In a previous post, I noted that there were two Lair families in Wayne Co., KY, although in the case of my Rev. James it seems the spelling was originally Lear. See my research on my line at http://azstrong.tripod.com/jd_letha/legacy/836.htm. There, I also refer to the line of Bradford Lair and note that I have found no connection between the two lines. I am interested in recruiting a representative of Bradford's line for the recently formed Lear-Lohr-Lair DNA Project, of which I am a co-administrator. Our website is http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/l/lear/. I know there has been much speculation over the years that Bradford was somehow related to Matthias Lehrer/Lair of Rockingham Co., VA, many of whose descendants settled in Lincoln Co., KY. DNA testing now provides a way to test that theory, although that will also require recruiting one of Matthias' descendants for the project. DNA testing will also confirm whether or not our respective Wayne Co. KY families are related. As to my line, I've recruited a descendant of my Rev. James Lear/Lair, a descendant of James' brother, Jesse, and a descendant of the Garrard Co. Lears who moved there from Culpeper Co., VA. I expect to establish through DNA that my line is related to the Culpeper Co., VA Lears, although the paper trail does not foreclose the possibility that my line goes back to Matthias. I hope someone from Bradford's line will take the lead in finding qualified descendants to be tested. That means a male Lair, not a female Lair nor a male descendant through a female Lair, for Y-DNA is what is tested and that is only carried by direct line males. The cost of the preferred 37 marker test is $189. I know of at least one Bradford Lair descendant who has expressed a willingness to contribute to the cost. Robert Strong
