He warmly espoused the South- ern cause and took a prominent role in their secession movement as well. General Duke soon enlisted as a private in the Lexing- ton Rifles. He was then elected their 2nd lieutenant. 2nd Lieutenant Duke was with the Rifles when they were placed with the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry.
