Sorry, I made an error on Vaughn given name who married Margaret R. Williams, 14 Nov 1879 Webster Co., KY. His given name was James Benjamin Vaughn bn 1858 Webster Co., KY. Brenda: Further to my earlier separate message. My Williams' were four brothers: My Thomas J. Williams bn Hopkins 1838, m. Mary Elizabeth Graddy granddaughter of Elisha & Clarissa Moore Graddy from early 1800 Hopkins Co.; Charles W. bn 1841; James B. Williams bn 1844, who married Mary Ann Pullam; Daniel H. bn 1845 who m. Nancy Caroline Canada. Along with Sister Martha Williams who married 1848 Mathew Harris, their daughter Mary R. "Susan" m. James L. Crowell and lived until 1891 Crittenden Co.,KY. These five were the children of Benjamin & Mahala Watson Williams. I am investigating the long-shot possibility just now that possibly Benjamin died during the Mexican War 1846, as he "disappeared" and was, according to court records, deceased in 1846. Boy, do I need more than the day that I was able to spend in Madisonville library in that area. Hopefully, we will get back soon and hit all of the libraries for several days each. We ended up staying in the Days Inn at Madisonville for two nights. By the way, the Days Inn really isn't bad. Great beds! They really seem to be trying to bring it up from what I was told was pretty bad. The first night, we had just driven through Clay and Providence about 3:30 and checked in, when we got the news that the tornados were surrounding the area. Yes, it was that Thursday night the 18th, I believe. You all provided some real excitement. The last trip we made to OK City to visit my Dad's Sister we had major tornados that touched down. AND, haven't had an earthquake here in a while. So. CA., of course, is burning up and we are always so upset about the many people who are losing their homes. But, people continue to build in areas where they are taking such chances with fire. Parts of our town are periodically evacuated. We try to be vigilant, but the dryness is everywhere. I just had to jump in, as, after a quick trip to Webster Co., discovered that my Margaret R. Williams bn 1863 Webster Co., married 1879 Benjamin R. Vaughn. Margaret was the daughter of Charles Washington & Jane Clayton Williams. Charles W. bn 1841 Hopkins Co., was the son of Benjamin bn 1810 KY and Mahala Watson bn 1810 KY Willliams. Suspect that Charles died toward the end of CW, as Jane then married her brother-in-law Mathew Harris. Margaret R. Williams Vaughn had a brother, Ben T. Williams enumerated with his mother Jenie Haris in 1880 Webster Co., KY census. Wild shot, but are these people familiar to anyone. Thanks, Nancy for sending this information. I have had word from Marian and Amy Dunn that several homes in the Ortiz area of Webster County, which is near Mt. Lebanon Church and cemetery, were badly damaged by the tornado last night. The church itself wasn't damaged; in fact, Marian said the Red Cross was going to set up at 1:00 this afternoon in the church. There was serious damage in Owensboro as well - at Brescia College and in the downtown area. So hold a good thought for our western Kentucky friends and relatives as they once again have suffered at the hands of Mother Nature. Carole Palmer Webster County KYGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~kywebste/
Yes, there was damage in Owensboro. The steeple from 3rd Baptist Church fell and is in the sanctuary were a meeting had been only five minutes before. There was damage at Brescia University, motel and others. As far as I know there were no deaths in Daviess County. Now back to Webster Co. Ortiz which is on highway 132 between Dixon and Sebree was hit hard. My aunts house has a lot of damage and they may total it out but I haven't heard yet. She also lost a garage and a trailer and her son's front porch was in the woods. No damage at Mt. Lebanon Church that I could see. On down the road there was a lot of damage including a cousin who lost his trailer and camper. The red cross was setting up at the church and was to open at 1:00. No one was hurt and as my cousin said sofas and furniture can be replaced but lives can not. No one was hurt there. Going down 56 from Daviess to Webster I saw buildings, etc in the fields or beside the road. I did not take photos as I was driving. The front page of The Messenger, Hopkins Counties main paper, screams "Tornadoes hit Hopkins, Webster. Scattered damage, 5 injuries reported." According to the paper, there were 2 tornadoes that hit Hopkins & Webster counties last night. About 8 pm, or thereabouts, my dau called and said a twister was heading directly toward us. I grabbed my puppy and we all loaded into my car. We have a block building near downtown Dawson so we headed for it. All of us almost drowned getting from the car to the door. The sirens were screaming and the wind and rain was terrible, to say nothing of the lightening. There was reports that a tornado was spotted on the ground in Dawson Springs but nothing is reported in the paper about it and other than lots of leaves blown off the trees and laying in the streets we see no sign of one. It is confirmed that one hit in Nortonville. The Ideal market lost its roof and 2 employees say they just made it into the cooler before the roof was torn off. Real scarey they said! The paper says there was only 1 injury reported to Hopkins County officials. The first tornado was reported in Clay in Webster Co near the intersection of Ky 109 and 270 west however this one was apparently a false report. At 5:05 pm Poole was pelted by 3/4 inch hail; at 5:52 pm Dixon saw nickel sized hail and at 7pm the storm had moved into Sebree causing structural damage. At 7:40 the unconfirmed report of the tornado in Dawson. A few minutes later more funnel clouds were spotted east of Sebree. At 8pm the tornado hit Nortonville with reports of structural damage and multiple injuries. On Buttermilk Rd in St Charles a phone pole fell on a mobile home, leveling the structure and damaging a nearby home. This is where the 1 injury, not life-threatening, occured. MSNBC this afternoon showed extensive damage in Owensboro in Daviess Co. as well as across Indiana and Illinois and Michigan. I think they said there were several deaths but I didn't catch where. Francis, The Eddings family married into my Vaughn, Dye and Pullam families. If you descend from any of those you just don't know how many people that still live there you are related to, including me. We my dad grew up in Wheatcroft and I was born in Clay. My mother was born in Diamond. My paternal grandmother was born in Blackford. We moved to Utah when I was in the 3rd grade but we went home in the summers. I attend church with my uncle when I go home and the pastor (Larry Williams) wanted to know who I was related to and we are cousins through the Vaughn family. His wife or sister in law owns or runs the cafe in Wheatcroft. There is a museum in Wheatcroft that was owned by Charlie Clark but he passed away a few years ago, check and see if his widow is alive and if you can get into the museum. It is next door to the cafe, they can tell you how to get a hold of someone to maybe let you in. They have the old Claysville Newspapers in the back room up on a high shelf on the right hand side of the room. Start looking through them. We scanned in my birth announcement in 1953 and my sister's in 1951 and had a great time reading them. Good luck and have a great time! I hope to be going home in May 2008 for the Sigler/Holeman Reunion. You might consider contacting the DAR Library in Washington to see if they have a copy of the book or not. If not you can donate it to them and it is tax deductible. Even better a chapter gets credit for donating books, contact your local DAR Chapter and let them do the work and see if DAR will accept it and the chapter pays the postage if they will accept it. You can go to the DAR Library Website and see if they already have a copy and give yours to someone else. The Genealogical Library of Western Kentucky University Museum(The Kentucky Building) does a good job of taking care of documents, and I am sure the Murray State University Library(Pogue Special Collections Library) does the same. Those would be two good places to donate Western Kentucky information. I have notice several people were going or planning to donate books and/or journals or their local LDS, library, or genealogical society. Here are a few tips, I found. Most societies, libraries and LDS centers will accept your donation, but you might want to check with their policies first to see if donations are welcomed at that particular location. I few places may not take books, have the book end up elsewhere, or the group may sell it to raise money. Remember it is your donation and gift to a society, library, and LDS center of your choice so therefore you should have the abilty to decide the future of the books and journals. Remember to count how many books you are donating because you can use them for tax purposes or to get something from them that you donated the books. I hope everyone find a great home for their genealogy collection Amy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carol Huff" <c-huff1@sbcglobal.net> To: <kywebste@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 09, 2007 9:41 PM Subject: Re: [KYWEBSTE] Research trip > Vera: I am in exactly your situation, in that I have collected so many > books and journals relating to W.KY; and, of course, many other Counties > and States. Carol, I was wondering if you "Huff's" are of Quaker ancestry? If so, that is one of my lines and there is lots of data on them. Janet ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
When we were in Webster/Henderson about 2-3 yrs. ago, we stayed at the Ramada Inn in Henderson. It was very nice and you could walk to an Applebee's next door (very nice after a LONG day of hunting ancestors). It is on the main highway going up to IN and south to Webster. Janet PS If you do research at the Webster Co. Court House be sure to get permission to go up to the attic. They have improved it and there are files on Wills that I don't think are anywhere else! Also, go to the genealogy room on the lower level just outside the County Clerks Office and down a short flight of steps. It was closed while we were there but they let us in anyway. It is FULL of books and journals. There I found the document which gave me the name of my (Indian) 3rd ggm! It was in an old Webster Co. KY Genealogy Journal. I had looked for years w/o finding anything. We stayed late and they let us, saying close and lock the door behind you. There was no need to worry as the Sheriff's office and the jail were just above us!!!! Enjoy, Janet ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Dang! I apologize for that! I neglected to change the address. It's late, I'm tired and I should have went to bed an hour ago! I also don't like those posts on the list (they aren't supposed to be there and I goofed. Hope everybody will forgive me for my faux pas!) Tina Hall
