Donna, I hope we can help each other. I did look for the parents of Marion Shelton of Wayne Co., KY. I believe his full name was Francis Marion Shelton as many boys were named in honor of Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox", a famous soldier in the Revolutionary War. If so, I found him on census with a grown man and woman who appear to have been his parents. 1870 Wayne Co., Kentucky; Slickford - Magisterial District #3; Post Office Monticello; Stamped Page 53-A; June 13th; Line 30; Household and Visit #5-5: SHELTON, John, age 44 (born about 1826) , male, white, farmer, born in KY; Elisabeth, age 27, female, white, keeps house, born in South Carolina; Henry E., age 14, farm laborer, born in KY; Francis M., age 12, male white, laborer, born in KY; Celina S., age 10, female, white, at home, KY; Sarah L. or S., age 8, KY; Mary J., age 4, KY; Lunda A., age 2, female, white, KY 1880 Wayne Co., Kentucky Census; Magisterial District 3; SD 3; ED 108; Written pages 37-A & 38-B; Stamped Pages 541-A & 542-B; Line 49; Household and Visit #335-340: SHELTON, John, white, male, age 50, husband, married, farmer, born in KY, father born in North Carolina, mother born in KY; Elisebeth, white, female, age 39, wife, married, keeps house, born in South Carolina, both parents born in South Carolina; (next page) SHELTON, Jesse, white, male, age 20, son, house help, KY KY SC; Elitha, white, female, daughter, KY KY SC; Polly J., age 15, daughter, KY KY SC; Malinda E., age 14, daughter, at home, KY KY SC; Martha E., age 14, daughter, at home, KY KY SC; Margret, age 4, daughter, at home, KY KY SC; Layton, age 3, son, at home, KY KY SC (Note; Where was Martha E. I have a Rachel Upchurch, who had a number of children by a James Matthew, do you think they might be the same family? I have nothing on the names you mention, and all of her children went by the Upchurch name. Wilma **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? I'm new to the listserve. Do I post my message to you? I am looking for info on ancestors and siblings for Marion Shelton who is listed in the 1880 census (Wayne County) as a 23 yr. old farmer, place of birth unknown, and his wife, Martha. Marion married Martha Jane Mathew, who was born in Monticello (Wayne County). They had children who include Myrtle (my g.grandmother), Willie, and Mattie (may be more). Marion, Martha, their kids, and Dolly Mikel (maybe others) migrated to St. Louis, Mo., about 1896 in a covered wagon, according to Myrtle as told me to when I was a child. Dolly Mikel (nee Mathew) was Martha Jane's sister. Additional info that I have is that Martha Jane Matthew's & Dolly Mike's parents were James Mathew & Mollie (or Millie?) Mathew (nee Upchurch). Both James Mathew & Mollie (or Millie) Upchurch were born in Monticello. Does this ring a bell with anyone?
Here is my e-mail address. Am I able to post questions now? Thanks, Donna
Thank you very much. No one else has made your kind offer. I am looking for death, will or probate records on Jesse Burris who died in Wayne county between 1860 and 1870. HIs last know place of residence was in Mill Springs, Wayne county in the 1860 census. His widow's first name was Matilda. I have presumed children: Philip E.; Levi; William; Jesse L.; Jasper Daniel and possibly Mary (Polly or Pauline) but need documentation to prove the connection to some of them. Thank you so much. Hi Carolyn, Well, I have had a snag since I first posted this. I have been contacted by another Johnson researcher (a descendant of James Johnson) and he tells me that Washington Johnson, who married Nancy Thompson is NOT the son of James Johnson and wife, Rebecca. What are your thoughts about this? Washington Johnson is not my ancestor, I just connect to him (or thought I did) through my Johnson lineage. I would be very interested in your opinion. I seem to be digging a bigger hole for my genealogical research!! Thanks, and I look forward from hearing from you. Check out the following Cemetery site. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kywaycem/index.html I checked my copy of the book and the only James was born in 1829 and died in 1908. No Rebecca. I also did not find either of them in the 1850 Wayne Census book I have. (George) Washington Johnson is not the son of James Johnson and Rebecca Farris, a fact proven by DNA testing. Copy of email to Harold Johnson and his response: Harold, I noticed that the pedigree of 42296 (James Granville Johnson) has as its first known ancestor, James Johnson (and his wife, Rebecca Farris). I have seen this a few times before and have mentioned to a few people that Washington Johnson was not a son of James and Rebecca Johnson. The family of James and Rebecca has been a known quantity for a great number of years thanks to the family researchers of the early and middle 20th century who actually lived in the research area (Wayne, Pulaski and Russell Counties in Kentucky). I have been ignored by those few individuals who continue to maintain the relationship between James and Washington but I am not adamant about changing their minds. They are free to believe whatever they like. But, my DNA test results are completely different than the "James Granville Johnson" tests and, in fact, I am completely isolated, genealogically speaking, from everyone else. Anyone viewing the two pedigrees and the test results are surely going to be puzzled. But, I don't want to create problems for anyone. I simply thought I should point out the differences. I see no point in taking the next DNA test stage until, if and when someone joins who has a better chance of matching me. I am certainly open to any suggestions you might have to offer. Hi Ron, Ah, you are observant!!!! One of the things that became obvious very early in our project was that too many people relied on existing posted lineages for their own sources. If it looked like it would fit, they used it! Some of our participants have made adjustments...others have ignored the obvious. And frankly, there's not much that can be done about what these people do. Hopefully, DNA research will become recognized as the "truth" that it is and when used in conjunction with a solid conventional research a "standard" will be generally accepted. For your own information, ISOGG has a committee working on a protocol for using DNA test results in establishing lineages. This protocol is in request to DAR, The Mayflower Society and others seeking a standard for their lineages requirements. I expect that the committee will be reporting their suggestions in a month or so. I'll certainly send out a group newsletter reporting their findings.
