fairchilds and her son, Lowry Fairchilds," and goes on to name his five children by Hannah. This statement also suggests that Lowry might be a son of Hannah born out of wedlock. Lowry is on the 1837 Floyd County, KY, tax list. as a Floyd County deed, dated 22 Mar 1837, shows that he purchased 50 acres for $100.00 from Elias Davis. Lowry signed the minutes as clerk for the May, June and July meetings of the Union Church. He missed the September, October and December meetings so a committee visited him to see why he was absent as clerk. In January 1840 he attended the monthly meeting and divulged that his feelings were hurt by some unbecoming remarks by two women regarding his family. The Church sent a committee to see the women, and one of them was then excluded from the Church. In June 1841 Lowry and Rachel received letters of dismissal to another church. Lowry is on the 1840 Floyd County, KY, census near Abiud. Rachel appears on the 1850 Johnson County, KY, census as head of household. Correspondence with Lowry's descendants reveals that Lowry probably was in some kind of trouble and had deserted his family by 1850. Nothing more is known of him. 3. Another thing I have found with the Wolfe county courthouse fires and loss of information was the re-issuance of certificates around the war.  Some 16 year olds suddenly became 18 or older in order to sign up for the war (or marry one going off to war) so I am skeptical of certificates directly after Pearl without some backup information.  A lot of nicknames or "new" names went into the system at that point. 3. Dr. Rice, My focus wasn't on a senior or a junior. It was on one Swiger who was within all those Glenwoods that had been listed within the SSI Death listing. With the information one has, is all that one can go by; I wouldn't have any idea as to what Glenwood Swiger, Sr. might be that you would be speaking about, because Glenwood was the middle name of all those individuals whom I looked through...and still, all you give is the name Glenwood, which doesn't identify the specific person that you are referring....it's again, like using a nickname and not the given name with which the legal world (SSI Death Index) uses to identify the individual one would be looking for, thus, your information given won't find and be able to pinpoint the individual if one was looking for them. What I would ask you, what was this 'Glenwood's' first name and how did he fill out his SSI paperwork? And if this person hadn't/ didn't complete his legal paperwork with his whole legal name, and just used 'Glenwood', you won't have found any of that wonderful information that you already know and shared, from any of those papers/documents listed within the SSI Death Index either, because there won't have been enough information to know which Glenwood Swiger that you were observing at the time. 3. Not sure if you have access to Ancestry or not, but i can give you some info i found there as to census records. 1900 Campton, Wolfe Co., KY census: Campbell, William 47 ROSIE M. 19...says they have been married fo 2 yrs. with her having one child and NONE living now. William R. 16 Wiley F. 14 1910 Campton, Wolfe Co., KY Census: Campbell, William 57 Rosie May 30 says they have been married 12 yrs./ she having had 5 children/ only 3 living now GEORGE LEE 13 Nanie E. 5 Golden F. 2...daughter three years after the 1910 census, William Campbell passed away. 1920 Campton, Wolfe Co., KY census: Campbell, George L. 23 Ganette 23 Darley 5 Barney 3 1930 Franklin, Warren, OH: LYKINS, George 34 Jeannette 34 Darlie 15 Barney 13 Lidel 10 George 9 there is a WWI 1917/18 draft card registration saying that George Lee Campbell was born Dec. 6, 1896 in Wolfe co., KY and is age 21 at the time the card was filled out. Says he lives in Pilot, KY and his employer is listed as the White Brothers in Lexington KY. Lists his father's birth place as Perry Co., KY. wife shown as Jennette Campbell. i have no idea as to where George was being 'hidden' (?) in 1900...i asked to see EVERY CHILD born in 1895/96 & 97 listed in Wolfe Co., KY and nothing seems to come up that would explain WHERE he was when he was only 3 or 4 yrs. old and NOT with is mother. it has crossed my mind that maybe George Lee had been ADOPTED by the Campbells, as it looks as if they had only the 2 daughters??? and he possibly could have BEEN Born a LYKINS but used the Campbell name while he was living with them..or until he got older and wanted to use his birth name? i have also been unable to FIND the Spencers in 1900 - -Wm & Nancy both lived past 1920 [see www.findagrave.com and ask for Spencer cemetery in Wolfe Co., KY for exact birth/death dates] and yet i cannot locate them in 1900...i thought perhaps they may have had George. hope this helps a little bit....Charlotte ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dee Kay" <momhs2hs@yahoo.com> To: <kywolfe@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 01, 2010 2:37 PM Subject: [KYWOLFE] Just joined and am looking for some information Hello I am researching a few lines that originate, perhaps tangle is a better word, in Wolfe County. My great2grandparents were George Lee Lykins (as we knew him) and Jeanette Duff. Recently we have confirmed that he grew up in Wolfe county as George Lee Campbell. And more recently we have learned he may have been born George Lee Spencer. His mother was Rausey (as we knew her) Mae Spencer d/o William M. Spencer, Jr and Nancy Jane Johnson. Rausey is probably Rosa or Rossa Mae youngest of the family. Rausey later married a Racliff? is my understanding. Rausey married William Campbell and most of William Jr and Nancy Jane Spencer's children married into the other members of William's family creating a super Campbell-Spencer association at the beginning of the 1900's. My George Lee moved to Ohio (1920ish) and changed his name. Both Jeanette and George Lee later remarried. We thought that there are perhaps two Bibles with information BUT on consideration it may be the same one. One is a Wright/Chambers Bible and the other a Bible that shows the Spencers born in the county. The Spencer Bible could be a continuation of the Wright/Chambers or be something totally different. My uncle did see a Bible with Spencer births, deaths and marriages about 45 years ago in Wolfe County. Other information: Jeanette Duff is the daughter of John Logan Duff and Polly Garrison. I know several people who know much about them but would love to know more. William M. Spencer JR (He is not the Moses Spencer line but a cousin line to them) is fairly well documented by both the Spencer and Caudill researchers. Nancy Jane Johnson is probably the daughter of James Addison Johnson (I have two choices for his family - Benjamin and Willis) and Martha Wright (Elisha Wright and Ann Chambers). Both the Johnson and Wright families' information is thin (mostly Owsley county but they later moved away) and we are struggling to put the picture together. I noticed the Mitch Campbell and Rosaline Campbell reference of the other post. Any relation to William Campbell of Wolfe? What information am I scouting for? Spencer Bible? When these treasures are sent the list's way, on the hope that the individual is related, I always try to figure out if any of those individuals fit within my family. Here's what I was able to document/find and although this Day and this Nickell doesn't fit within my family tree, perhaps this information might assist someone else, especially on the account that genealogy is to be shared and since this is the fun of it, trying to find branches one doesn't know much or anything about, why would I want my effort and time to go down the drain and not benefit someone else!! Rhonda Warmack Houston (rfhouston@mindspring.com) Here's what information and connections I was able to find about Marigold (Nickell)Day Swigner's family. Kentucky Death Records, 1852-1953 about Elsie May Day Name: Elsie May Day [Elsie May Nickell] Death Date: 16 Jan 1934 Death Location: Wolfe Residence Location: Wolfe Age: 27 Gender: Female Ethnicity: White Birth Date: 3 Nov 1906 Birth Location: Lexie, Kentucky Spouse's name: David M Day Father's name: Hiram Nickell Father's Birth Location: Hazel Green, Pennsylvania Mother's name: Alice Carson Mother's Birth Location: Hazel Green, Pennsylvania Marigold's mother was only 27 yrs old when she passed away from spinal meningitis. Here's Elsie's husband, Marigold Swiger's father: Social Security Death Index about David M. Day Jr. Name: David M. Day Jr. SSN: 402-42-6093 Last Residence: 45005 Franklin, Warren, Ohio, United States of America Born: 17 Dec 1932 Died: 22 Jan 1991 State (Year) SSN issued: Kentucky (Before 1951) This has to have been Marigold Day Swiger's husband, Glenwood Sr. What I observed as I went through many of the Swiger's SSI records, is that the name Glenwood is carried through in most as the middle names, so perhaps the individual who wrote this obit, didn't know Marigold's husband's given name, and maybe because most called him Glenwood, that was considered his 'given' name in the obit. Interestingly, since it is the one who fills out the original SSI paperwork is the individual whose information we see what is referred to the Social Security Death Index, Roger was the only one who didn't write out completely, his middle name which he initialed in with a 'G'. The only other clue that was offered from all the Swiger's SSI dates to me, that this may infact be Marigold Day's husband, was the death date given of 1990, which belonged to only Roger G. Swiger who passed away in 1990. Social Security Death Index about Robert G. Swiger Name: Robert G.
