    1. [KYWHITLE] William Manning of Whitley Co., KY
    2. Steven C. Perkins
    3. Hello: I have been searching for a Nancy Morgan or Whitecotton as the wife of William Manning (1775-1867) of Whitley Co ., KY. I was just contacted by a newly found close multiple cousin, we both have a Perkins father and a Ball mother, who says his family believes William Manning was a son of Meredith Manning and an Elizabeth Whitecotton, supposedly a Cherokee. He also says his family has William Manning's first wife as Namcy Sims or Simms. Does any one recognize these names? I have previously been looking at the Reuben Mannings in VA, NC, and SC, as possible fathers of WIlliam. However, William did not have a son named Reuben, while he did have a son named Francis Meredith (Merida) Manning. There was a Meredith Manning in VA and one in SC or NC in the 1700s. Thanks, Steven C. Perkins SPerkins@interaccess.com Manning Y DNA study: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~scperkins/ManningDNA.html

    3. Betty; You wrote; <snip> I'm not sure how I can easily transfer my present data from Generations to new software and will appreciate any advice anyone can give me. <snip> Several years ago I bought "Family Tree Maker" (FTM) and still use it, but changes at Borland sent me on a search for a back-up system. From one of the lists I picked up a thread on genealogy software and discovered the wonders of "Personal Ancestral File" (PAF.) This program has a lot going for it, and some features which aren't available in any of the commercial products. The Church of Latter Day Saints developed and support PAF. The program is a free download from the LDS website as is the user manual in PDF. To make the exchange simply export your "Generations" data as a GEDCOM file and choose the option which outputs the largest amount of data to the file. The after installing PAF simply import the GEDCOM. I haven't tried this with my version of "Generations" so can't tell you what the downside might be. However, with FTM the notes and source data seem to get lost. The information is there, but PAF doesn't seem to link it to anything. I'm sure there is a way to get the data linked. It just hasn't been important enough to me to spend the time to find a solution, plus I tend to think that it's a FTM thing. After all the LDS developed the GEDCOM format, but not all commercial software implements their GEDCOM export in a uniform manner. Still it's the best option currently available. Just one of many solutions which I'm sure you'll receive. Sonny Vaughn

    2. I hope that someone can give me good advice as to what I should do regarding genealogical software. What genealogical software do you use? I have a problem now in that Sierra's Generations, which I've used for several years, has been sold and is no longer supported by the company. That, of course, means I'll need to change to something new. I had started with Reunion, which was sold to Generations, but it appears the Generations company is getting totally out of that business. I'm not sure how I can easily transfer my present data from Generations to new software and will appreciate any advice anyone can give me. Betty Neu
