Carole, Where in the world were these records? I saw several names that I recognized, one was one my Aunts, a sister of my mother. Where were they, and why were the birth delayed?? That is a great contribution for Webster Co. researchers Love you, Helen -----Original Message----- From: kywebste-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:kywebste-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Carole Palmer Sent: Friday, January 30, 2009 3:53 PM To: kywebste@rootsweb.com Subject: [KYWEBSTE] Webster County Delayed Birth Records Thanks to the efforts of Mary Patton, Suzanne Shephard and Jerry Brock, Webster County researchers have a great new resource - the county's Delayed Birth Records. Never heard of Delayed Birth Records? Join the crowd; lots of folks are in the dark about them. We have just put the ones for Webster County online at: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kywebste/delayed-births.htm <http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kywebste/delayed-births.htm> I have also quoted an explanation from Roseann Hogan's book "Kentucky Ancestry" to help us understand what Delayed Birth Records are all about. Thousands of Kentuckians have been without power for 3-4 days due to a terrible ice storm that began last Tuesday. Western Kentucky was particularly hard hit. Let's pray that temperatures moderate soon so the power companies can get on with the hard work of restoring power. Keep warm, folks. Helen, I'm delighted you've already found something helpful in the Delayed Birth Records. To me, the words "Delayed Birth Records" don't really describe the records very well. According to Roseann Hogan, this way of getting a birth record was for folks who were born BEFORE 1911 when KY started keeping birth records. Especially when Social Security came along in 1935, people needed a way of providing proof of their age, so evidently that's when the delayed records came into play. Again, according to Hogan, the delayed certificates were filed separately from other birth records. But the index was evidently available at the KY Historical Society and now it has been transcribed. Mary Hatton and Suzanne Shephard offered them last week to all the KYGenWeb counties that wanted them and said we were welcome to put them online. Jerry Brock was the one who figured out how to pull the various county records out so we could put them on our county web sites. We owe the three of them a big thank you. I hope everyone enjoys them as much as you are, Helen.
