Ruth, Where is Gossett? I doubt that this is it, since my guy's service papers give Gossen, Gossum, Gossom and also Glasgow as place of enlistment. Deb, I didn't get anything from the KY place names USGS site you sent. Off the top of my head, I don't think that a soldier would be listed as cavalry in this unit, unless he was a new recruit after the unit was mounted in the fall of 1864. The first Brigade is one of the best documented units that fought in the west and south. Ed Porter Thompson, who was with the unit from the beginning, was wounded and couldn't fight, but began serving with the quartermaster corps, and started collecting information from soldiers, and hanging on to records as the war came to a close. He wrote a 1000 page book that was published in 1868. It was revised about 1898. I got this through interlibrary loan. It is also available throught Heritage Quest, which I have home access to through my local library. There is also a shorter work by William C. Davis: "The Orphan Brigade, the Confederates Who Couldn't Go Home." Other books about this group include "Diary of a Confederate Soldier" by John S. Jackman who served in the 2nd KY Infantry Regiment, First Brigade, and "Johnny Green of the Orphan Brigade, the Journal of a Confederate Soldier". Johnny Green served with the First Brigade also, I can't find the Regiment just now. I also got his service records and his pensiion application. I have a picture of the canteen that he carried all through the war. I just checked your Caleb Adams - doesn't look like he was connected with the 6th Reg, Mtd. Infantry. 6th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry 6th Cavalry Regiment was organized during the summer of 1862 with men from the central and eastern section of Kentucky. It was mustered into Confederate service in September. For a time the unit skirmished in Kentucky attached to Buford's Brigade, then it fought with J.H. Morgan. Most of its members were captured at Buffington Island on July 19 and the remaining part at New Lisbon on July 26, 1863. The regiment was not reorganized. Its commanders were Colonel J. Warren Grigsby, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas W. Napier, and Major William G. Bullitt. I've been working on my soldier ancestors since last fall, and I found much more information on this one than any of the others. I know the cemetery where he and his wife are buried, and have been trying to figure out exactly where he is buried, so I can have a CSA monument put up.
