General Robert E. Lee after thoroughly considering his leadership ability and his own limitations, offers his resignation to President Jefferson Davis. This enormously grave decision on August 8th, 1863, was one that could have brought thorough division and consternation among the armies of the Confederate States of America. Lee had seemed dejected and in ill health following Gettysburg. He could not have been more serious with his offer than any other decision he had ever made in his military career. President Davis reads this offer and refuses his request by writing, "our country could not bear to lose you."
