The Confederates had worked hard to keep Kentucky within their fold. They spent considerable time in monitoring federal troop movements and sent General Braxton Bragg to repel these invaders in 1862. On October 8th, 1862 the Southerners encounter union troops at Perryville. A battle ensues which leaves neither army in control. General Braxton Bragg's forces fought hard against General Buell's units to no avail. Later that evening Bragg is compelled to move southward. The casualties for the Battle of Perryville is considerable for such an insignificant engagement. Federals report 845 men are killed, 2851 are wounded with 515 troops missing in this fight. Confederate losses were 510 men killed, with 2635 wounded, and 251 missing out of a total troop strength of 16,000.
