SOUTHERNERS FIGHT THE ENEMY AT ATHENS FEBRUARY TWENTY-THIRD 1863 The early weeks of 1863, found southerners fighting to eliminate the federal threat to the Mississippi River. It would take units with determination who would be able to devise methods of engag- ing the enemy and driving them back from where they'd come. On the 23rd of February Confederate soldiers at Athens, Kentucky engage a group of northerners who are part of the union campaign to take over the Mississippi. The day is filled with skirmishing in and around Athens, with virtually nothing being accomplished. SHARING ONE CONFEDERATE HISTORICAL FACT OR TRIVIA ITEM EVERY DAY Can anybody give some additional details about thes battle. I am unable to locate anything else about it.
