Hi Bess, A couple questions. Who was your grandfather and is Van Cleve in Texas or Kentucky? My mother had a first cousin named William Carl and they usually called him Carl. He died a few years ago, and Mother went to his funeral or visitation. He lived up around Van Cleve and I believe he was a minister. I don't know who his father was. By the way, the George Faulkner who was my g-grandfather--his father's name was William. Hi Bess, Daisy Dunn married William Carl Faulkner, I believe he went by Carl. Daisy was the daughter of David Dunn and Lillie Mannin. Lillie and my grandmother Nannie were sisters. Do you have a William Carl in your line? Bess, I'm not sure that I am. I do remember seeing the name in my family tree, though. When I find out how they fit in, I'll let you know. The village of Pence, located about nine miles southeast of Campton, is named after him. It is said that Andrew came to Kentucky from Illinois and his ancestors came from Virginia or possibly North Carolina. The Illinois speculation, however, is unlikely, as there was little settlement there in the years prior to the time Andrew is known to be in Kentucky. Additionally, the census records consistently show him to have been born in Kentucky. The notion - found both in print and on line - that he was the son of Henry Pence (Jr.) of the "Hawksbill Pences" who settled on the creek of that name in what is today Page County, Virginia, is definitely not true. This Henry Pence moved to Champaign County, Ohio, about 1805 and died there in the 1830s leaving a will naming his children and there is no Andrew among them. Also, I have seen it stated in many places that Andrew Pence (b.1798 KY) is also know as Andrew Jackson Pence Sr.; I have been to The Old Pence Branch Cemetery (located on Pence Branch Rd., just outside Bethany, KY) on many occasions. His headstone does not record any middle name, let alone Jackson. Furthermore, since he was born before General Andrew Jackson came to fame, it is highly unlikely that Andrew Pence bore his name. Andrew Jackson Pence, at least in this line, was Andrew Pence and Rebecca Hollon's grandson, born Dec. 14, 1871 on Pence branch and he died 31 May 1900 on Pence Branch. He is also buried in the Old Pence Branch cemetery. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I would love any Pence pictures you would like to share I can send you some of Margaret and John, and their family if you would like them. If you are talking about the Pence Cemetery on Cave Branch (may be called the Jacob Pence Cem.), there is a Maloney Cemetery to the right and up the hill to that Pence Cemetery, in which I have a brother buried. I have many relatives from Wolfe County of which I have a pretty good family history. Fred Morris, Atlanta GA Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. These are my Pences: Judy Pence Helton > Samuel Odell Pence > Samuel Withrow Pence > Felix Pence > Andrew Pence. I am down at the Bethany Christina Mission Center and at Pence several times a year. We buried Grandpa there in 1994. I can probably tell you just about where everything is or was. No, Andrew didn't have a middle name. He was at one time a justice of the peace for Breathitt County during the feuds. I do have all of the Henry Pence info of the one from Champaign, just in case. Some have listed Andrew as a "love child" of Henry Pence. No one has come up with a better connection. Take care, J. Larry Helton, Jr. Famous last words: " Paddle faster, I hear banjo music..."
Hi, I just found a copy I had made when I went to Frankfort Ky last summer, of a divorce record. I've been hunting for my g-g-grandmother, Sally Hatton, b. 1831. She had children, William, Willis, Green [my g-grandfather] and Benjamin by Isom/Isham Brewer, but they were never married. I've been trying to find her parents. Here is the info I found, and am wondering if it could be mine. Estill Co. Ky Divorce Record: Hatton, Sally Ann vs William Hatton Divorce grandted 10 March 1843. She asked to have her maiden name, Sarah Ann Gosney, restored to her. Anyone have any further info on this? Richmond I have a picture of Molly Ratliff, d/o Andrew Jackson Ratliff and Sarah Crouch and she looks to be at least part Native American.
