The Confederates had worked hard to keep Kentucky within their fold. They spent considerable time in monitoring federal troop movements and sent General Braxton Bragg to repel these invaders in 1862. On October 8th, 1862 the Southerners encounter union troops at Perryville. A battle ensues which leaves neither army in control. General Braxton Bragg's forces fought hard against General Buell's units to no avail. Later that evening Bragg is compelled to move southward. The casualties for the Battle of Perryville is considerable for such an insignificant engagement. Federals report 845 men are killed, 2851 are wounded with 515 troops missing in this fight. Confederate losses were 510 men killed, with 2635 wounded, and 251 missing out of a total troop strength of 16,000. Adam Johnson was a 28 year old army scout who sided with the Confederacy Johnson was sent to Kentucky by General John C Breckinridge in May of 1862. He made it a point of recruiting men for a series of successful raids on the yankees. With only a few recruits, he started leading daring attacks on the outposts held by the north. These exploits began attracting others who were for the Confederacy. One raid at Newburgh, Indiana, yielded them enough supplies for weeks. Johnson bluffed his way past the guards with two "cannon" made of a log and a stovepipe. This action earned him the nickname "Stovepipe." This 300 man battalion, "The Breckinridge Guards" raided through out the western regions of Kentucky in the summer of 1862. By October they were incorporated into General John Hunt Morgan's cavalry unit. NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN ONE CONFEDERATE HISTORICAL FACT OR A TRIVIA ITEM EVERY DAY! There were alarming arrangemnts being made at virtually every level to draw these states into their fold. On September 3rd, 1861 there is a military move in Kentucky which presses their alignment even further than they'd ima- gined. Confederate General Leonidas Polk orders confederate troops into the state of Kentucky. He'd wanted to maintain southern positions within their boundaries. These troops are under the command of General Gideon Pillow This logistical move effectively terminates Kentucky's neu- tral status in the War for Southern Independence. LEE OFERS RESIGNATION =AUGUST EIGHTH 1863 NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN In probably one of the more serious moments of this War for Southern Independence, the solidarity for the southern army is held in balance. General Robert E. Lee after thoroughly considering his leadership ability and his own limitations, offers his resignation to President Jefferson Davis. This enormously grave decision on August 8th, 1863, was one that could have brought thorough division and consternation among the armies of the Confederate States of America. Lee had seemed dejected and in ill health following Gettysburg. He could not have been more serious with his offer than any other decision he had ever made in his military career. President Davis reads this offer and refuses his request by writing, "our country could not bear to lose you." Hi Everyone, The URL that Josie listed below is part of my Kentucky in the Civil War Website at http://www.geocities.com/civil_war_in_ky I am not the person to be writing to for your view and opinions of the monument that will be dedicated at the Vicksburg National Military Park in Vicksburg in October. I have nothing to do with the design or erecting of the Kentucky Monument. If you feel a need to write and protest, please write to Governor Patton or a Kentucky Representative. I'm sure they would love to hear your comments. Hello, we have got to voice objections to this monument - no way should lincoln statue be on this hollowed ground and no way would Jeff Davis want to usurp the honor due these soldiers. Can you all please write, write, write whoever and try to stop it before Oct 2001. These two together on this monument is a lie and a disgrace. I am just about sure we folks are paying for this with our overtaxed dollars, and we didn't have a say in it. http://www.geocities.com/civil_war_in_ky/ky-monument.html My ancestors came to Charleston in 1730 to get away from the kingdom, to live in peace to practice whatever religion they wished, to spend their money, their time away from the demands of fiefdom. They got doublecrossed by the Northern politicians and we have been second class citizens of their great empire ever since. Reading the Vicksburg, MS seige today, it was brought home to me how bravely and courageously our people tried to stop the invaders - the odds were tremendous - 10,000 at Champion Hill against our 3,000. 20,000 union troops marching through Mississippi - our land - our state - claiming Jackson, then turning towards Vicksburg from the rear while their gunboats were blasting away at the front - yet our brave people held out for 63 days. Some say If our general Pemberton had not wanted to make a show on the 4th of July with his kinsman, that horrid cruel union general Butler we might still have beat them back. Now today i also discovered there is going to be new monument unveiled there in October 2001, the last monument that will ever be placed on this hollow ground. If you go to this site you will see what it is going to be - The Kentucky Monument with Jefferson Davis & Abraham Lincoln about to shake hands - what an abomination - what a lie - Abraham never never offered his hand to the South. The South did offer their hand as in you go your way and I'll go mine. http://www.geocities.com/civil_war_in_ky/ky-monument.html No sir - this was a war about MONEY - in Lincoln's own words "The state of Kentucky was so important to the Union that President Abraham Lincoln stated, "I hope to have God on my side, but I must have Kentucky." With both its citizens and politicians divided on what course they should follow, Kentucky, being a border state, attempted to remain neutral, but was unsuccessful because of its strategic location and the divided loyalties among its citizens. Farmers, who used the Ohio and Mississippi rivers for transporting their produce, wanted access to both waterways and the international port of New Orleans. If the South separated itself from the North, this free access would be impeded. On the other hand, influential plantation owners and state rights advocates sided with the Confederacy. As a result, Kentuckians can be found in both Union and Confederate armies. Josephine Lindsay Bass Confederate Southron American 216 Beach Park Lane Cape Canaveral, FL 32920
