Bess I did a quick check this morning for hints to your search and found that Hardin was married to the first daughter of Rev. Jeremiah Lovelace. I then found this on the general search about the Lovelace family.... http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lovelace/us/states/ky/Breathitt_Co/ljw0001.Letter_from_Esther_Lovelace.txt It is mostly about the Lovelaces but might give you a place to start searching. Also Breathitt was formed from Clay, Estill, Perry counties in 1839 so information may be those other county archives. I have relatives that never moved from the old farm -- just changed county names. Some in the Ancestry trees are saying his father was Benjamin from Wilkes county NC. OK, Bess, This is the best I can do. If I knew where Hardin Smith spent the remaining part of his life, I might be able to research that area. I'm going from what I know as I look up Mary E. "Polly" Smith Swango's find a grave? This is what is on her grave: Birth: Feb. 25, 1845 Breathitt County,Kentucky, USA Death: Sep. 21, 1911 Wolfe County, Kentucky, USA Burial: Wilson and Swango Cemetery Wolfe County, Kentucky, USA Find A Grave Memorial# 16356000 Which tells me that since she was born in Breathitt County, KY, must have meant that Breathitt County would have been where her parents lived out their lives, which would be where you might continue your look for the Hardin Smith name.. >From what I've found out from others' research, was that there were at least three Smith families living in Buckhorn, Perry, Kentucky in the early 1820's and that most of their families lived their lives out in the Longs Creek, Breathitt, County, Kentucky area. All that is known from what I can find out, is that Hardin Smith had been born in 1825 and his wife's maiden name was Loveless which has already been conveyed by the previous poster. ============================================================================ ========================================== >From Ancestry.com's 'My Genetic Pool' family tree, which has Paul Gregory1959 as the owner has shared/given all of this information: Jeremiah Lovelace Birth 1796 in Wilkes, North Carolina, United States Death 29 Jul 1890 in Breathitt, Kentucky, United States Who married on 30 Jan 1816 in Wilkes, North Carolina Phoeba Lipps Birth 1796 in Wilkes, North Carolina, United States Death 1876 in Breathitt, Kentucky, And all their children (which some from his research may be the same person repeated twice) Betsy Lovelace 1820 - Elizabeth Lovelace 1820 - could this have been the Elizabeth noted below ?? Nancy Lovelace 1821 - 1902 James Lovelace 1824 - Sarah Sally Lovelace 1825 - Mary Polly Lovelace 1826 - Sally J Lovelace 1828 - Sarah J Lovelace 1828 - Ellen Lovelace 1830 - 1909 Paulina Lovelace 1832 - Ann Eliza Lovelace 1835 - Analiza Lovelace 1836 - Ann Elizabeth 1836 - James Columbus Lovelace 1838 - 1886 John H Lovelace 1841 - 1923 Apparently too, Mr. Gregory has learned/shared this information about Jeremiah Lovelace via those who shared oral history about Jeremiah which 'places some meat on an ancestor's bones' and tells us something about Jeremiah and what was going on in Breathitt County, Kentucky during the time an individual was living: "The Prophet" Jeremiah Lovelace , Breathitt Co. Kentucky Breathitt is the only county in the State which has the honor of producing a man who professed to be endowed with supernatural and divine power. He was known as Jeremiah, (Lovelace) the Prophet, and I was intimately acquainted with him. He professed that by laying on of his hands he could perform miracles-heal the sick, restore the blind to sight, relieve the most excruciating pain, and also walk upon water. To prove his claims he exhibited his divine power before an audience by treating several patients with great success, as testified by the statements of several subjects upon whom he operated. Many of those present at the exhibition believed in his divinity, but there were several "Doubting Thomases" present who were not and could not be convinced of his infallibility until they could see him walk upon the water. So, for that purpose he made an appointment to meet them near his residence below the mouth of Frozen creek, on the Kentucky, on an evening of the following week. In the meantime he procured three thick planks, ten feet long and about eighteen inches wide. Then he made three trestles and placed them in the river about nine feet apart and six inches below the surface of the water, and on these trestles he placed three planks, running them straight out in the river and the end of the first plank being near the water's edge on the ground and about eight inches below the surface. The boys of the neighborhood suspected the deception he was trying to play on the public, and when they investigated and found the planks, they removed the middle one without the Prophet's knowledge. At the time appointed a big crowd assembled to witness the performance. It was about dark, but the moon was shining brightly when the Prophet made his appearance, arrayed in a long white robe, and after offering up a short prayer he gave directions to the audience to sing a familiar hymn when he commenced walking on the water. He then started for the water, and about the time the audience had sung the last line of the first verse he reached the end of the first plank. On his next step he went overboard into the water, where he struggled for some time, his long robe being an obstacle to his swimming. He was about to drown when he called to his audience: "Brethren, save me or I perish!" A man in the crowd answered, "Can't give you any assistance-all dam'd fools like you ought to drown!" He finally got ashore, but was never known to walk on the water again. I was not present on this occasion, but afterwards did see the planks upon which it was said he walked Recollections of Breathitt By J. GREEN TRIMBLE Ninety-One Years of Age I'll try some more for you, but can't until I have an idea where it was that Hardin Smith, the son, spent the remain part of his life. I found Mary/Polly's death certificate thanks to help from our Wolfe Line Ad. Hardin's wife's name was Elizabeth and they had sons and daughters, as the Bible says. i would be interested in knowing Hardin Smith's parents. I found him in the Breathitt Co. census, 1850. I have 2 Smith lines. Can't find anything on them. I have a Swango book somewhere. If I can find it, I'll see what it says. Usually the female children were married within the family's home, so....I'll leave it open if you want some more assistance.
