Maynard, Iâ?Tve been trying to come up with something on your Smith line. I have found a little that you probably already have. I found Andrew J. Smith in 1870 -1880- 1910. Census: 08 January 1920, Eufala, McIntosh Co, OK William R. Smith age 50 KY Cora M. age 45 AL (They apparently had no children.) (Tax rolls show Cora was still living in Eufala in 1927. Both were apparently deceased by 1930.) Back to Andrew J. Smith. You say he was born in 1833 in Polk Co, TN. Polk was not created until 1839, thus he was born in what became Polk County. Parts of McMinn and Bradley counties were used to create Polk. They were both created in the early 1820â?Ts from old Cherokee Indian Lands. Iâ?Tve had a lot of experience researching in McMinn and Polk counties, and can tell you that in those early days the borders between counties and even states was not well defined. Polk is the extreme southeastern county in Tennessee. People that lived there can be found in the surrounding counties in both North Carolina and Georgia. Most of the earliest settlers of McMinn and Polk came from southwestern NC. When you said Andrewâ?Ts mother was named Sherrell, the first thing that came into my mind was Lincoln County, North Carolina, where a lot of my Cobbs came from. The name Sherrill was common as dirt there. I absolutely cannot positively identify Andrew on the 1860 census. He enlisted in July 1861 in McLean County, in Company F, 5th KY Infantry. I tried to use that as a clue. On both sides in the War Between the States, companies were recruited generally in a single community. Thus, it was quite common to find the entire male population of a town wiped out in a single battle. I find four men (inclusive) named Smith in Andrewâ?Ts Company F â?¦ Francis, Henry C., and Jonas. I checked the 1860 KY census index, looking for a county that had all four names of military age. No luck. Did he or his widow by chance apply for a pension for his military service? That might offer some clues. Iâ?Tm stumped for now. my e mail; _mwjsmith2@aol.com_ (mailto:mwjsmith2@aol.com) ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. I don't often forward material I receive but I thought this e-mail, posted yesterday by David Samuelson to the Archives mailing list, would be of interest to all of us. Carole ================================== Just got from Dick Eastman - [please circulate intact, please note that the Civil War pension as well as other military pension/bounty records are not microfilmed except for Revolutionary War, only the indexes were. - David Samuelsen] *Warning to all U.S. genealogists! *Two rules published in the Federal Register on Monday, February 26, 2007, relate to fees for reproductions of records at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). In the case of Civil War pension applications, the proposal is for a 338% increase! Page 8327 contains a proposed rule revising fees for reproductions to cover NARA's costs for providing copies. On page 8279 is an interim final rule removing fee schedule fees for the reproduction of records of other Federal agencies stored in NARA records centers. The proposals are written in the finest governmental "legalese" language. However, it is obvious that the proposal is to *INCREASE* all fees. No surprise there, right? Maynard, I would not assume that the Martha, age 62, born TN is A.J. Smith's mother, especially since you have conflicting information from his death certificate. It seems logical that she is his mother but it's possible she could be an aunt. As for the Martha D., age 24, from 1870 Henderson census, since she is not listed with the family in 1880, it's possible she married. You need to check area marriage records to see if that was the case. If you can find her marriage and married name, perhaps you will be able to obtain a death certificate for her also. Then you could compare her information with his. Is a cemetery listed on Andrew J. Smith's 1912 death certificate? I sympathize with your problem; my maiden name is Jones. I hope someone on this list will be able to give some suggestions for possible Tennessee research. Hi folks...I am about to come out of my post-Christmas slump and we have a couple of new things online for you to look at. Larry Williams has sent us some material about his Webster County Williams Family, including a great memoir of his grandfather, Robert Carlton "Carl" Williams. I think you'll enjoy reading it and seeing Larry's photos, which I have placed in our Webster County Families area: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kywebste/families/families.htm Also we have added several new photos to Lynn Cobb-Alvarez' collection in the Webster County Family Album. (As you may know, I have put adding photos to the album on hiatus for several more months but since Lynn's pages were, in effect, already built, it was easy to add these three new photos, so I did). These photos of the George Washington Crowley and Mary Virginia Mounts family are ones that many of you will be interested in. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cpalmer/album/alvarez/index.htm We continue to add new obituaries to the revamped Webster County Message Board every week, thanks to help from Jane Sellers McBroom and Marian Dunn. We are closing in on 16,000 messages on this board, about 3/4 of those being obituaries. This is a great resource for everyone, in particular those who are just starting their research in Webster County. Hugs, Carole Palmer Webster County KYGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~kywebste/
I'm sorry to report I learned this morning of the death of Lori Long Price, who was one of the first genealogy researchers I met when the Webster County KYGenWeb site went online in April 1996. Lori worked hard tracing her family's roots. She was a native of Owensboro but some of her ancestors had Webster County roots. Their surnames were Fraser, McClanahan, Osborn, Powell, Quinn, Thompson and Turpin. Some of you probably knew Lori or corresponded with her. She was always eager to share information. Lori was an enthusiastic researcher and had a great zest for life. Along with Ruth Anderson, Lori wrote a book about the history of Puyallup, Washington, where she and her husband have lived since 1963. You can read Lori Price's obituary online at: http://www.legacy.com/tribnet/DeathNotices.asp?Page=Lifestory&PersonId= 85912842 I will miss Lori; we learned to use the Internet together. Hi friends....I'm sure most of you don't like change; I don't either. That's a sign we're getting older, I think. At any rate, changes will happen whether or not we like it. The RootsWeb Message Boards have undergone some changes. These changes have been in the works since last spring and were finally released last week, during the busiest time of the year. The biggest change is that you are now *required to register* before posting a message to the Message Board. You can read all the messages you want to without registering, but if you want to respond to one of them (or write a new message/query of your own) you must register. On the positive side, registering does not cost anything and your e-mail address will be hidden from spammers because it is encrypted. Registering before posting will also keep the e-mail addresses on the board "fresher" and there will be fewer disappointments (like when you find a message posted that is pertinent to your research and your e-mail to the poster bounces - sheer frustration!) The "advanced search" feature of the board is virtually unchanged, thank goodness. In my opinion, that is a board's most useful feature, especially when one is nearing 16,000 messages, as the Webster County board is. To post a new message, choose the "Begin new thread" option. That is the #1 question folks have written to me about. Sometimes the simplest things confuse us the most. If the board is still beyond understanding to you, scroll to the bottom of the page and choose "Board FAQ" (frequently asked questions). I know, no one likes to read the manual but when the end result is so valuable, sometimes we have to bite the bullet and do it. Hi-- I am at a dead end trying to locate a death date on a Melissa Gibson-- wife of Beury Washington Eakins. I have dates of 1860-1936 for Melissa. Beury died in Pike CO., IN, at his son Harvey "Pete" Eakins's house and is buried in Springdale Cem in Webster. Death dates on BW are Apr 24, 1948. I contacted the Pike CO health dept thinking that Melissa and BW might have been living with their son when she died, but they have no record of a Melissa Eakins from 1935-1937. And I cannot find her death in the KY death records-- although it could be listed under a different spelling. There was an obit for BW, and I was wondering if there is an obit for Melissa somewhere. I think the two of them are buried in the same place. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks so much. My great grandfather was George Washington Neal. He was born 18 Dec 1892 in Hopkins Co., Ky and died 15 Dec 1961 in Marion Co. Indianapolis. His wife and my great grandmother was Pearl Winstead. They were married 22 Jul 1910. Pearl was born around 1894 in Webster Co. KY. She died sometime before 1930, because she is not with the family on the census in Indianapolis. I would like to find out where she is buried. I think she is buried at Oakley Home next to her parents. There is a Ethel Pearl Neal buried there and she died 1929. I would like to find out if this is my grand mother. George's father was William Martin Neal. He was born in TN on 25 Dec 1850 and died 30 Apr 1933 in Hopkins Co., KY. I cannot find out anything on William Martins parent's. My next deal end it on Alexander Carnal born 1837 in NC and died bef 29 Nov 1913. He was married to Ruth Ann Day born 2 May 1836 in Hopkins Co., Ky. and died 27 Nov 1913 in Hopkins Co., KY. Last but not least is Charles Henry Presley born 1824 TN. He married Sarah Hobgood on 15 Dec 1851. They are the parents of Rachel Frances Presley. I would appreciate any help on the Presley and Hobgood Families. Thank you, Sheri
