Brown, the widow of Elias Brown. It shows his service to be in G 55 Ky Mtd Inf. Best I can tell, this is Company G 55th Regiment Kentucky Infantry which seem to be a Union outfit. There was indeed a Corporal Elias Brown in this unit. In 1862, Elias had joined Company C, 41st Alabama Infantry Regiment, and his Confederate file record shows " he was lost in the retreat from Knoxville on Dec 4, 1863". I am considering the possibility that he was captured during the retreat from Knoxville and that he took 'the oath of allegiance's and was conscripted into the Union army as a corporal. Family lore says nothing about his service in the Union army, but I guess back then one did not return to Alabama bragging about service in the Union army. Otherwise, reckon this is a different Elias Brown in the Ky Regiment (tho I am pretty sure it is his wife) and this was an early case of Identity Theft? :o)) Any comments would be appreciated.
