    1. Re: [KYWAYNE] Rock Creek during Civil War.
    2. Hi Anna, These are the only Rock Creek locations I could find in Kentucky, none in Wayne County. These come from the United States Geological Survey see reference below. So many families moved to the area in the late 1850s and 60's that it was called "Little Kentucky." I will keep looking for a Rock Creek in or around Wayne County. No information on Evans Company during the Civil War. Mary

    1. Rock Creek and the Aleck EVANS Company during Civil War.
    2. Anna L Bertram
    3. According to a written family account Martin Luther BERTRAM (1827 - 1865), son of Nancy (STINSON) and William BERTRAM, III, of Wayne Co., KY was killed during the Civil War at Rock Creek. This was not the Rock Creek in far away Grayson Co., KY but one in or near Wayne Co., KY. It could have been in a neighboring county, such as Clinton, Pulaski Whitley, etc. Martin BERTRAM was a civilian, not a soldier. An exact quote of the incident is " Martin was killed during the Civil War. He was knocked in the head with a rock by Bill MILLIGAN of Aleck EVANS Company, at Rock Creek." Does anyone know where this Rock Creek could have been? Does anyone have any information on the Aleck EVANS Company? On which side was Aleck EVANS? Thanks for any help! Sincerely, Anna Bertram [email protected]

    1. cemetery updates
    2. Marilyn Gregory-Fisher
    3. Hello List, We've just finished updating online 22 of the Wayne Co, KY cemeteries. We've now added over 500 new or updated names. These can be found on the New Info Index. We have exciting news for those researching David Bell(1807-1876) and Leann (Bell) Bell (1822-1875). Earlier this year we discovered their marked graves in the George Bell Cemetery. You can view what we found on p.244 of the old cemetery index. For those not familiar with this couple, David is the son of James Bell and Peggy Troxell. If you would like to update a cemetery write to us here: [email protected] Pictures are also welcome. We'll add your info as time permits. 1. 1790 Census for Kentucky online
    2. Marilyn Gregory-Fisher
    3. Hello, The Wayne Co KYGenWeb site is now offering a link to the 1790 Census of Kentucky. Transcribed by Don Rubarts and Suzanne Yelton Shephard, this is the census for the entire state as it existed in 1790. In 1790 Wayne Co. was apart of then Lincoln Co. and McCreary Co. was part of the Indian Lands. The web site includes a map showing how the counties were laid out in 1790 and today. Visit the Wayne County KYGenWeb "Census" link or "What's New" link to connect to Suzanne and Don's work. This is an off-site link, use your "Back" button to return to Wayne Co. 2. Marilyn Gregory-Fisher
    3. Is anyone out there researching the Burk/Burke/Burkes family? I am particularly interested in the family of Eph Burk/Burke who was married to Rhoda Bell and Buna Williams. Eph had two children with 1st wife Rhodie. Their names were Teddy and Elsie. We know Teddy was raised by his grandparents Wm & Nancy Chriswell Bell and that he died as a teenager in 1929. There is an Elsie Burke buried next to him. I would like to know if this is his sister and is it the same Elsie Burke (or Ocie Mae Burke) killed by Clyde Carter in 1934? 1. Smyrna, Shellotte, Travisville, and Rigney Mountain
    2. Anna L Bertram
    3. Thanks to all who answered me about these places on the Tennessee-Kentucky border. I now only lack finding RIGNEY MOUNTAIN, which apparently is near the Bald Rock. The GNIS says the Bald Rock is in a corner of Wayne Co., KY next to Clinton Co., KY and Pickett Co., TN. So, the Rigney Mountain could be in any one of these three counties. This is the old name for it and it may have been renamed. Also there is a cemetery near the Bald Rock where several RIGNEYS are buried. Anyone know the name of this cemetery and directions to it? I have a hunch that if we find the cemetery we'll find Rigney Mountain. Thanks a million! Anna Bertram [email protected]

    1. Smyrna and Shellotte Communities, and RIGNEY Mountain
    2. Anna L Bertram
    3. An interesting story involving Dr. Otto BERTRAM was placed by John PILE in a community book about the history of Pickett Co., TN, page 53. It is as follows. " THE WOMAN PHANTOM AND DR. OTTO BERTRAM ... DR. OTTO BERTRAM ... NOTED PERSONALITY" "Dr. BERTRAM doctored people in the Travisville, Shellotte, Rigney Mountain, and communities that were close or bordered the place where Pickett and Fentress Counties, Tennessee, and Clinton and Wayne Counties, Kentucky, bordered." I found Travisville on a map of Pickett Co., TN. (Used to be in Fentress Co., TN.) Anyone know where the community of Smyrna is in Pickett Co., TN? Anyone know where the community of Shellotte was or is? Anyone know where RIGNEY Mountain was or is? Certainly could use some help! And I would be most appreciative! Sincerely, Anna Bertram [email protected]

    1. Diaries of Rev. George Bell now online.
    2. Marilyn Gregory-Fisher
    3. In January of 1913 George Bell (son of Silas Bell and Mary Ellen Caylor) was ordained a minister of the Baptist faith. Affectionately called "Preacher George" he ministered to members of the Bell Hill Baptist Church for several decades. During these years at Bell Hill Church, Rev. Bell kept personal diaries of happenings within the county. In his ledger books he began recording the deaths of church members, neighbors, friends, and family beginning in 1905, several years before the State of Kentucky required death certificates to be issued. Rev. Bell continued to record deaths in the county until his own death in 1962 when his sister, Liza Bell Bennett took over the practice. Rev. Bell and his wife Ernie (Bertram) are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Sunnybrook, KY. These records kept by Rev. Bell are priceless and we are so fortunate that they survive today. Together with Eileen Mullins (a Bell descendant) we have transcribed two of the books kept by Rev. Bell. We have sorted these records in alphabetical order rather than by date for easy searching. Some of the entries include the person's age at his or her death, maiden names are sometimes included for married women, and occasionally the cause of death is listed. There may be some date discrepancies, but usually within one day. Please note that if a person was accidentally killed or murdered by someone, that person's name was also written down. We feel that this information is important and because these deaths happened over 40 years ago we have chosen to include those names as well. To protect the privacy of the individuals who now own the books, we will not give out their names or forward inquiries. Below is an example of what you will find on our new web page. Books are divided by years 1904-1943 and 1944-1962. (Please note: We have no further information than what is already listed here.) -A- (--?--) Maggie (Mrs.) 9-24-1942 65 yrs Abbott J.S. 3. June and List, Not a problem....."all is understood and all is okay". I've been at Genealogy for a good 20 years and know how these things can sometimes get a little, "topsy-turvy", without anyone ever intending for that to happen. I assume responsibility for having, "jumped the gun", and mis-interpreted what you really meant to say. I'll chalk it up to my own error due to being on overload with stress! We've had so much stress this year beginning with the *California Fires* in October, which forced us to immediately evacuate the new custom home we had just moved into up here at Big Bear Lake, CA.. The fires came within 6 miles from the Dam and it was one very scary experience, almost like something from a science fiction movie.... Later in the year came more stress with my husband injuring his back requiring back surgery. He's A-okay now, and we thank God for that. One month ago came yet more sad news that our oldest Grandson, (age 17), had been diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer, and more specifically.....Hodgkins Cancer. We'll be flying to Germany, (where he lives), in a couple of weeks. Everyone's prayers will be appreciated. With all these stressful situations in our lives, I suppose my perception of your email could have been distorted and so I do apologize, (from the heart), for having mis-read your email message. You have my hand in friendship! Sincerely, Mimi Alexander Big Bear Lake, CA BENBROOK, BROOKS, BURTON, CHAMBERS, CHOICE, CLARK, DICKSON, DICKERSON, DIXON, DUFF, HARRIS, HARVEY, HUFFMAN, HERRINGTON, HOLLAND, JACKSON, JENNINGS, KERBY/KIRBY, MAHAN, MEGUIRE, MOORE, MORGAN, OLIVER, OWEN, OVERTON, STOVALL, STUBBLEFIELD, TARRENT, TICKNER, TULLY, WALKER, WEEKS, WRIGHT. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry Mimi, I awoke this a.m. with flu and had 38 emails with 38 problems. 1. Re: Finding Cemeteries in Wayne County
    2. Jerry, there is no cost to go to that website. If you use the basic "TopoZone", it is free. There is a charge for the "pro" version. But I've been able to find cemeteries using the basic version. Just set the map size to "Large" to help you see a larger map, and if the scale is too big, and you want to see more of the surrounding area (zoomed out), in order to get your bearings, change the "View Scale" from 1:50,000 to 1:100,000. You then press update to make the change. If you really want to zoom in, then you can perhaps choose 1:25,000 or less. You can also search for the names of streams, churches, etc. Sometimes the cemeteries aren't named, but if they are associated with a church, you might find the church name there. At the main website, once you choose a cemetery, church, etc. and select it, you can then choose what type of map you want to see this with. Some will show the feature, some do not. Aerial views don't name them.
