Jo, Lodema Thomas Riley was given her father's first (given) name as her middle name. Her father Thomas Riley was killed a few months before she was born. Her mother, Millie Ann Smith, died when Lodema was just under two years old, so she was raised by Millie Ann's parents, Isaac Denton and Zerelda Ann (Smith) Smith. R. S. Marcum, constable, brought here yesterday, John J. SMITH and his son Jacob SMITH, who shot and killed Diance BLEVINS on Christmas day, the SMITHS also shot and wounded James and Charles BLEVINS at the same time. The SMITHS have been under guard since their arrest, awaiting trial. James MILLER, who was with the SMITHS at the time of the killing of BLEVINS, had a preliminary trial last week and is now in jail at this place. (Huntsville, TN) The Gazette, (Jamestown, TN) January 14, 1904; page 3. (From Our Exchanges) I would think these men were tried in Scott Co., TN or at least taken before the Grand Jury. Marilyn, you may want to check Old English law on this because our law was based on it. In some old court records I have read in our early colonial days infant referred to any child under 14. I don't if this applies to your question or not, but you may find the answer under the Old English law.
