Grant states that the men and officers shall be disqualified from ever taking up arms against the fovernment of the United States until they've been properly exchanged. Athough his Confederate staff is divided on this question, Gene- ral Lee decides to turn down the idea of a southern surrender on the 8th of April. He justifies this as their only option for the time being. As the evening begins to fall, General Lee has began to move for trying to break through the union line at Appomattox Courthouse.
