Joy, My name is Janis Holloway. I was born Janis Carole Tilley to Kathy Ward and Donald Tilley. I grew up in Beford and now live in Cincinnati, OH. Last year I did an enormous amount of research on my maternal grandfather, Gerald Thomas Ward. He was born in Milton on August 19, 1917 to Lawrence Allen and Ida Fisher Ward. and married my grandmother, Oma Harrison Miles on March 7, 1942. He served in the Army, 6th Infantry Division, 63rd Infantry, Company H. He was a Private First Class. He earned several awards and medals which I had replaced for my Mother since he had not kept them. They are listed below. He served in his division in New Guinea and Luzon, Philippines from June, 1941 until his discharge in November of 1945. He died of cancer in the Veterans Admin. Hosp. in Louisville on July 11, 1965 and is buried at Bedford IOOF Cemetery. His grave does not have a military marker, and I don't know why it doesn't. He received the following awards: W.W.II Victory Medal American Defense Ribbon American Theater Ribbon Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star Good Conduct Ribbon Combat Infantryman Badge Driver and Mechanic Badge The Combat Infantryman Badge was later converted to a Bronze Star Medal.
