Don't we all wish for the 1890 census! -----Original Message----- From: kywayne-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:kywayne-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Anna L Bertram Sent: Thursday, April 23, 2009 8:56 AM To: kywayne@rootsweb.com Subject: [KYWAYNE] BROWN - Brick Wall Hello Friends! The list has been quiet lately so I thought it might be a good time to post one of my "Brick Walls". Michael BROWN and Elizabeth SHELTON of Clinton Co., KY had ten children, one of whom was a son by the name of Elijah BROWN, born about 1843. Clinton Co., KY is next to Wayne Co., KY, where Elijah lived with his wife, Jane BERTRAM BROWN, daughter of Rev. Jonathan BERTRAM and his wife, Pharaba ADKINS. The young couple had seven children, including a daughter named Nancy Elizabeth BROWN, born about December 1872 in Wayne Co., Kentucky. She was called "Lizzie". Lizzie appeared last on the 1880 census in her father's household as Nancy E., age 8, daughter. 1880 Wayne Co., Kentucky Census (108th Enumeration District.): #149-151; BROWN, Elijah, 35, husband, farmer, TN, TN, TN; Jane, 33, wife, KY, KY, KY; Feriby E., 10, daughter; Nancy E., 8, dau; George W., 6, son; General M, 4, son, William F., 2, son. (Next door to Jane's parents.) I want to know whom Lizzie married and what happened to her after the 1880 census. If anyone knows the answer or has a clue, please share it with me. Thank you! I have a Shelton wall that we can trace to Wayne Co., Ky. My gr-gr-grandfather, Marion Shelton, is buried here in the St. Louis area, alongside his wife, Martha. They came here from Wayne County (Monticello) in a covered wagon with a family group, including my gr-grandmother, their daughter, Myrtle Shelton, who was maybe 8 at the time. some in the family group included cousins on Myrtle's side last name of Matthews. I have gravestone photos on Marion & Myrtle Shelton, if anyone is interested in that. Just took them before Easter. My mother and I have done quite a bit research, but we have never been able to find a trail going back on Marion Shelton. He was a farmer and laboror, anything to feed and shelter his family. I believe mom has some info going back on Martha, but I don't have access to her records while I'm typing this. She'd be willing to copy them and share, if any of this sounds like it relates to your family. Myrtle never learned to read or write, never went to school, didn't care about family history, and she passed away in the mid-1970s here in the St. Louis area. She married and left a large extended family who have somewhat scattered out from St. Louis, with whom we will not lose touch!!!! I have the last quilt she made, as well as some of her very simple, but very yummy "res-SEEPS" (recipes) that I had to follow her around the kitchen to learn, since she didn't work from written info, didn't write anything down.
