    1. Geneaology problem?
    2. Mimi Alexander
    3. Hello Wayne County, I'm a new List member interested in researching my Kentucky ancestors, some who were known to have lived in Wayne County in the 1800's. Being "new", means sitting back and observing other members posts and getting a feel of the friendliness.....or NOT. A few days ago, there were a couple of posts regarding 2 of my ancestral surnames, WRIGHT and DICKERSON. The post was sent by [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> whom I do not know, a total stranger to me. Being very excited about the possibility of a new ancestral discovery, I emailed this person in a polite, friendly manner asking them if they connected to these two lines and if so, would they please contact me privately so we could talk further. This morning, I received a rude reply back from them asking me, "what's my problem".......!!!!! It now appears to me, (a new Wayne Co. List Member), that my genealogical inquiries are not welcome and therefore I will now unsubscribe from the KYWAYNE! -List. It was my understanding that the purpose of sending genealogical posts to the List was to further discovery of one's ancestral roots, and not to be so rudely asked, "WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM?" As of this moment, I no longer wish to continue my, "new" List membership! Consider me as a, "new", unsubscribed member! Mimi Alexander [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>

I was advised by a Cumberland County researcher to post here as apparently there are a lot of Roberts in Wayne county so taking a shot that there might be a link.. :) Well on Matlock Roberts we've finally found the parents and 4 brothers names. Please check your records and if you think we have a match let me know, below you will find first 3 generations from William down. 3. What, if any, is the subscription cost? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, August 25, 2004 11:21 PM Subject: [KYWAYNE] Finding Cemeteries in Wayne County | Here is a great website to show on a map where quite a few cemeteries in | Wayne County are (or for other states and counties). Once you get to the webpage, | under "State or Territory", choose "Kentucky". Then type in "Wayne" for | "County Name". Use the drop down list under "Feature Type" to choose "cemetery". | Then hit the "Send Query" button and the Wayne County Cemeteries will be | listed. There's various ways to look at them. Just click on the cemetery you are | interested in. If you then choose the "Topo Zone" selection, it will show | the location of the cemetery on a topographic map. Make sure you change the map | size to "Large". You can look at the various other map types there to see | which best meets your needs. The aerial photography one is interesting, but I | find that it is hard to use, and you really have to know the roads and | buildings to know what you are looking at, and then move around. | | Anyway, for those of you who are looking for cemeteries this is a great | resource. | | Here is the website for that link: | http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form | | Have fun hunting!! 2. June & Stephen Bork
    3. I forgot to mention the reason for posting the Moses Wright sketch. Moses was only married twice. The tax records proved there were two men named Moses Wright. One was Sr. and the other Jr. It was Jr. who married Mahala Dean. I have not researched the Wrights beyond what is in Vol 6 of Wayne Co, KY Wills. June

    1. Moses Wright Sr.
    2. June & Stephen Bork
    3. A brief sketch of Moses Wright Sr. MOSES WRIGHT was born 22 October 1788 in Lincoln County, Kentucky and died 17 September 1871 and was buried in the Wright Hollow Cemetery about 5 miles from Monticello. In 1990, Moses Wright’s gravestone was under dirt. He was the son of Jesse Wright and Dorothy "Dosha" Peyton and the grandson of Isaac Wright of Amherst County, Virginia. Moses married twice, first on 04 March 1814 by Elliott Jones, a Justice of the Peace in Wayne County, Kentucky to NANCY DICKERSON, daughter of William. The Bondsman was Urlin East. Nancy was born 1794 in Orange County, Virginia and died about 1835 in Wayne, soon after her son Jesse was born. Moses married second on 03 July 1836 by Roger Oatts, Justice of the Peace to SARAH NICHOLAS in 1836. Sally was born 1803 in Kentucky and died 4 December 1888 in Clio, Wayne County, Iowa where she had settled with her son, Simeon shortly after Moses died. She applied there for Widow's Pension, towards his service in the War of 1812. In 1850 Van Buren County, Iowa, other Wrights were listed in census: Alexander, Ansell, Evender, Jesse, John, two Mary’s and a William Wright. Sarah Nicholas’ mother was Rachel, daughter of William and Sarah Cooper. Rachel was born 1768 in that part of North Carolina that became Tennessee and was living with Moses and Sally in the 1850 census. Rachel died 11 December 1855 at age 90 years. In 1820, Moses and Nancy had one daughter, two sons, and two of her sisters living with them. Moses became their Guardian after Nancy's father died. By 1830, a daughter and son, born between 1810 and 1820 had left and an additional 4 sons and 2 daughters were born between 1820 and 1830, with a total of 6 males and 3 females. The children of Moses Wright and 1/Nancy Dickerson were all born in Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky: 1) GEORGE WASHINGTON WRIGHT was born 04 May 1816 in Monticello; married 1841 to Phidella Edgemond. They left Kentucky early and went to Missouri before 1845 and were in Iowa by 1850 in Van Buren County. In 1870, George and Phide1la were living in Wayne County, Jefferson Twp., both age 53, born Ky, with a son John W. and his wife and 2 of their children living in the house. George's death record states he died 4 July 1882 (cemetery record says 1881) at age 67 years, 2 months at 5 p.m. He lived in state for 30 years and died in Clio of consumption. Duration of illness, 16 years. Buried in Woodmansee grave yard. Report dated 30 July l881. 2) MOSES WRIGHT JR., born about 1818 in Monticello. Was shown for the first time on the tax list in 1840, age 21. Married 09 Dec 1834 in Wayne Co by Charles L. Higginbotham to MAHALA DEAN. Bondsman, William Dean. Mahala was born about 1817 in Wayne County, Ky; death date and place unknown. Apparently Moses Jr., and Mahala did not get along too well as the tax records of Wayne Co show in 1845, Lower District (one year only) that Mahala Wright was head of house with 2 horses. Moses Wright Jr., was next name listed with 70 acres valued at $100; 1 horse at $30; 2 children age over 5 yrs (b. 1834 to 1840). Moses Wright SR., and other Wrights were living in the Upper District. On 08 May 1850, Mrs. Mahala Wright married STEPHEN ALLEY by S. Popplewell, J.P. Bondsman, John Anderson. The 1850 Census of Wayne gives the names of these two sons living in house of Stephen Alley and Mahala: “William C., age 14 (1836) and James K. 10 (Dec1839). In 1860, Mrs. Mahala Alley was listed as “Mahala Wright” and 1870 Russell Co, KY shows she had given up the Wright and Allen names and reverted back to “Mahala Dean.” Her children were raised as “Deans,” which does not positively mean they were illegitimate. 3) DANIEL PEYTON WRIGHT, born 16 Oct 1819 in Wayne Co., KY, name-sake of Daniel Peyton, son of Philip Peyton; died 1905 and was buried in Albany Cemetery in Clinton Co, KY; married 1/ Malinda ___, who died 1850-2. Malinda and her children are buried in Moses Wright Cemetery in Wayne; Daniel married 2/ ELIZA DICK, daughter of John Dick. After Daniel died, his widow Eliza Dick Wright joined her sons, John and Daniel Jr., in Plainview, TX where Daniel Jr. died in 1943. Other children settled in Oklahoma. Daniel Sr., named his first son "Moses Ellis Wright.” (A letter from Robert Daniel Wright of Wichita, Kansas in 1991 said Moses Ellis, Ellis Valentine and G.W. Wright are not buried with their father, rather, their mother Malinda, the 1st wife of Daniel Peyton Wright. He found Malinda’s grave buried under dirt). 4) ARTAMETHA WRIGHT, born 15 Feb 1822 in Monticello; married John RUTHERFORD/Retherford. 5) SUSANNAH “Susan” WRIGHT, born 20 Dec 1823. Susannah’s name is on a stone in the Moses Wright Graveyard with no death date. It is possible she was never buried there. Susan was named after her Great Grandmother, Susannah, wife of Isaac Wright. 6) JOHN ENOCH WRIGHT, born 25 Dec 1825 in Wayne Co., KY 7) ELIZABETH WRIGHT, born 24 Dec 1827 in Wayne Co., KY 8) son ____ WRIGHT, born about 1828/9. 9) VALENTINE WRIGHT, born 15 Feb 1830 in Wayne Co., KY; and died unmarried 19 Dec 1870 and is buried with his father in Wayne. In 1870, he is living as a farm laborer 'with the Nancy Hall family, his step-sister who was widowed. 10) EMMALINE WRIGHT, born 22 May 1833 in Wayne Co., KY; married GEORGE WASHINGTON DICK. 11) JESSE WRIGHT b: 16 Jul 1834 on Fall Creek, Wayne Co., KY; died 3 Sept 1879 in Clio, Wayne Co., Iowa. Jesse married 1855 in Wayne to Rhoda Jane McGahan, born 1835 in Wayne. Jesse was a witness to his step-mother's Pension Application in Clio where he signed his name in 1879: The children of Moses Wright and wife Sarah Nicholas: 11) MARY E. WRIGHT, born 1837; at home in 1870. 12) FRANCES "Frankey" Wright, born 11 Jan 1839 in Wayne Co., KY; married 1856 to Oliver Perry Duncan. 13) NANCY WRIGHT, born 1 Jan 1841 in Wayne Co., KY; married 1858 to John William Hall who was missing or deceased by 1870, when Nancy is shown as head of house with her step-brother, Valentine Wright helping her on the farm, and 4 children: John M., Harriet, Sallie and Mary. 14) SIMEON P. (Peyton?) WRIGHT, born 1842 in Wayne. He moved to Iowa with his mother shortly after his father died. He was the administrator of his fathers estate. 15) ELVIRA WRIGHT, born 02 Sep 1843 in Wayne; married JOHN PIERCE (1836-1912) . 16) THEODOCIA WRIGHT, born 1846; was called "Dosha" after her Grandmother Dosha Peyton Wright. Dosha was living at home in 1860 and missing by 1870. The Moses Wright Family Graveyard is located on the northeast side of Wright Hollow Branch in Wayne County, Kentucky. The Spann Cemetery is located on road 1808, southeast of Steubenville to Wright Hollow Branch; then southeast following branch .05 miles. Wright, A. C. 11-10-1849 to 02- -1850 Wright, G. 3. Hi, My name is Bonnie Martin and I am researching the family of Moses Wright Jr. & Mahala Dean. I am Mahala's GGgranddaughter. I would be glad to share information if you are also researching this family. At 12:29 PM 8/26/2004, you wrote: >I forgot to mention the reason for posting the Moses Wright >sketch. 1. Finding Cemeteries in Wayne County
    2. Here is a great website to show on a map where quite a few cemeteries in Wayne County are (or for other states and counties). Once you get to the webpage, under "State or Territory", choose "Kentucky". Then type in "Wayne" for "County Name". Use the drop down list under "Feature Type" to choose "cemetery". Then hit the "Send Query" button and the Wayne County Cemeteries will be listed. There's various ways to look at them. Just click on the cemetery you are interested in. If you then choose the "Topo Zone" selection, it will show the location of the cemetery on a topographic map. Make sure you change the map size to "Large". You can look at the various other map types there to see which best meets your needs. The aerial photography one is interesting, but I find that it is hard to use, and you really have to know the roads and buildings to know what you are looking at, and then move around. Anyway, for those of you who are looking for cemeteries this is a great resource. Here is the website for that link: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form Have fun hunting!! 2. Marilyn Gregory-Fisher
    3. Hello, I've just added a new page to my Gregory family web site listing Gregory men who fought in the Civil War and who are listed in Kentucky regiments. http://www.geocities.com/hoosierma/gregoryincivilwar.html I'm going to add pictures and pension information for my two direct ancestors, Claiborn and Sidney Gregory. If anyone has pictures (of person or headstone), military or pension info for any of the others I will be happy to add it as well. I'll be sending this message out to the Gregory mailing list, so I hope to learn more info about these other Gregorys who lived in KY in the the early to middle 1860's. COMING SOON to the Wayne County KYGenWeb site! Wayne Co Deaths recorded by Rev. George E. Bell of the Bell Hill Church. Affectionately called "Preacher George", he began recording deaths in the community in 1905, six years before KY required death certificates to by filed. I've never found a death certificate for my great-grandfather Will Gregory, but found his death recorded in Rev. Bell's diaries as Oct 2, 1927. A transcription of these books (by Eileen Mullins and myself) will be on-line soon! ===== Marilyn Gregory Fisher, CC Wayne Co, KYGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~kywayne/wayne.html Wayne Co, KY Cemetery Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~kywaycem/index.html Gregorys of Wayne Co, KY http://www.geocities.com/hoosierma/ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
