    2. TEK 12/1991, pg 18, Jonas Campbell III, compiled by O. C. Helton, 1886 Hanes Road, Beavercreek, Oh 45432 [Copied by Winston Nickell]: Among the early surveys of land in Washington Co., Va, was one dated March 21, 1786 to James Campbell, Sr., for 365 acres lying on the waters of Martin's Creek in Powell Valley. James and Mary Campbell, Sr., never moved to Powell Valley, but continued to live a few miles below the lead mines which were located eight miles south of Fort Chiswell on New River. The Powell Valley land was settled by James Campbell, Jr. (b 1786, MD), who bought and sold other land on Martin's Creek and at his death (on March 10 1856), owned over 400 acres in that location. James Campbell, Jr., was twice married, first to Eliza and second to Eleanor Sims (b 1788 MD, d after 15 Nov 1854 in Hancock Co., Tn) the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Ewing) Sims, and the granddaughter of John Ewing, the Long Hunter. James and Eliza Campbell, Jr. had issue: Margaret; Mary m John Hamblin; Elizabeth m Hugh C. Pauly; James Campbell III m Milly Sally; Minerva; David C. m Ann Wirick; Ruth m David Cowan; Elisha Hobbs; Susannah m Elijah Clemens; Joseph; John m Catherine (?); and Matthew. James "Jonas" Campbell, III, was b 12 Feb 1826 on Martin Creek in Lee Co., Va. He married 25 Feb 1845 Milly Sally, the daughter of John and Nancy Sally. Milly Sally was the granddaughter of George Adam and Hannah Salling, the great granddaughter of John Peter "Sally" Salling, who settled 8 miles east of the Natural Bridge on the First Fork of the James River. He is perhaps the first settler of the Valley of Virginia. Dr. Joseph Waddell, in the Annuals of Augusta Co., Virginia, states on page 24 "We are satisfied that Mackey and Salling did explore the Valley, but that it was about year 1726, before there was any settlement by white people west of the Blue Ridge." About 1858, James Campbell III moved his family to the Southern part of Morgan County, Kentucky, which in 1860 became Wolfe County. Milly Sally Campbell died after 1880 and Elder James "Jonas" Campbell III, married his wife, Mary Barnard, on 4 Oct 1889. Jonas and Milly (Salley) Campbell arrived in what was then Morgan, later Wolfe County, about 1859. They had nine children, the first five born in Virginia, the remainder in KY. They were: 1. Emeline, 1849-?; 2. Nancy, 1851-?; 3. Diadema, 1854-?; 4. Willian N., 1856-?; 5. John H., 1858-?; 6. Elizabeth, 1860-?; 7. George S., 1862-?; 8. Greenberry L., 1864-?; 9. Jonas F., 1866-1941, married Eliza Jane Livesay (TKE Feb 2000, p 60). The East Kentuckian 12/1990, pp. 4-5: [Copied by Winston Nickell] James "Jonas" Campbell III was born Feb 12, 1826 on Martins Creek in Lee County, VA, and was married there Feb 25, 1845 to Milly Sally who was born Feb 19, 1825, to John and Nancy Sally (Salling). The moved to Morgan (Now Wolfe) County, Kentucky after the death of James Campbell, Jr., March 10, 1856, (at the age of 70 years). Their Children were: 1.
