XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX PRESIDENT DAVIS APPROVES JOHNSTONS AGREEMENT APRIL 24, 1865 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Earlier in April 1865, Generals Johnston and Sherman worked out a broad based political peace plan which if approved in time, whould end the hostilities between the two enemies. On April 24th 1865, President Davis had finished going over the proposals and sends his reply to General Johnston. They were both unaware of the federal response which would bring a completely different reply. President Davis had been holdin onto hope that the struggle might be allowed to continue. He had told his wife, Varina that he thought a return to the union will definitely bring oppression to the south. =========================================================== HERE'S A CONFEDERATE HISTORICAL FACT OR TRIVIA ITEM FOR YOU =========================================================== XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX 88888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

He graduated from West Point with his 18449 class. General Charles William Fields was initially appointed the colonel for the 6th Virginia Cavalry. Colonel Field was later commissioned brigadier general to rank from March 9th, 1862 and transferred to infan- try service. General Field led his brigade in the Seven Days Battle the Cedar Mountain Battle, and Second Manassas Battle. 2. Paul & Fredreica Speyer
    3. My husband's GG-Grandfather, Henry Speyer (sometimes spelled Speier), served Kentucky, was commissioned as Captain, D Company, 23rd Infantry Regiment. He resigned on 08 June 1862 [Source: Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Kentucky (Published by Harney, 1866)] . Also, according to "Union Regiments of Kentucky," he was captain of Company D. The above information was provided me by a friend. Is anyone familiar with this regiment? I have requested his "complete" file from NARA, but I'd love to know about his war history. I would especially LOVE to know where this unit enlisted and/or mustered out from. Family stories say that he was with the 23rd Volunteer Infantry from Indiana (this unit joined with a unit out of Paducah, KY), but as you can see, this was incorrect. His sons were born in Kentucky, but I have no idea where!?! If I knew where his unit was from, that might give me a clue to which census records in which counties to search. Ancestry.com has his pension record as serving with Kentucky, but his widow as applying for benefits in Indiana. He was a member of the GAR post 489 out of Culver, Marshall County, IN. Thanks so much for any geography/genealogy information anyone can help me out on! Fredreica [email protected] Fredreica

Former Confederate politicians and military leaders are now in a position to give their blessing or stop the resistance once and for all. On April 20th of 1865, General Robert E Lee feels compelled to give his opinion. He writes Confederate President Davis and comments on his opposition to furthering their conflict He fully resists the desire by many to continue hostilities through guerilla warfare. General Lee recommends an end to all fighting. Up to this time, President Davis believed that the partisan warfare would be the second stage of Confederate resistance to the union.
