    1. [KYWAYNE] BROWN, Lizzie -- daughter pf Jane Bertram & Elijah Brown of Wayne, & Clinton Co., KY
    2. Anna L Bertram
    3. Just got back from a Bertram reunion in Monticello, Wayne Co., KY. We went one day early so I could look in the Wm. Crenshaw Kennedy Jr. Wayne County Memorial Musem's genealogy library. (I recommend this added venue for Wayne County genealogy researchers.) My main research objective this trip was to look for the spouse of Nancy Elizabeth "Lizzie" BROWN, but I did not find anything. I am hoping someone on the list will know something that will lead me to more information about her. Lizzie Brown was born about December 1872 in southern Wayne Co., KY to Jane (Bertram) & Elijah Brown. I have not found a trace of her after the 1880 Wayne Co., KY census in which she was enumerated as Nancy E., age 8, in the home of her parents, yet I know from previous interviews with old timers that Lizzie married and reared a family. I think she may have relocated to McCreary, Whitley, or Pulaski counties in KY but this is just a hunch. She might just as well have gone with some of her siblings to Texas, or settled in nearby TN. I really have no definite leads. 1880 Wayne Co., KY Census (108th Enumeration District.): #149-151; BROWN, Elijah, 35, husband, farmer, TN, TN, TN; Jane, 33, wife, KY, KY, KY; Feriby E., 10, daughter; Nancy E., 8, dau; George W., 6, son; General M, 4, son, William F., 2, son. (Still next door to Jane's parents.) Her siblings were Ellen (aka Feriby E.) , George Washington, General Marion, William Fount, Prentiss, and Arlena Brown. Ellen Brown married Joe S. Jones. George W. married Martha Ellot Stinson. General Marion married Martha Catherine Martin, and 2nd Catherine Mae Martin. Prentiss died young. Arlena married William "Bill" Shoopman and 2nd Judge Dudley Sloan. If you have any information about Lizzie or any of the members of this family I would very much appreciate hearing from you. I will gladly share any data I have. Sincerely, Anna Bertram

    3. Adding a few more names and facts to the previous post: The wife of Dareth H. "D. H." Neal was Maud E. STEPHENS. Their known children, all born in McCreary County, were: Eula I. Neal, born Feb. 1, 1920 Harold E. Neal, born May 1, 1921 Kathleen Neal, born Nov. 17, 1923 Dannie H. Neal, born March 12, 1931 D. H. and Maud lived at Yamacraw and he was a coal miner. My #1 goal is to find the maiden name of Dareth's mother. I think she may have been a Brown from Wayne Co., Kentucky, but need proof that she was, or was not. My #2 goal is to find living relatives of this family if possible. All replies will be appreciated. Sincerely, Anna Bertram

    3. I wish to prove or disprove that Nancy Elizabeth "Lizzie" Brown married Thomas G. Neal (or married someone else). Please contact me if you have any information to share. Lizzie was my husband's great aunt and we wish to make contact with her descendants. Lizzie Brown was born about Dec. 1872 in Wayne Co., KY to Jane Bertram & Elijah Brown. We know she lived to adulthood, married and had children, but no one in the family seems to remember the name of her husband. It looks like she may have married Thomas G. Neal based on census records, but I need proof one way or the other. The census records follow: 1880 Wayne Co., Kentucky Census (108th Enumeration District.): #149-151; BROWN, Elijah, 35, husband, farmer, TN, TN, TN; Jane, 33, wife, KY, KY, KY; Feriby E., 10, daughter; Nancy E., 8, dau; George W., 6, son; General M, 4, son, William F., 2, son. (Next door to Jane's parents.) I found a Lizzie NEAL on the 1900 Whitley Co., KY Census that I believe was Lizzie BROWN although the year of birth and place of birth don't entirely agree with what we know. The key factor is there is a niece in the household by the name of Della JONES, who may have been the daughter of Lizzie's sister, Ellen (BROWN) JONES (aka Mrs. Joe S. Jones of the Cumberland River Region also.) 1900 Whitley Co., Kentucky Census; East Pine Knot Precinct; S.D. 102; E.D. 133; Sheet 26-B; Page 13-B; June 11th; Line 60; Household #183: NEAL, Thomas G., head, white, male, born 1863, age 37, married 6 years; KY KY KY; Lizzie, wife, white, female, born Dec. 1873, age 28, married 6 years, 3 children born - 2 children still living, TN TN KY; Dareth H., son, Nov. 1894, age 5, KY KY TN; Rubie H., daughter, Oct. 1899, 7/12, KY KY TN; JONES, Della, niece, white, female, July 1888, 11, KY KY TN 1910 Pulaski Co., Kentucky; Magisterial District 3; Clifty Precinct, S.D. 11; E.D. 194; Sheet 5-B; Page 28-B; Roll 51; Book 1; April 29th; Line 90; Household and Visit #101-103: NEAL, T.G., head, male, white, age 48, married 1 time - married 16 years, born in KY, father born in VA, mother born in KY, farmer; Lizzie, wife, female, white, age 38, married 1 time - married 16 years, 6 children born - 5 children still living, TN TN KY; D.H., son, male, white, age 15, KY KY KY; Rubie, daughter, female, white, age 9, KY KY KY; John, son, age 7 (born about 1903), KY KY KY; Elsie, daughter, female, white, age 5, KY KY KY; Myrtle, daughter, female, white, age 1 1/12, KY KY KY I grew exhausted searching for this couple or their children in Kentucky or Tennessee in 1920, but believe I found one of ther sons in McCreary Co., KY on the 1920 Census. See below . . . 1920 McCreary Co., Kentucky Census; Yamacraw Precinct 17; S.D. 11; E.D. 171; Sheet ?; Devel Creek Road; Feb. 14th; Line 52; Household and Visitation #13-13: NEAL, D.H., head, age 25, married, KY KY TN, miner - coal mines; Maud, wife, age 17, married, KY KY KY; Grace, daughter, female, white, age 10 months, KY KY KY Another researcher once mentioned they thought Lizzie married a James LAWSON. (Also unproved!) Note: There was a Thomas NEAL and wife, Elizabeth, about the right ages to have been this couple on the 1920 Oldham Co., Kentucky Census but they do not appear to be the same ones. For one thing they are shown with a 23 year old son named William and that does not match the information we have on Thomas G. NEAL and wife, Lizzie. Thanks for your time and consideration! Anna Bertram

    1. [KYWAYNE] BROWN, MATTHEWS, MALONE, HOOVER, BOWLES, DICKEN
    2. Anna L Bertram
    3. Do you love a puzzle? Here is a good one . . . I'm currently working on the family of Daniel Matthews (Mathews, Mathis) and Nancy ________, his wife. They were on the 1840 and 1850 Wayne Co., KY Census, and on the 1860 Clinton Co., Kentucky Census. Some of their children were in various households in Clinton Co., KY in 1870. They were frequently living near the Dicken family, so there could be a familial connection between the Matthews and Dicken families. My main interest is because I believe their daughter, Angeline Matthews, is the one who married William Malone. A user submitted World Family Tree on Ancestry.com shows her as Angeline Brown, daughter of Eli and Sarah Brown. I believe this is incorrect. I am working on proof. If anyone is interested in this family or has additional information I would love to hear from you. I have lost touch with Michelle Bowles who was also working on this about 5 years ago. Also, puzzle #2 . . . the Clinton Co., KY cemetery book by Gary Norris lists Mary W. Malone Hoover and her husband, James M. Hoover, in the Shelton Cemetery in Clinton Co., Kentucky. The death dates listed are 24 Jan 1941 for Mary and 12 Apr 1943 for James. I have not been able to locate either one on the Social Security Death Index or the Kentucky Death Index. They may have died in another state but I don't have any clues. Mary W. Malone was the grandaughter of Daniel and Nancy ____ Matthews, and the daughter of the one I believe was Angeline Matthews. Again, I will welcome hearing from anyone with an interest or additional information on this family. Descendants of Daniel Matthews Generation No. 1 1. 2. Thank you so much for checking the books for me. I really appreciate it - I will take your advise and try looking in Pulaski County. I had not thought of checking there. I am not very familiar with distances in your state. Hopefully that will be fruitful. Thank you again, I really appreciate it. Alberta Jacobsen **************Need a new ride? 2. Anna L Bertram
    3. Gary, I checked the book, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, by Irene Atwood Byrer. It has a listing of those buried in the cemetery up to about 1975. There is no marked grave for Henry or Martha Tuggle at Pleasant Hill (Sunnybrook, Wayne County, Kentucky). Sorry! Some time back you sent me the following information: Possible date of death per Gary Tuggle: . . . " "he "finished his course" July 4th, 1856, there at Pleasant Point" " (Pleasant Point is in Pulaski Co., Kentucky.) Have you checked cemeteries in Pulaski County? Is there one there at Pleasant Point? Good luck! Anna Bertram ----- Original Message ----- From: Gary Tuggle Is there a listing of all the folks buried in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.....? I am still unable to locate the burial location of Henry Tuggle married to Martha Brammer (both around 1856) which lived most of their lives in Wayne County.

Walter Buttrum of Sparta will arrange to have the gate unlocked so we can drive our trucks and SUVs into the field near the cemetery. Fount and I will try to be there both days by 9:30 AM from our home near Woodbury in Cannon County. > > We appreciate everyone who has helped in the past with "sweat equity", financial contributions, and best wishes. Attendance at the workdays is dwindling. Several interested persons are getting older or are no longer with us. In order to preserve this wonderful historical cemetery for our children, grandchildren, and their children, we need to get them involved in helping us take care of it too. > > For those new to this cemetery I will give a brief history. In 1838 landowner Richard Bradley established the cemetery when he buried his first wife, Minty Bradley. Other Bradley family members are buried here also in unusual "tent" or "comb graves" with sandstone markers that mostly resemble arrowheads. (Richard Bradley's grave has rounded markers instead on his tent grave, and no one seems to know why.) I have been told that the graves marked only with fieldstones that are directly behind the Richard Bradley family are those of their slaves. One beloved little boy, designated only as Black Boy Crockett, is buried next to his mistress, Sally Goodbread Bradley, as she requested. Fieldstones in front of the family are those of members of the community. Also in this cemetery is the grave of William Butram (II), a soldier of the American Revolution. > > William Butram was born July 15,1759 in Rowan Co., North Carolina. As a young man he fought in the American Revolution against the British, on the side of the Patriots. After the war he returned to his wife (Sarah Patterson) and children in Rowan County, but after their home burned they relocated to Iredell County, North Carolina. Later he moved to Lee County, Virginia for a short while, then on to Wayne County, Kentucky, where some of his children had already migrated. He was quite elderly when he moved for the last time to White County, Tennessee. We don't know exactly why he is buried in the Bradley Cemetery other than friendship with Richard Bradley who performed the marriages of some of William's grandchildren in White County. My husband is a third great-grandson of William Butram. > > In the early 1960s the Cookeville Chapter of the D.A.R. had a U.S. Military Service marker placed on William Butram's grave. The original marker has since been lost. The marker the DAR placed gives an incorrect year of death for William Butram because at the time they ordered it the grave had not yet been located by descendant Marshall Bertram, an Associate Professor of History at TN Tech. It is our plan to place a footstone on the grave with the correct date of death -- November 10, 1853. > > While William Butram lived in Wayne Co., Kentucky he was a neighbor to Henry Marsh, another Revolutionary War soldier. Henry and his family moved to White County, Tennessee a short time before William Butram and his daughter, Katy, moved there also. Again the two old soldiers were neighbors. It is known that Henry Marsh was buried somewhere in or near the Bradley Cemetery so it is only fitting that his descendants erected a US Military Marker for him a few years ago, next to his friend, William Butram. > > A lot more history and many colorful stories are shared at all these workday gatherings. They are a pilgrimage to honor our ancestors but they are an investment in the future. We work but we have fun and leave feeling proud of what we have accomplished. If you live near enough to attend and are physically able, please join us. Bring yard tools, including small push mowers, if you have them. Wear work gloves, sturdy clothes and boots. Bring your drinking water and snacks. > > Fount and I will go to eat afterwards, dirt and all. at Yanni's Restaurant off Brockman Way in Sparta. Everyone is welcome to join us. > > Please contact us if you have questions or need directions to the cemetery. We are hoping for a big turnout on both dates!
