One of us just may connect, ya never know.....Lois Well, for one thing, it would be off-topic for this Whitley County mailing list, since I don't know of any Whitley County or even Kentucky connection for them. Like I said before: >> Not as far as I know. The furthest back that I have reliable information on >> my Bennett line has them moving into Illinois in the mid 1830s. Before >> that, they are supposed to have been in Tennessee - but I don't have any >> solid info. Oh well, it isn't as if this list were just flooded with emails, anyway. Do any of y'all know of a connection between the Whitley County Bennett families and the family of John Bennett and Rachel Lynch? John Bennett was supposedly born about 1780 in North Carolina, but I have no documentation of this. According to 1850 census data, Rachel (Lynch) Bennett was born about 1781 in Virginia. The family was in Tennessee by 1808 when their son Isaac Bennett was born. John Bennett supposedly died about 1831. Isaac Bennett supposedly married Mary Duncan in White County, Tennessee, in 1834, but again I have not yet found any documentation. Isaac Bennett, his mother Rachel (Lynch) Bennett, and several of his brothers and their families migrated in the mid 1830s to McDonough and Hancock counties in Illinois. The family and their descendants mostly stayed in that general area for the next 100 years or so. Chuck Bennett

If anyone here has access to marriage books covering the mid-1800s in Whitley County, I would appreciate a lookup for the following marriages: Granville Perry Rose & Josephine Stevens/Stephens, probably about 1866-1867. (male) Stevens/Stephens & Nancy (surname unknown), probably about 1842-1843. (unknown male) & Nancy Stevens/Stephens between 1860 and 1870. Thanks, Chuck Bennett
I am trying to find a record of a man of surname Stevens or Stephens, given name possibly William, who died about 1849-1850 in or near Whitley County, Kentucky. I believe he was the husband of Nancy Stevens (maiden name unknown) and possibly the son of Michael Stevens of Whitley County, Kentucky. If you have any record of a man fitting this description, please let me know. Thanks, Chuck Bennett
I am trying to break through a long-existing brick wall on the family of my great-great-grandmother, Josephine (Stevens) Rose. She was married to my great-great-grandfather Granville Perry Rose in Whitley County, Kentucky, probably about 1866-1867 (in the 1900 census they said they'd been married for 33 years). I have quite a bit of info about his family background, and about their life after marriage, but about her family I know almost nothing. Her death certificate (with info provided by her son George L. Rose) states that her father's name was William Stevens and her mother's name unknown, and that she was born in Whitley County, Kentucky, on 21 February 1846. I've searched every Stevens/Stephens family in Whitley County in the 1850 and 1860 census, and none of the men named William have a daughter named Josephine or Josie or anything similar. However, I did find a Josephine Stevens of about the correct age living with a Nancy Stevens in both 1850 and 1860 - and she is the only girl of that name found in any of the Stevens/Stephens families in these census years. In 1850 they were living near the household of a Michael Stevens, and in 1860 in the same household. Given the ages shown, I wonder if Michael Stevens might have been the father of Nancy's husband, who perhaps had died just prior to the 1850 census (she had an infant at home, so presumably not too long before). Unfortunately, these census years do not tell us anything about the family relationships of the people listed, so these are all guesswork. Can anyone here provide further info about these people? Michael Stevens - age uncertain, shown as 67 in 1850 and 68 in 1860, not found in 1870 or 1880 - born in Tennessee, according to both 1850 and 1860 census - possibly had a son named William who died about 1849-1850 - possibly married to Dacy, listed with him in 1850 as age 57 Nancy Stevens (maiden name unknown) - possibly married to William Stevens - appears in/near household of Michael Stevens in 1850 and 1860 - born about 1826 - age shown as 24 in 1850 and 34 in 1860 - not found in 1870 or later - possibly died or remarried Josephine Stevens - born about 1846-1847 - married to Granville Perry Rose about 1866-1867 (per 1900 census) - possibly married first to someone named Sherline? - had M.B. Sherline (female age 5) living with them in 1870 Thank you for any help you can give. If needed, I can provide more info about the family of Granville & Josephine Rose after they left Whitley County.
