Patti, Ok, you've got my attention. I've been puzzling over a Lincoln County Treasury Warrant for quite some time--Could this be your William Barnett? Entry #: 1301 Date: 7/17/1781 Book: 1 Page: 146 Name: Barnett, William Assignee of #1: Stewart, William Assignee of #2: Clark, Thomas Acres: 900 Type of WT: Treasury WT #1: 5808 WT #2: 2984 Watercourse: Paint Lick Creek Surveyed\Amended\Withdrawn: W Beginning at the mouth of Paint Lick Creek running an east course on both side of the creek to include the upper Salt Lick. My Samuel Clark b. 1775 (who settled on Otter Creek and whose children Jesse & Elizabeth married two children of William Bell Sr from Randolph Co NC) came with his father Thomas Clark b. ca. 1755 from the Paint Lick Creek area of Madison Co (present day Garrard Co) to Pulaski Co about 1798 when it was still a part of Lincoln Co. All the Clark families who settled on the Paint Lick Creek watercourse appear to be related. DNA testing confirms that my Thomas > Samuel Clark line is related to the Orange Co NC Clarks who migrated to Madison Co in 1787. I have not been able to determine where my Thomas Clark came from and when he arrived in Madison County--I do have some theories I won't get into here--but I can tell you that John & Elinor Clark sold their property in Randolph Co NC on 19 Jan 1786 and came with Elinor's sister Catherine & her husband to Madison Co. They were polled in Madison Co in 1787. A third sister Sarah Clark married Thomas Clark of Randolph Co NC, a son of Samuel Clark who died in RC in 1783. This family appears to have been at the very least acquainted with the Randolph Co Bells, per court records. For example: 1779 Jun 13 - Wednesday - Randolph Co, NC - Minutes Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions (1779-1782) Jurors: Edward Sharp, JOHN CLARK, SAMUEL CLARK, Lewis Ashleman, William C..., Wm. Gope, Lewis Morgan, John Brown, WILLIAM BELL, JOHN VICKORY, Edward Thornburgh, Marmaduke Vickory, SAMUEL CLARK JUNR., THOMAS CLARK & Samuel Thompson or any 12 lay off the road from the Cross Roads to BELLS MILL & from thence the best & convenient way to GUILFORD Co, line going by Mendon Halls Mill and that they make report to next court. (Note that John Vickory was the father of Francis Vickery who migrated to Wayne Co KY in 1807.) Anyway, my Thomas Clark who was in Madison Co also had a son named Stewart, which has led to speculation that there was some kind of connection to a family with the Stewart surname. For that reason, this Treasury Warrant has been intriguing, but the Thomas Clark in question appears to have been older than Thomas Clark b. 1755. Mike & I drove out to Garrard Co in July and walked on the site of this land, which had what appears to have been a lucrative salt lick (necessary to produce saltpeter for the Revolutionary War) and a ferry--Saunders Ferry--which would have been the most direct route to Lexington & Fayette County from Stanford. The Samuel Bell I mentioned also owned property in this area. I've had my eye on him as a possible connection to my Wayne Co Bells, but he appears to have come from Virginia and the connection, IF it exists, is elusive. As for William Barnett, if he's yours, I'd like to know as much as possible about him and Mary Bell. There may be much more under the surface here than we realize.
