My great grandfather was JOHN PAYTON HORTON, born January 25, 1836 (according to his death certificate) or February 23, 1837 (according to his tombstone) and died March 29, 1924. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Dabney. Census records give his occupation as 'farmer". Though his daughter, my grandmother, says he was a judge (justice of peace?) around the time the courthouse burned in 1888. My grandmother who was 6 years old when the courthouse burned remembers the fire and says they lived next door at the time. Can anyone tell me or direct me where I could find verification that John P. Horton served as a judge or justice of peace in Wayne County, KY around 1888?
