Hello listers, I am searching for Joseph Bell. The only living proof that I have for this Joe Bell is that he is given as the father of James William Bell, born 7 Feb 1893. This birthdate is listed on James' draft registration.??James said he was born in Parmleysville, Wayne County, Kentucky.? His death certificate, dated 27 Aug 1936, names Joseph Bell as his father.? It also names Carrie Christian as his mother.? Carrie and Joseph may or may not have been married.? I have found no proof of a marriage. Carrie Christian, otherwise known as Salena Caroline Christian Voyles, was born 12 July 1868 in Jamestown, Fentress County, Tennessee, and died 19 Jan 1947 in Saint Louis, Missouri.? She lived for a time in Ellington, Reynolds County, Missouri, where the above mentioned James William Bell died. So, back to Joseph Bell.? To date, I have not located him in a census.? I suspect that he was living in Wayne County in 1900, although I have no proof.? Carrie's family had by then moved to Reynolds County, Missouri. She was not there.?In early 1905,?Carrie did show up in Reynolds County with her three sons James, Wesley, and Riley. She?gave birth to another son, Joseph Bell, and married George Voyles later that year. The Christian family lived in Wayne County between the census years 1880 and 1900. They were not there the entire time, however, because there are marriage records in Reynolds County, Missouri prior to the 1900 census. Probable year of immigration to Missouri is 1892.? Carrie was the daughter of James and Eliza Bruce Christian.? ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone. Something that may help you--There are two (three, if you count Silas Bell as a separate line) different Bell lines in Wayne County. The Bells who lived in the vicinity of Otter Creek came from North Carolina. The Bells who live/d in the vicinity of Parmleysville originated in Virginia and are descended from Joseph Bell & Nancy Davenport. Now, just as surely as I've said this, someone is going to come up with an exception, however the name Joseph does not run in my NC > Otter Creek line, as a rule, and I do have a James William Bell in my direct line. It is likely your Joseph is a direct descendant of Joseph & Nancy Davenport Bell. The 1880 census for Wayne County yields 4 Joseph Bells: Joseph Bell b. 1825 Joseph G. Bell b. 1868 (grandson of Sarah; son of Matilda) Joseph Bell b. 1830 m. Nancy Joseph S. Bell b. 1874 (parents George W. & Nancy) Since your James William Bell was born in 1893, we may assume his father was at least 18 years old when he was born or born before 1875. All four Joseph Bells fit that profile. Joseph b. 1825 and Joseph b. 1830 were 63 years of age and older, so we probably can eliminate them. That leaves Joseph b. 1868 and Joseph S. b. 1874 as two possible candidates. I do not have either of these Joseph Bells in my db, another indication that they belong to the VA line of Bells. My database does have a George W. Bell b. 1857, s/o Hiram b. 1828, s/ o Joseph & Nancy Anderson Bell, s/o Joseph & Nancy Davenport Bell. The 1880 census indicates George W. Bell was 37 years old (b. 1843), however I am not an expert on the Joseph Bell/Nancy Davenport line and it's possible either my information or the census record is wrong. In other words, further research or help from someone familiar with this line might determine whether or not George W. Bell father of Joseph is George W. Bell great grandson of Joseph & Nancy. As for the Joseph Bell b. 1868, this appears to be the family with a mother named Sarah (80 yrs old) and daughter named Matilda (37 yrs old): Thomas BELL, id 7927 b. 1798 at Somerset, Pulaski Co, KY m. 9 FEB 1818 Sarah TROXELL at Wayne Co, KY d. 1844 aged 46 Parents: Joseph BELL (1745 - 1815), Nancy DAVENPORT (1745 - 1815) Children (6): Malinda W. BELL (1831), James BELL (1832), Nancy BELL (1833), Telitha E. BELL (1837), Martha A. BELL (1839), Matilda BELL (1843) I hope this helps a bit.
