In memory of my great grandfather, Chad Wick Gott, I’d like to post a poem he wrote about his Kentucky Home. Chad was born in Warren County, KY 19th July 1875. His parents, John James Gott and Melissa Elizabeth “Lysse” Lothridge Gott, and their children moved to Crosby County, TX about 1890. Chad died in 1958 in Texas. Although Chad was not an educated man, I feel he showed his feelings very well in his poems. He left us several poems that I’m proud of. He may not have been exceptionally good at it, but his feelings were there. He was also a gifted musician that wrote songs and played the fiddle. I’d also like to dedicate this to “us” descendants that are so proud to have ancestors that “came” from Kentucky. MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME written by Chad W. Gott Ralls, TX I’m a native of Kentucky, And I feel both proud and lucky; When I think just what my heritage will be, When I think of my creation, My old home and my relation; In the Hills down near the line of Tennessee. Chorus Oh, that home of mine, That, childhood home of mine; We were seeking then a better place to know, then a move was contemplated, And the family separated; Yes the circle it was broken years ago. Could I live those old days over, Mid the bluegrass and the clover; Could I be a child again at Mother’s knee. If I only had the power, Just to be a child one hour; It would put an end to all my misery. On the bank of Barren River, Where we often played together; Brother Jack and I were always side by side, While we there in glee were playing, I can hear him, he was saying; In the old dugout canoe we’ll take a ride.
