Could you possibly be in search of Goshen, Ky which is very near Louisville? Goshen is to the north-east on 42. The zip code there is 40026. Glasgow is in the in the southern part of the state to the east of Bowling Green. Best of luck with your hunt! Ruth, Where is Gossett? I doubt that this is it, since my guy's service papers give Gossen, Gossum, Gossom and also Glasgow as place of enlistment. Deb, I didn't get anything from the KY place names USGS site you sent. Off the top of my head, I don't think that a soldier would be listed as cavalry in this unit, unless he was a new recruit after the unit was mounted in the fall of 1864. The first Brigade is one of the best documented units that fought in the west and south. Ed Porter Thompson, who was with the unit from the beginning, was wounded and couldn't fight, but began serving with the quartermaster corps, and started collecting information from soldiers, and hanging on to records as the war came to a close. He wrote a 1000 page book that was published in 1868. It was revised about 1898. I got this through interlibrary loan. It is also available throught Heritage Quest, which I have home access to through my local library. There is also a shorter work by William C. Davis: "The Orphan Brigade, the Confederates Who Couldn't Go Home." Other books about this group include "Diary of a Confederate Soldier" by John S. Jackman who served in the 2nd KY Infantry Regiment, First Brigade, and "Johnny Green of the Orphan Brigade, the Journal of a Confederate Soldier". Johnny Green served with the First Brigade also, I can't find the Regiment just now. I also got his service records and his pensiion application. I have a picture of the canteen that he carried all through the war. I just checked your Caleb Adams - doesn't look like he was connected with the 6th Reg, Mtd. Infantry. 6th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry 6th Cavalry Regiment was organized during the summer of 1862 with men from the central and eastern section of Kentucky. It was mustered into Confederate service in September. For a time the unit skirmished in Kentucky attached to Buford's Brigade, then it fought with J.H. Morgan. Most of its members were captured at Buffington Island on July 19 and the remaining part at New Lisbon on July 26, 1863. The regiment was not reorganized. Its commanders were Colonel J. Warren Grigsby, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas W. Napier, and Major William G. Bullitt. I've been working on my soldier ancestors since last fall, and I found much more information on this one than any of the others. I know the cemetery where he and his wife are buried, and have been trying to figure out exactly where he is buried, so I can have a CSA monument put up. Most of this post isn't applicable to her soldier, but I'll send it on anyway. Thanks for all your suggestions! My ancestor enlisted at Gossum, Gossom, Gosson, also stated to have enlisted at Glasgow KY. He enlisted in the Confederate Army on 6 January 1862. He was living six miles south of Glasgow KY at that time, and served in Company D of the 6th Kentucky Infantry Regiment, First Kentucky Brigade. He was John Hardin Baker Adams, born 4 Oct 1843, Glasgow KY, and died 3 Feb, 1916 in Whitesboro, Grayson Co TX, buried in Vaughan Cemetery, Hill Co TX. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks, Laverne Counts Bornschlegel
There are two websites that feature tons of civil war info and photos - photos of Kentucky civil war soldiers, Kentucky civil war generals, grave sites of Kentucky soldiers, battle summaries and profiles of local soldiers. One is for Robertson County, Ky and the other is Nicholas County's website. Marilyn -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bob Kelly Sent: Saturday, May 26, 2007 2:20 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [KYWBTSVETS] 55Th KY Infantry Regiment I find a pension application record from Ellen E. Brown, the widow of Elias Brown. It shows his service to be in G 55 Ky Mtd Inf. Best I can tell, this is Company G 55th Regiment Kentucky Infantry which seem to be a Union outfit. There was indeed a Corporal Elias Brown in this unit. In 1862, Elias had joined Company C, 41st Alabama Infantry Regiment, and his Confederate file record shows " he was lost in the retreat from Knoxville on Dec 4, 1863". I am considering the possibility that he was captured during the retreat from Knoxville and that he took 'the oath of allegiance's and was conscripted into the Union army as a corporal. Family lore says nothing about his service in the Union army, but I guess back then one did not return to Alabama bragging about service in the Union army. Otherwise, reckon this is a different Elias Brown in the Ky Regiment (tho I am pretty sure it is his wife) and this was an early case of Identity Theft? :o)) Any comments would be appreciated. Time for Hands-On Preservation with Park Day 2007 The Civil War Preservation Trust and the History Channel are once again sponsoring our 11th Annual Park Day! On Saturday, April 7, 2007, volunteers throughout the country will work together to clean and repair the grounds at over 100 Civil War sites. Last year, approximately 4,000 volunteers played a vital role in sustaining these parks, providing more than 12,000 hours of service. Helping hands are needed everywhere for a wide variety of short and long term projects, providing interesting and rewarding volunteer opportunities for individuals, couples, schools, families, corporations, citizen groups and service organizations. Clubs and organizations can help with specific park improvements: trail renovation, tree planting, stream restoration, litter cleanup, minor repairs and more. The event is also perfect for Scout troop service projects or corporate team-building efforts. Without the help of volunteers, trash accumulates in these natural areas, harming wildlife, polluting lakes and rivers, and detracting from the beauty of your community. This event is a fun and effective way to improve the natural environment in your local community. Thanks to your donated time and skills, your favorite state park can see improvements now instead of sometime in the future. At each site, volunteers will get a free t-shirt and have the opportunity to hear historians tell them about the land they are helping to preserve. Plan to join fellow preservationists on Saturday, April 7, 2007 at a site near you for a day of history and hard work. Civilwar.org Cut and paste the url above for contact info for your state. Click on "Park Day" on the right hand side of the webpage Then scroll down to the bottom and click on the link to take you to the info for each state. If anyone has a problem please let me know and I'll send you the direct link and assist you as much as possible. ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. SOUTHERNERS FIGHT THE ENEMY AT ATHENS FEBRUARY TWENTY-THIRD 1863 The early weeks of 1863, found southerners fighting to eliminate the federal threat to the Mississippi River. It would take units with determination who would be able to devise methods of engag- ing the enemy and driving them back from where they'd come. On the 23rd of February Confederate soldiers at Athens, Kentucky engage a group of northerners who are part of the union campaign to take over the Mississippi. The day is filled with skirmishing in and around Athens, with virtually nothing being accomplished. Hi Listers, Just a brief update on the DNA study. We now have 87 members in the group, from the US, Canada, Ireland, Scotland, England, Australia, New Zealand, and Barbados. The study has revealed interesting connections for many of us - and an interesting lack of connections for many of us. Some of the matches the study has made are across continents and we have cross-matched with other surnames. Our Fitzpatrick group also includes the names Patrick, Shera, Sheridan, Moore, Stanley and Gray, all having some connection (whether historically or genetically) to the name Fitzpatrick. One Fitzpatrick in Australia was able to prove her link with the Fitzpatricks from Co. Laois and also to find her ancestry listed in Steve and Ronan's book, Bryan Lord and First Baron of Upper Ossory - proving her family line both genetically and on paper. We are actively seeking new Fitzpatricks to participate. We especially need Fitzpatricks who know where their family came from in Ireland, so that the rest of us can find our roots in the Old Country. We are especially interested in African American Fitzpatricks. We have only one Fitzpatrick from Scotland - we would like more. To Participate, you must be a male, descended along the exclusively male line of Fitzpatricks (no women allowed), or you must have one to represent you. The cost for the basic test is $155, and for the advanced test, $195. Even if this is steep for you, please contact us anyway. From time to time, some of our members have sponsored Fitzpatricks who otherwise would not have been able to participate. You might also consider sharing the cost of a test with other relatives, as one person can represent the whole family. I have updated our DNA website to reflect recent developments. See http://www.genealogy.com/genealogy/users/f/i/t/Colleen-Fitzpatrick-CA/index.html If you'd like more info or you'd like to partcipate, please contact me at [email protected] Colleen ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL. I have him listed in my index - Original source National Archives, but I do not have his service record. I expect you will have to contact the KY State Archives. Aside from my book, The Historical Sketch and Roster of the KY 5th Mounted Infantry Regiment, I do not know of any book on this regiment.
